### "A good code editor"

February 22, 2024

4.0

VSCode is a good IDE, that allows developers to code in a decent way. Sadly, the fact that VSCode needs a plugin for everything may be a bit discouraging, but after this step and one everything is working fine, VSCode is an amazing (free !) code editor.

Pros

VSCode is a very light IDE. It doesn't require much RAM nor CPU, and is working well on almost every computer.

Cons

VSCode needs to install plugins/add-ons in order to be useful. It may be long and complex for small projects, and may take a lot of time

### "The most complete code editor"

July 26, 2023

4.0

Pros

What I like the most about it is its wide customizability, being able to customize the development environment as much as the user wants.

Cons

What I like the least could be that it could be noted as slower and a heavier memory and battery consumer in comparison with other lighter editors.

### "VS Code: the de facto standard IDE"

December 11, 2023

5.0

Pros

A snappy editor with a huge ecosystem of plugins. It works great, the command palette rocks and language support is second to none. Nicely configurable, but unlikely to suck you into hours and hours of customization (sorry emacs lovers).

Cons

Microsoft powered telemetry is a bit frustrating, and it's definitely not super light.

### "Visual Studio Code, the best coding buddy you could ask for"

August 31, 2023

5.0

We are using Visual Studio Code to program and develop software, we have a team using it with JS, another team with GO and I am using it with Python, it speaks for itself when it's cross-compatible in multiple languages.

Pros

Visual Studio made coding fun and easy, integration was really easy, all you need to do is install it and start coding, shortcuts are insanely useful, and plugins are out of this world.

Cons

I think some kernel selection in Python could be improved, sometimes it doesn't detect the one it's supposed to and you get some weird errors, but It has improved a lot since last version, hope it keeps going that way.

I made the switch personally because of the fantastic plugin possibilities in Visual Studio, which made it much better and easier to code.

### "User friendly code editor with amazing featuers"

March 26, 2024

5.0

Visual Studio Code has been the only code editor I have used since 2020 when I started learning to code. I have never had issues with this editor and its simplicity and at the same time its complexity has allowed me to learn a lot about programming, source code managing, version control, and more. I've tried Visual Studio Code on Windows and Linux (Ubuntu) and I had zero issues on both OS.

Pros

You can integrate it wih anything you like: plugins, themes, extensions etc. You can manage versions of your project integrating Git and GitHub. You can customize the UI with the hundreds of plugins available. One of my favorite features is "Open with VS Code" so you can open up your folders/files directly with Visual Studio Code.

Cons

The bug tracking feature still confuses me and I have not been able to use it at its finest.

### "VSCode and the turnover of the market"

March 21, 2024

5.0

Pros

It's free, open-source, highly maintained, compatible with all platforms, highly configurable, easy to develop for and on. Huge online community and contributors and high integration with almost any available product out there.

Cons

Projects are scoped into project files, and it's quite difficult to manage in a single windows all the other projects that you might be working at the same time with different configurations. This also includes the ssh tunnels to server machines to visualize the folder and file structure and make real time modifications, which requires you most of the time to have a separate window instead of a tab in the same one.

Overall experience is super awesome. In my 8 years of web development journey, this is the only tool which doesn't have an alternative.

Pros

\- If you are a web developer, it has everything you need. I never felt need for its alternative. - The code editor its build on top of, its cool. I myself use the same open source technology on many projects. So its kind of personal favourite for me. - You get extensions for almost everything. Plus being a developer you can build any extensive you need. - Whether I am on a Windows Pc or Ubuntu or Mac, I can get same experience. If it had cloud support for settings & config, that would be awesome.

Cons

\- Its built on top on chrome, so it comes with its issues. I.e. slow, consume more memory etc. You can easily differentiate performance of vscode and sublime. - It should provide a cloud support for settings and user preferences. Whenever I switch machines or operating system, I have to migrate all the settings & configs. Simple user sign in and sync like in Google chrome would be nice.

### "The most versatile source-code editor"

July 2, 2022

5.0

VS Code is my favorite code editor for web application and Python.

Pros

VS code is an open source source-code editor which means it is built for developers by developers. The app is very easy to use and supports many programming languages and frameworks with the help of extensions. The look and feel of the app is also highly customizable. VS Code is available on Windows, Linux and Mac and also easily accessible as a web application via any popular browser. The Live Share extension allows programmers to share the project with collaborators to edit and voice chat over the Internet in real-time. Other useful features include intelligent code completion, syntax highlighting, remote connection (also with WSL), code snippets and source control with embedded Git. Many programmers now use VS Code to code for Android using Flutter.

Cons

Some settings are not very easy to toggle. For some extensions also the settings are not so easy as they require configuration file changes which might be difficult for beginner users. Sometimes the name 'Visual Studio Code' confuses people with Microsoft's IDE 'Microsoft Visual Studio'.

Switched from

There are a lot of plugins and projects management related functionalities available on VS Code when compared to the slightly light weight Sublime. Finding and installing plugins in VS Code is relatively easier than Sublime.

### "Visual studio code is a blessing for software engineering students."

July 5, 2023

5.0

Pros

I like many things about Visual Studio Code, but here are a few of my favorites:It's free and open source. This means that anyone can use it, and the community is constantly contributing new features and improvements. It's cross-platform. You can use it on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It's highly customizable. You can change the look and feel of the editor, as well as the keyboard shortcuts and other settings. It has a great extension ecosystem.

Cons

I have a few minor gripes with Visual Studio Code, but overall I think it's a great code editor. Here are a few things that I don't like as much:The font rendering can be a bit inconsistent. This is especially noticeable on high-DPI displays. The debugger can be a bit slow, especially for large projects. The extension ecosystem is a bit overwhelming. There are so many extensions available that it can be hard to find the ones that you need. The default keybindings can be a bit awkward. I've had to change a few of them to make them more comfortable for me

### "VS- Code; a fantastic text editor"

September 27, 2020

5.0

VS-Code is fast, customizable, and supports multiple programming languages. It is great in visual tweaks, as it is well suited for syntax highlighting, autocomplete, and the snippets for indented Sass. Moreover, using VS-code is like using most out of it. With a single mnemonics, you can expand the texts with just a mnemonics and 'tab' key. VS-code has everything I need for front-end development. VS-Code offers a lot of features including IntelliSense, which is great in showing code hints and auto-completing just on steroids.

Pros

VS- Code is great when it comes to typing syntax, it provides better suggestions, and a little more info and briefings for every code you type. The next thing, I loved about VS-Code is debugging. It has an in-built git, extensions market, plugins, and more. The most significant thing about the VS-Code is the simple text editor that supports split-screen inside the text editor itself. VS-Code has its own terminal for development. I mostly use its internal terminal for changing directories, compiling, and debugging the programs. So, it's simply great I don't need external terminals or command prompts for executing my programs.

Cons

Since VS-Code is not particularly an IDE, it mainly depends on other IDE like Android Studio and JetBrains IntelliJ. In case if you need to extract codes or backups from these IDEs, it will be much of a hectic job, and this is much disappointing for the developers.

### "Best editor I've used for web projects"

September 1, 2019

5.0

So far it's the best editor I have used for web projects, specially for front-end projects. For some languages though it may be a better idea to use a specialized editor.

Pros

\- Updated frequently. - Has many useful extensions, from adding support to a certain language to performing simple tasks like auto formatting import declarations. - It works specially well with JavaScript and TypeScript, with fast and reliable auto-completing and linting features, and has an amazing Angular framework extension. - It's very light to run. Even with a lot of extensions active it still runs well on older computers. - It comes right out of the box with a very powerful and easy to use git tool. - Its text editor has a lot of accessibility and quality of life simple yet nice to have features, like easy zoom-in and out, line wrapping, auto trim of trailing white spaces, multi cursor, among others.

Cons

\- Currently it doesn't work so well with Python and it's very limited with C#, even with both having official extensions. - Its debugger, while very powerful, isn't so easy to set up, and more than once I simply preferred to just use the browser's debugger instead.

### "VSC is now the de facto Python editor"

May 10, 2021

5.0

VSC allows me to open a directory instead of a file, so I can have all files at glance and with different color codes according to changes related with the status in the repo. The first thing I do after opening the directory is to set up the conda environment (if not automatically detected) and then I know I am good to go, if I run the code from VSC I can see how the script is invoked using Conda so I can do it manually if needed (like from another screen).

Pros

Visual Studio Code behaves well with Conda environments. It search for installed environments and selects the right one most the times according to your code, when it fails to select the environment, you can manually select the correct one. If the env you need is not in the list of available envs, I have to look in Internet how to manually add an env because it is not so intuitive, but this is not a frequent occurrence. The fact that it integrates with both Conda and Git, makes my life as a Python developer way easier. Another nice feature is that when a file changes on disk, this is always reflected in the editor, without the need of a manual reload. The support for Python (using the plugins) is superb, now I can say that Microsoft is taking this language as a first class citizen.

Cons

It is a little bit heavy in resource usage. My 6 Gb laptop freezes sometimes when VSC and Chrome are both active, and I use both programs together. The inline help is not always useful and hard to read because it needs lot of scrolling.

### "The text editor for all your needs"

January 11, 2022

5.0

Overall, I'm sticking with VSCode on the long run. I've used other text editors such as Notepad++ and Sublime Text, but VSCode is by far the best. It's UI is more polished, and is packed wih features in the form of extensions, which makes a very verstaile tool, no matter what programming language or framework you develop in.

Pros

\- it's very easy to use, and is compatible with a wide variety of programming languages - it has a lot of plugins, rangin from linting, UI customization, and even DB clients. It's a very poweful text editor - it has a big community, which makes it easy to troubleshoot or find shortcuts to do things faster - it comes with a debugger included - it can be used in Windows and UNIX based systems - it lets you use the console from within the text editor

Cons

\- it can take up a significant amount of computer resources - the source code control tab could be more intuitive - it takes some effort to customize the UI to your liking

Switched from

[Sublime Text](https://www.capterra.com/p/179535/Sublime-Text/)

Because I needed a text editor with more powerful linting and text completion features. Also, VSCode let's you open the command line from within itself, and comes embedded with a debugger, which fits all of my needs as a developer.

### "The #1 code editor available today."

May 16, 2022

Apart from the actual operating system, Visual Studio Code is the most-used software on my computer. It is consistently fast and once you get into the swing of it, easy to use. The keyboard shortcuts, cuts my development time drastically

Pros

It's a heavy weight product that's FREE! Seriously there is so much to Visual Studio Code that making it free to download and use makes it a no-brainer to use this software.

Cons

Occasional bugs, but they are almost always taken care of within a day or two.

### "Fast and full featured development software"

May 30, 2019

5.0

With VS Code I have found everything I need in a text editor to develop websites, fast, light and multiplatform. It has given me the opportunity to continue programming regardless of the fact that my computer is not so powerful.

Pros

Without a doubt, what I like most about Visual Studio Code is how fast it works on my computer. One click on the icon and it quickly opens with the last document on which I was working. It has a simple interface to use (see cons) and very neat, everything is easily found when you are working. Widely recommended for web development since it works perfectly with languages such as PHP, Javascript and both processed and preprocessed styles. Another feature that I love, is that it has integrated GIT, you can commit, push and version your work directly from the editor. Additionally, it has a powerful search engine to add extensions, turning the editor into an app with an endless number of great features   Finally it has support for all operating system versions, I use it on Mac, Windows and Linux without any problem.

Cons

The editor works perfectly, but it has something that I do not like, when you want to configure something of the application, you have to do it with code and it is a bit complicated to set the parameters since I do not know all the commands available for the configurations. This happens a lot with the extensions that configuring them in the editor is sometimes a headache. I think they should improve the configuration interface.
