### "Preferred IDE for seasoned PHP developers"

January 8, 2026

4.0

I've been using PhpStorm for over 10 years and it has always been, and remains to this day, my preferred IDE.

Pros

PhpStorm is a feature-full IDE designed with PHP developers in mind. On top of standard code editing, testing, and debugging features, it brings all the best that JetBrains has to offer from its suite of products. It's easy to use, and intuitive, with a small learning curve, and it's capable of handling multiple languages that are critical to building modern web apps.

Cons

There really isn't much to complain about with PhpStorm. On the odd occasion, you may run into memory usage issues. This product is a beast, and does require a fairly robust machine to run efficiently.

### "Solid IDE with regular updates"

March 25, 2026

5.0

Overall PhpStorm is my favourite development IDE and I use it more than just PHP including Twig, VueJS and more.

Pros

I like using PhpStorm as, not only is it great for PHP development with Symfony and Twig but also for JavaScript. I personally use it for VueJS. This is due to the plugins you can install. It fully integrates with Github and Github Copilot, has great code searching facilities. The learning curve is minimal and overall it straightword to use.

Cons

There are times when PhpStorm will occasionally freeze. This seems to happen on my Mac environment. I'm not sure how it performs on other environments.

### "All-in-One for PHP, But not lightweight"

October 3, 2025

4.0

I’ve been using PhpStorm for about a year for CodeIgniter and Laravel projects. While it sometimes feels heavy compared to other editors, the advanced debugging, code navigation, and refactoring tools save me a lot of time. Overall, PhpStorm is a professional IDE that is worth it for serious PHP development.

Pros

PhpStorm automatically suggests code, detects errors early, and helps with syntax highlighting.Works really well with Laravel and CodeIgniter.

Cons

It’s a subscription-based paid IDE, which may be expensive compared to free editors like VS Code.Beginners might find too many features confusing at first.

Switched from

[Sublime Text](https://www.capterra.com/p/179535/Sublime-Text/)

PhpStorm is a full IDE with many built-in tools (debugger, database tools, version control, etc.). This richness makes it use more RAM, CPU, and disk I/O, especially when opening large projects. Sublime Text is much lighter to run.

### "PhpStorm - the solution you never knew you needed"

September 2, 2025

5.0

I have been a daily user for 4 years now, and have convinced colleagues to try it. All who have tried it, switched to it, or to Webstorm.

Pros

It is really a complete solution for building websites and applications with PHP. The ease of installation and use is staggering. There is a plethora of good plugins from assistance with other languages to debugging. The learning curve is almost nonexistent and the code editing is a dream.

Cons

No real cons on normal usage. When refactoring folders in a large codebase it would be helpful if the app would differentiate more between usage of same.

### "Great PHP IDE"

March 28, 2022

5.0

I use PhpStorm as my primary IDE for all my PHP related freelance projects. I use it with Laravel and Wordpress projects and am able to customize it for both types of projects quickly and easily.

Pros

Clean, simple, customizable, and easy to use. It is loaded with features and has a vast array of plugins to extend functionality beyond what’s available “out-of-the-box”.

Cons

Sometimes the indexing slows down my computer and if a project is not set up properly, it will consistently re-index after changes are made.

### "Absolutely Wonderful Solution for PHP Development"

December 12, 2019

5.0

As a PHP Developer I thank JetBrains for this wonderful product because It is a complete PHP IDE where I can develop, deploy, debug and even remotely debug. Great overall experience

Pros

\- A complete PHP development IDE with all the modern features an IDE must possess like Version control, Database access, Debugging are so good to have feature for PHP Development environment - Built with powerful features of IntelliSense which makes PHP Coding really great as well - Support for a number of themes and add-ons is great so developer can customize according to their own needs - SSH and terminal support is out of the box you don't need to switch to other terminal apps during your development like for using git commands in terminal or accessing SSH. - Support for saving files as templates is just awesome. Plus its coding suggestions to improve as per chosen coding standards and templates is great. - A large number of built-in keyboard shortcuts plus feature of adding custom short cuts is great - It has add-ons to support different PHP Frameworks. Which is great - Being a PHP Developer myself there are so many things to appreciate PHPStorm that I can even write a book about it

Cons

\- With a lot of good features there are some issues as well like it gets a bit slow while loading huge projects. That's because it indexes all files for faster search but sometimes if system is low on memory that can be very painful because it can get really slower - Some configurations like debugging configurations can be a bit more difficult for new users sometimes they might need to go through a lot of research to set up development environment with all features - It is not free or a bit expensive as compared to some other options available

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing PhpStorm

That's because of its full features

### "Expensive but worth it."

May 10, 2022

5.0

Pros

PHPStorm integrates easily into your current work environment. Despite being a private development IDE, it has many tools and plugins that make it easy for the user to transition from their previous IDE to this one. It analyzes all your code in search of errors and teaches you how to optimize it, allowing the user to have a more efficient and clean code.

Cons

To be a fairly powerful IDE, it consumes a lot of computer resources, which is why it is necessary to use a computer with good RAM and processing capacity if we want PHPStorm to work smoothly in it. In addition, its high cost makes it not accessible to any user, but in my opinion I consider it to be a cost worth paying.

### "PHPStorm - my go to IDE for several years"

October 2, 2025

5.0

Very happy, or I wouldn't keep renewing every year. They keep the system up to date with the latest versions of PHP and most of the time if Im watching youtube videos, the person is more than likely using PHP Storm so it seems to be popular with people other than me

Pros

I've been using it for years. I tried VS Code and I tried a multitude of other IDEs over the years but PHP Storm seemed to just gel with me. I love the debugging tools, the remote file view, the ability to edit a remote file, and linking to github to name but a few

Cons

It can be heavy on memory. I guess for what it's doing it may not be but I quite often have 3 or 4 projects open at the same time and you really notice your memory disappearing. They do regular updates but when it has to rebuild the indexes after a new version or for some other reason, it can be quite slow and certain features aren't available whilst it doing its indexing

### "My daily driver: An indispensable too"

November 25, 2025

5.0

PhpStorm works exceptionally well. It has become an indispensable part of my stack; I honestly couldn't imagine working without it now. It is reliable, powerful, and keeps me productive every single day.

Pros

Its seamless integration into my daily workflow. It is my everyday tool, and I particularly appreciate the intelligent code completion, robust debugging, and refactoring capabilities. It fits my development style perfectly.

Cons

It can be slightly resource-intensive (RAM) during the initial indexing of very large projects, and it slow to startup, but the performance trade-off is absolutely worth it for the features provided.

### "Resource heavy but worth it"

November 12, 2021

The overall experience is positive and I would recommend the software. It makes my days programming easier.

Pros

Everything you need for web development, code completion is very good, he plugin system allows to expand the product with additional features that are community driven, but very welcome, to make the product fuller.

Cons

The product is quite resource heavy with all the additional indexing and code completion features. Be prepared to allocate quite a bit of ram to it.

### "A bit pricey, but totally worth it if you're serious about your work"

May 26, 2022

5.0

It massively improved my productivity since I started using it. It's literally a single tool/IDE that will provide you with everything you need to work on your PHP websites, all in one place. It also has many features that make it much easier to debug and refactor code.

Pros

It has many native integrations, including SFTP, GIT, Xdebug, MySQL, etc. If set up correctly, it's very powerful.

Cons

It's a bit pricey and it can be slow at times, but it's totally worth it, in my opinion.

### "The best software to manage PHP projects"

July 27, 2019

4.0

Pros

PhpStorm comes with a lot of built in features. It is easy to get started but you can also do some really advanced things if necessary. The autocompletion is really fast and good. The inline documentation lookup is very useful and makes programming a lot faster if you forgot what a method does exactly or how it should be used. It is also very accurate at giving type errors when needed, which is quite difficult with PHP since it is dynamically typed. It can also handle very large projects without becoming unresponsive or slow, even with searching through files.

Cons

Sometimes PhpStorm interprets a variable as having a different type than it actually has when there are two classes in the project with the same name. Autocompletion of object functions only works when PhpStorm knows exactly the type of the variable. Sometimes it can be hard to find certain settings/options because of the large number of customizable settings.

### "Makes your life as a PHP developer much easier"

June 5, 2019

5.0

I have used PhpStorm for well over 10 years to develop PHP as well as JavaScript applications. It has never disappointed me on any front.

Pros

PhpStorm is one of the best tools out there for a PHP developer to use. It provides support for a great deal of PHP frameworks straight out of the box, with the option of expanding greatly with plugin support. What I love the most about it is its extensive support for different testing frameworks and its capability of running them within the IDE itself. For example, I was amazed to find how extensively PhpStorm supports Behat testing with Gherkin and Cucumber. The ability to install plugins also enables you to support development for many JavaScript frameworks as well.

Cons

The price point is the main issue with PhpStorm, with there being no community edition available.

### "Developer friendly IDE for PHP developer"

May 24, 2022

5.0

If I like to say about the overall experience, I can simply say that this application is totally awesome. I prefer to use this application for my daily work. I have no subscription so it's a problem for me but the application is so good. I think this application comes with new features day by day. Best of luck!

Pros

The interface of this software is so attractive. Code completion and finding class or method references are awesome. Managing a big project it's pretty awesome. You can easily manage a big project. It has the support for multiple languages, with PHP HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Vue js support are so nice. I loved this very much & it is also a recommended application.

Cons

All of the features of this application are good, but if I like to say about the cons of it I can simply say that it's a little bit slow and memory-consuming application than others, but as an IDE it's good. And the second thing is the subscription price is big for startup developers, and who are outside the United States because of the conversion of USD rate. It's my personal opinion.

### "Overpriced but one of the most astonishing IDE for PHP development."

October 23, 2022

4.0

I have been using it for almost 2 years now and it is the finest IDE for PHP projects. Highly Recommended.

Pros

It gives an overall package needed for PHP development. We can customize themes according to our preference, install plugins needed to make coding simplified and fun. Integration with GitHub helps a lot and we can manage our code very easily. Multiple developers can work on a single license. Compare with clipboard and check local history of code are life saving features.

Cons

It is high priced! If the license expires, it only gives you 30 minutes of usage time. It takes almost half of the memory, you will need a good configuration system to run big projects.

### "Best IDE for software development for PHP "

June 21, 2021

5.0

All in all the pros out weight the cons by a mile, it's a great tool specifically for software development it got all that you'll need for php and much more. And once I've got my hands on this software, I've finally stop from jumping to one IDE to another.

Pros

\* Cross-platform \* Supports javascript and js frameworks as well ie: VueJS, NodeJS \* Ease of use \* It comes ready to use right out the box \* Feature rich with terminal command line, mysql and git integrations ready (you'll love the git one) \* Tons of plugins that will make your development experience a lot easier and faster \* Easy integration with PHP frameworks and tools such as Symfony, Laravel and PHPunit

Cons

\* Eats quite a hefty amount of RAM, if you have a below average setup you'll have a hard time running this IDE along with other tools such as MySQL Workbench \* Since it's a bit RAM hungry it also affects it's speed when in peak operation, it's not particularly slow, but you'll also have to use a relatively optimum hardware to experience a optimum/fast performance out of it.
