August 23, 2016 4.0 At my previous firm we used various programs for timekeeping, billing, and accounting. I wanted an all-in-one program to handle everything. CosmoLex was the only option that met my needs. Pros The tracking of trust balances is a critical aspect of any practice and CosmoLex makes it very easy. I also like the ability to see all of my active files at a glance and being able to associate the items on my task list with a specific matter. Cons On the accounting side, I would like to be able to associate a document with a specific accounting entry. For example, when I receive an invoice and enter the payment into CosmoLex I would like to be able to save that invoice within CosmoLex and have it connected to that specific payment transaction. October 31, 2017 5.0 Pros It does proper legal trust accounting so I don't have to panic about billing hourly. Previously I didn't bill hourly at all due to fear so this has been great. Cons I don't believe I can bill for an initial trust deposit/retainer. This would be a good feature since I have to send a letter/email for the retainer instead which doesn't integrate with CosmoLex. You are correct in that you cannot 'bill' for a trust retainer as bill payments result in income, however we do have a unique feature with our LawPay integration called "Online Trust Retainer Payment" Once your integration is set up you can send an email from CosmoLex requesting a trust retainer payment. They can even click on a link in the email and pay online, which results in your retainer amount updating in our system. If you are interested in learning more about this function,please let us know! I was looking for practice management software that combined both functions: billing and accounting. Cosmolex was the answer. Pros combining billing and accounting functionality in one software package; making accounting functions easy-to-use for non-accountants; providing convenient access from smart phones and other devices; and cloud storage of data. I believe they have successfully achieve" July 2, 2015 5.0 I started at a firm in November and was told the state auditor did not like how their current Accounting software Peachtree tracked client funds. They were looking for a running balance on each client and Peachtree does not do that through jobs. Nor will Quickbooks appropriately. One night while I was racking my brain as to how to solve this issue. I thought there has to be accounting software for law firms. So my web search began. I was looking for an all in one software that would not only track client funds but also take care of the business end of accounting. I found thousands of software that were more for case management. As I continued my search I came across CosmoLex and one other that could meet the need I was looking for. I called and spoke with Teresa who was very informative and patient with all my questions. I also was impressed by the fact Rick took the time to really see what I needed and explained how CosmoLex was going to evolve to be a perfect fit for me. I love the constant feedback CosmoLex is looking for from their users and their willingness to constantly tweak the software to continue to suit the needs of their clients. Cons some things take too many steps; no way to change things (like time cards) in bulk (i.e. ctrl click or shift click to change something about all of them at once); can't send an invoice for a trust retainer; can't change accounts on expense card if you accidentally enter it in the wrong account (you have to delete the whole transaction); there should be a n alphabet bar at the top of contacts (and Matters) so you can click a letter and easily jump to those listings. Including LawPay in the package is a huge added bonus. Pros The software is fairly intuitive, but also comes with a comprehensive teaching database that is very easy to follow. Cons Some of the explanations on how to use the accounting portion of the platform are not intuitive and the included videos and help features are not always helpful. However, the customer support staff is very helpful in all aspects. Reason for choosing CosmoLex CosmoLex seemed to be better suited and more flexible for a solo/very small practice. " June 25, 2019 5.0 I am a solo practitioner and the software allows me to do everything from my desk. Pros The support, however, has been fantastic. I usually can have problems resolved within an hour. Cons The software is a bit cumbersome when moving between different areas such as matters and activities. The financial accounting features were an added bonus. The practice management features streamline my practice and give me a client centric organization that gives me a different perspective on my cases and allows me to cut down on wasted time. Pros I like the billing and financial accounting features the most. The tasks are helpful and I like the fact that they are organized by client. Cons The calendar needs work. You should be able to scroll through each matter on the "matter" page without having to go back to the master list of clients. Cons It would be great if CosmoLex adds a calendar system with features similar to Calendly.
