### "The ultimate intelligent IDE for professional PHP development"

May 18, 2026

5.0

PhpStorm has been like the backbone to my PHP , and full-stack workflow for years now. Honestly it goes well beyond what people call a plain text editor; it kinda feels like an intelligent assistant that actually gets the structure of my frameworks, such as Laravel and Symfony . Even with the higher resource use it still, in practice, feels worth it because the productivity boosts , the automated suggestions and all those code-quality improvements they really do justify the license price for serious professional development.

Pros

Honestly the deep code understanding and those advanced refactoring capabilities feel kind of unmatched. In PhpStorm , I notice it catches errors as I type, and it pushes these really relevant quick-fixes, like right there. The native hookup with Xdebug is pretty seamless too, so debugging even more complex backend applications becomes almost straightforward. On top of that, I’m always using the database tools , especially through DataGrip integration, and the Git integration is excellent. It helps me manage branches and deal with conflicts without having to leave the IDE, which I really appreciate.

Cons

It’s basically a heavy , JVM-based IDE, so yeah it does end up with a pretty large memory footprint. On those bigger legacy projects with massive codebases , indexing can take a few minutes at least, and it can trigger noticeable CPU spikes even on a solid machine. Also , even though the new UI rollout is a step in the right direction , it still brings a steep learning curve, because reconfiguring particular tool windows isn’t always straightforward if you’re used to the old layout.

### "Great IDE with complete Featureset"

June 3, 2026

4.0

Overall I'm, very happy with the IDE, the integration with WSL on windows has improved a lot over the years and by now the only real flaw is the memory hogging and the freezes. Still I would recommend it.

Pros

The all around feature set is amazing, at first I was critical of switching to a paid IDE, but the quality really speaks for itself. The clean and effortless integration of search, debugging, git, docker and database queries is so effortless I only really notice how well it works when trying out one of the new "Ai IDES" missing all these features.

Cons

The biggest Gripe and the reason why its only 4 stars is the crashes and freezes. Every few months there is a period of 1-2 months when the ide becomes extremely unrealiable either freezing for several seconds regularly or as is the case right now completely locking up requiring an total restart. Killing all the open instances and running processes inside it (like Coding agents etc.)

### "All-in-One for PHP, But not lightweight"

October 3, 2025

4.0

I’ve been using PhpStorm for about a year for CodeIgniter and Laravel projects. While it sometimes feels heavy compared to other editors, the advanced debugging, code navigation, and refactoring tools save me a lot of time. Overall, PhpStorm is a professional IDE that is worth it for serious PHP development.

Pros

PhpStorm automatically suggests code, detects errors early, and helps with syntax highlighting.Works really well with Laravel and CodeIgniter.

Cons

It’s a subscription-based paid IDE, which may be expensive compared to free editors like VS Code.Beginners might find too many features confusing at first.

PhpStorm is a full IDE with many built-in tools (debugger, database tools, version control, etc.). This richness makes it use more RAM, CPU, and disk I/O, especially when opening large projects. Sublime Text is much lighter to run.

### "Solid IDE with regular updates"

March 25, 2026

5.0

Overall PhpStorm is my favourite development IDE and I use it more than just PHP including Twig, VueJS and more.

Pros

I like using PhpStorm as, not only is it great for PHP development with Symfony and Twig but also for JavaScript. I personally use it for VueJS. This is due to the plugins you can install. It fully integrates with Github and Github Copilot, has great code searching facilities. The learning curve is minimal and overall it straightword to use.

Cons

There are times when PhpStorm will occasionally freeze. This seems to happen on my Mac environment. I'm not sure how it performs on other environments.

### "PhpStorm - the solution you never knew you needed"

September 2, 2025

5.0

I have been a daily user for 4 years now, and have convinced colleagues to try it. All who have tried it, switched to it, or to Webstorm.

Pros

It is really a complete solution for building websites and applications with PHP. The ease of installation and use is staggering. There is a plethora of good plugins from assistance with other languages to debugging. The learning curve is almost nonexistent and the code editing is a dream.

Cons

No real cons on normal usage. When refactoring folders in a large codebase it would be helpful if the app would differentiate more between usage of same.

### "Great PHP IDE"

March 28, 2022

5.0

I use PhpStorm as my primary IDE for all my PHP related freelance projects. I use it with Laravel and Wordpress projects and am able to customize it for both types of projects quickly and easily.

Pros

Clean, simple, customizable, and easy to use. It is loaded with features and has a vast array of plugins to extend functionality beyond what’s available “out-of-the-box”.

Cons

Sometimes the indexing slows down my computer and if a project is not set up properly, it will consistently re-index after changes are made.

### "PHPStorm - my go to IDE for several years"

October 2, 2025

5.0

Very happy, or I wouldn't keep renewing every year. They keep the system up to date with the latest versions of PHP and most of the time if Im watching youtube videos, the person is more than likely using PHP Storm so it seems to be popular with people other than me

Pros

I've been using it for years. I tried VS Code and I tried a multitude of other IDEs over the years but PHP Storm seemed to just gel with me. I love the debugging tools, the remote file view, the ability to edit a remote file, and linking to github to name but a few

Cons

It can be heavy on memory. I guess for what it's doing it may not be but I quite often have 3 or 4 projects open at the same time and you really notice your memory disappearing. They do regular updates but when it has to rebuild the indexes after a new version or for some other reason, it can be quite slow and certain features aren't available whilst it doing its indexing

### "Preferred IDE for seasoned PHP developers"

January 8, 2026

4.0

I've been using PhpStorm for over 10 years and it has always been, and remains to this day, my preferred IDE.

Pros

PhpStorm is a feature-full IDE designed with PHP developers in mind. On top of standard code editing, testing, and debugging features, it brings all the best that JetBrains has to offer from its suite of products. It's easy to use, and intuitive, with a small learning curve, and it's capable of handling multiple languages that are critical to building modern web apps.

Cons

There really isn't much to complain about with PhpStorm. On the odd occasion, you may run into memory usage issues. This product is a beast, and does require a fairly robust machine to run efficiently.

### "My daily driver: An indispensable too"

November 25, 2025

5.0

PhpStorm works exceptionally well. It has become an indispensable part of my stack; I honestly couldn't imagine working without it now. It is reliable, powerful, and keeps me productive every single day.

Pros

Its seamless integration into my daily workflow. It is my everyday tool, and I particularly appreciate the intelligent code completion, robust debugging, and refactoring capabilities. It fits my development style perfectly.

Cons

It can be slightly resource-intensive (RAM) during the initial indexing of very large projects, and it slow to startup, but the performance trade-off is absolutely worth it for the features provided.

### "Best PHP IDE on the market."

May 13, 2022

5.0

I was using PHPStorm for almost 2 years and it was a really good period with efficient work. To be honest, I started my real programming job with this tool, so it was also a learning experience. I cannot say a bad word about PHPStorm. It is reliable and has a multitude of features that allow to ease the work, automate tedious processes, and simplify cross-software integrations. Because IDE has native JS and TS support, it was a pleasure to create automated tests with the possibility to check PHP app code in the same window. Besides all the pros, I found one con that seems to be shared throughout all JetBrains software - PHPStorm sometime lags during indexing, but it was a minor issue. Also one time, after my half of the year work, all my configurations disappeared, but it may be just me, new to the software. All in all, if you are using PHP and JS or TS - you won't be disappointed. It is a great piece of code!

Pros

Ease of use. Adjustability. Various prompts, suggestions, explanations, etc. Plugin 'shop'. Multifunctional combo software.

Cons

Some lagging while indexing. Price is prohibitive for private use.

### "Great Dev Tool for Code Management"

February 17, 2022

5.0

PhpStorm being a detailed tool allowed us to carry out our work. We found Php Storm to be faster and quicker in compiling process and integration with our applications. It meets our requirement for Code management with teamwork, file sync and all in one place coding and management. Very easy to refresh the code and compile with enough resources

Pros

Php Storm was a great match and fit for our organization to deal with the code management, code development and connecting to our linux for all in one place solution. We found Php Storm to be faster and quicker in compiling process and integration with our applications.

Cons

Php Storm uses more resources so you have to make sure the hardware you are using is compatible enough to run large code compiling and execution.

### "For complex codebases, PHPStorm is a versatile and feature-rich IDE."

February 21, 2023

5.0

Only a few of our organization's developers use PhpStorm. The greatest IDE for PHP/web development currently available, in my opinion, is PhpStorm. I required a solution for the development of several PHP applications. It is true that Phpstorm is an all-in-one programming solution because of the abundance of fantastic features it provides. It typically fixes the issue of requiring many tools to finish a task.

Pros

Popular PHP debugging tools with easy settings that function even while operating inside a virtual machine. automatic creation of helpful features like autocomplete and tooltips from the PHPDoc comments of a project. Theme Design

Cons

When a project is attached to an open project, the project structure is not obvious. A more complete implementation of the Git client is what I would like to see. I firmly believe they could provide a product that would be competitive with GitKraken, Sourcetree, or SmartGit if they invested a bit more time into it.

### "The best IDE for PHP based projects"

February 23, 2022

5.0

Pros

PHPStorm is made to support all PHP based projects even Laravel and CodeIgnitor. It indexes the entire project to provide autocomplete features and I find it the most productive IDE for PHP. I hate having multiple IDEs but for any PHP based, my goto is PHPStorm.

Cons

The only con I find is that unlike VSCode, this doesn't have a very easy to use search in entire project feature. I prefer VSCode's search over this.

### "My favorite IDE of all time"

June 24, 2019

5.0

Pros

JetBrains products are amazing, and this is the best php IDE out there. It has so many smart features and it is also able to be highly customized to the specific needs and style of the programmer. Makes my life SO much easier. JetBrains also makes it managable to learn the wide breadth of functionalities the software has to offer: from a "tip of the day" popup to slowly introduce you to new features, to the extensive documentation and video tutorials they offer on their website.

Cons

The only drawback about this software is the price. I got hooked on JetBrains products when I was in college and has a free student license. Out of college I am paying quite a lot as an individual user.

### "PhpStorm - Leading PHP IDE"

July 22, 2019

5.0

It has been my pleasure to be working with this one of a kind IDE. You could spend you lifetime learning and using all its magnificent and glorious set of tools and extended features. This is my main go to IDE for all the coding that I do one a daily basis and have no intentions of ever trading.

Pros

PhpStorm is a super smart PHP IDE and one of the best to my knowledge on the market. It has some of the most used features you love including but not limited to code completion to help speed up the work flow, parameter hints to help remind you of the order of parameters, Inspection, keyword completion, a fully fledged HTTP client built into the IDE, code refactor in the case you forgot to indent etc., a database browser for editing and execution along with a database terminal and also, the famous version control which is built-in, reducing the need to leave the IDE which coding. PhpStorm also has completions, inspections and intentions built in for CSS, JavaScript and HTML and many more front-end technologies along with refactorings, unit testing and debugging . In additions to the may awesome, time saving and productive features and tools, PhpStorm has support for many major frameworks including Laravel, Joomla, cakePHP, Symfony and more. How cool is that!

Cons

With so many awesome features and tools available in this IDE, I have no dislikes at this moment.

### "Robust. Awesome. PHP code editor."

December 20, 2022

Best IDE ever to use with PHP language. Lots of inspections on your code and easy to use.

Pros

Use this IDE every day to develop my project in PHP language. It is very robust and contains every feature which is on my mind. Easy to use. Nice UX/UI which is modern. Always up-to date with new PHP versions. Love option to add more plugins. Tons of inspections.

Cons

It is a bit slow. Launch time take some time. Also it is a bit resource expensive, it always consume lot of RAM memory on my computer during development process.

Reason for choosing PhpStorm

Price. Features. Options.

### "I live by this"

July 25, 2019

4.0

The sort of development work that I do, I couldn't live without PHPStorm. It's worth every cent. My working life would be somewhat miserable without it.

Pros

This is in all likelihood the best PHP IDE out there. I have tried many other IDE's and editors but no matter how I personalise and tweak them, they don't come close to the functionality provided by PHPStorm. The plugin system caters for most of your typical use cases and you can even add functionality for other languages or framework support. The tips/hints/suggestions that the IDE provides also helps to guide you to cleaner code. If your day job involves PHP then you need to make this IDE your daily driver.

Cons

Being a Java based product it doesn't feel as snappy as what a native macos application feels. There are times where small changes would result in full project indexing which could be annoying at times but it's not train smash. There's not a lot of negative things to say regarding PHPStorm.

Pros

There are so many features that aid in development such as support for many different programming languages and frameworks, as well as many plugins that are available that can further improve your workflow.

Cons

The complexity can be very confusing at first to someone that has never used an IDE with so many features however it can be easy to learn the basics and begin programming. Beyond this, learning more advanced features can be hard without using tutorials.

I've used many PHP IDE's out there, and this one is definitely the best.

Pros

With it's neat user interface, great code completion features and very useful debugging tools it offers all a developer needs, is continually developed and kept up-to-date and makes coding fun.

Cons
