### "A great free option for GA4 dashboards and analytics"

April 30, 2026

5.0

I've been working with Data Studio for four years and find it to be one of the best free dashboard and analytics tools for small to medium businesses situated on the GA4 platform.

Pros

Data Studio was easy enough to learn without comprehensive analytics training. Since our company is a Google Analtics shop, it's an easy tool to get top-level analytics for web pages. While you can also bring in other data sources using paid APIs, we only used the free version. The easiest way to get started is by selecting a pre-created template, connecting your live data, and customizing from there, working backwards to pull in the metrics you need for reporting. My favorite feature is the page specific filtering options, allowing us to customize a dashboard view for any parameter we had in our GA4 data lake.

Cons

I found Data studio to be buggy at times, and dashboards that haven't been touched in months would break. Sometimes a module would need to be refreshed or deleted and recreated in order to get it to display properly again. This occurred more often with dashboards that had several different custom filters applied AND/OR were pulling from multiple analytics accounts and blending data. Also it should be stated that the switch to GA4 made the dashboard creation process more complex, as the new event type was counted differently from previous metrics like 'views'.

### "A viable option for business intelligence automation when your software budget is near zero"

February 4, 2021

3.0

Overall, after coming to terms with the constraints of DS as a business intelligence automation tool we were a le to design great products for our teams that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. Being able to automate analysis because of the ubiquity of Google sheets connectors made this an incredible free option for a non profit organization.

Pros

It seems that every third party SaaS that collects data online has native synchronization support for Google sheets. And this is how Google Data Studio makes itself the best option for non profits and small businesses in need of automated business intelligence. On top of the plug'n'play integration experience, data studio has a unique approach to interactive chart and dashboard design that lets you position elements as if you were working in Adobe Photoshop. You can add shapes, layer elements on top of each other, add text or objects anywhere. This means you can produce the most beautiful and intuitive dashboards and reports ever (or the least if you're more of a Picasso).

Cons

It really is the poor man's business intelligence automation tool. Some key setbacks for data scientists is that data studio can only do 1 type of join/blend (outter left) and when using blended data to create calculated fields it really feel more like art than science, and not always working out. There is also no way to create unions across all data sources or make a file directory a data source. All this means that you really need to do a lot of data prep in Google sheets and find a way to do some automatic data blending in Google sheets as well in some cases. This will keep the complexity of your needs in Data Studio minimal, which seems to work best.

### "Simple tool for building and sharing dashboards"

March 11, 2026

4.0

Overall I had a good experience using Google Data Studio. It is a great tool for creating dashboards and sharing insights with a team. It is easy to learn and works well for regular reporting and simple analytics.

Pros

I like how easy it is to build dashboards and visualize data. The interface is simple and you can connect many different data sources like Google Analytics or spreadsheets. It is very useful to share reports with a team and keep everyone aligned on the same data.

Cons

Sometimes the performance can be slow when working with large datasets. Some advanced data transformations are also limited compared to more technical tools. It can require some workarounds depending on the data source.

Alternatives considered

[Metabase](https://www.capterra.com/p/176651/Metabase/)

Reason for choosing Google Data Studio

I chose Google Data Studio over Metabase mainly because it integrates very easily with other Google tools. We were already using Google Analytics and Google Sheets, so it was simple to connect the data and build dashboards quickly. It was also easier to share reports with teammates and stakeholders. The interface is very visual and people can access the dashboards with a simple link without much setup.

### "Changed the way I can access and build report!"

January 24, 2024

5.0

My experience is extremely positive, and adopting GDS has been beneficial both at the individual and team level. It allows more flexibility in building and accessing our reports, and the visual dashboards allowed us to share insights without transforming the data in other softwares, greatly simplifying our workflow.

Pros

As an end user accessing Google Data Studio to review performance reports, what I like most is the ability to consolidate different reports in a visually compelling dashboard. The easy to use interface allows to quickly navigate reports and get at-a-glance insights on relevant KPIs and monitor trends.

Cons

Adapting to Google Data Studio has been a learning curve, especially coming from previous reporting software. Interface is clear, but to customize it in order to fits my needs took longer than I expected. Collaborative aspects are beneficial, there was an adjustment period in coordinating with team members who were also learning the platform.

### "Solid Free Dashboard Tool for Everyday Reporting"

December 1, 2025

5.0

Overall it’s been good. It’s simple to use, gets the job done, and makes it easy to show data in a clean way. Not perfect, but for a free tool it covers almost everything I need. Great for lightweight reporting and sharing visuals with others.

Pros

It’s easy to build reports without needing anything advanced. Drag-and-drop charts, simple layout tools, and quick data connections make it really fast to get a dashboard live. The sharing options and real-time updates are also super convenient.

Cons

Some connectors are slow or limited, and bigger datasets can make reports lag. A few features feel hidden or overly basic compared to other BI tools. It’s great for quick dashboards, but not always the best for heavy reporting.

When I was GCP cloud technical support team lead, Data Studio is a frequently used products from GCP user, especially the billing exporting to BigQuery then analyze function.

Pros

Easy to use, what I normally used is to generate report from BigQuery, only requires several steps then my report generated.

Cons

Sometime the dashboard is little complicated to manage, I found I lost in different components easily.

### "A promising platform for Business Intelligence dashboards"

April 16, 2026

4.0

We use a google ecosystem so it fits ridicuolusly easy into our workflow. It's cheap to set up, loading times are fast, and the options for creation and customisation of dashboards seem decent. I've only been using it a few months, but so far it does everything I want from such a platform. Considering how expensive competetive software can be, it's great!

Pros

An easy to use, browser based platform for creating dashboards from datasets. We use it for internal Business Intelligence use. I love that it requires no additional software, and can connect easily to our MySQL tables.

Cons

As it's a relitively new product, there is some bugs. For example, sometimes I struggled to edit the title card and had to refresh the page to get it to load. Also, sometimes the graph creation seems a bit counter-intuitive, when compared to other similar platforms.

### "Reporting that is powerful enough for most, and affordable for all"

June 7, 2022

5.0

Data Studio has really improved over the last year or two. It's much more stable than it used to be, and is more in depth. As a small agency, I haven't found much that is missing. Outside of setting up integrations and data sources and then creating the dashboard connections, the rest is fairly simple to set up. Customizing a dashboard is easy, and sorting data is easy once you do a couple and learn the dimensions of how data is displayed. Having a free dashboard and reporting tool that integrates directly with other Google products is awesome.

Pros

I love that it's a tool directly from the same company where I get most of my data already. I use Google Analytics and Google Ads heavily in my business, so it's awesome to have a data analysis and reporting tool that has stable connections to both of these. Being able to integrate both, and other integrations into the same dashboard is a big plus. And the depth of features has really gotten pretty large over the last couple of years. Unless you need extremely advanced calculations and reporting, Data Studio will probably suit your needs. The ability to sort your data and fine-tune exactly how metrics are displayed is cool. It doesn't hurt that Data Studio is free! These kinds of tools are often very expensive, but Data Studio allows smaller studios like mine to get in the game for little to no investment.

Cons

It's a bit of a pain to get set up, and to fully integrate. The documentation, while large, is not easy to follow in my opinion. Adding a data source and then creating a dashboard using a specific source can be a little hit and miss. It shouldn't take 3 or 4 screens of options to tell my dashboard that I want to get data from a specific source. Once you get past it, it's fine. But setting up a new dashboard, and organizing dashboards, is cumbersome.

### "Data Studio for a Data Engineer"

September 6, 2022

5.0

I currently work in the area of data engineering, and it helps me a lot, we do analyses, we do QA of the applications, the integration with firebase, bigquery and analytics is great, so we can build processes that validate our data, and detect any anomaly in time

Pros

I love the integration with bigquery, as I already mentioned our data warehouse is there, we can build dashboards, reports, corrections, validations in minutes

Cons

it has a limited number of graphs, and deploying it is quite slow, also share it, I would like there to be more possibilities to filter by data

### "Easy to use Data Analysis Application "

April 29, 2023

5.0

Google Looker Studio ( formerly Google Data Studio ) allows my team members to access and create analytical reports and share them with stakeholders and teammates. It helps my team visualize performance reports and run simple ad-hoc analyses. The service enhances our productivity and improves the information workflow internally over the company and externally with our clients.

Pros

Google Looker Studio ( formerly Google Data Studio ) is easy to use and has an intuitive user interface that allows the average user to create and consume reports and dashboards. It integrates seamlessly with google analytics and workspace applications like Sheets, docs, and Google Drive. It facilitates self-service data analysis and business intelligence practices.

Cons

Google Looker Studio ( formerly Google Data Studio ) has a relatively slow performance and limited features regarding data connectors and visualization. Although the paid version has advanced features, it comes at a high cost with more difficulties and barriers to scale.

### "Dashboards for your clients"

July 19, 2022

4.0

We were using custom reporting forms for our client work but struggled with the currentness of data and new colleagues always needed a lesson or two in understanding where to get data from, how to clean it and how to import it. Once we started to setup GDS all these things went away. The initial period was the setup of the connectors and report templates, but after that the invested time payed off well.

Pros

Creating reports can be a task which requires a lot of steps and gathering of data from all sort of sources in different formats. Putting the data together in a way that is understadable for client or basically anyone else is a task where Google Data Studio comes in and does just that. Without any hassle - data gets inside the studio and can be vizualised, cross-referenced and presented to anyone without technical knowledge.

Cons

Sometimes you need a special data from an exotic service which means either going back to basics and side-loading some exported data or writing own connector or buying access to a connector. And the system can get slow.

Alternatives considered

### "Should be your first option when getting started with dashboarding"

Easy dashboard building from multiple sources

Pros

Being fully cloud based embedded within GSuite makes it the best and easiest solution for internal dashboards amongst your team. It's quite valuable not having to break your workflow and manage different logins and makes it super easy to share with a subset or whole of your organization

Cons

There is no support so you are on your own if things are going wrong. The connectors are also much less stable than other tools with frequent I/O problems or times when things are inexplicably broken for hours or days, and you are in the dark since there is no support.

### "A robust, free data visualization suite with more features than you'd expect"

August 19, 2021

4.0

Overall, Google Data Studio has offered a free way to easily manage and organize data in a compelling and easy-to-use manner. While the initial setup can be tedious, Google Data Studio is a great tool for reviewing data.

Pros

Google Data Studio offers a robust set of features and visualization options, all of which come together to form a powerful data visualization platform to accommodate all your needs. With ready-to-use templates and an easy drag & drop system, Google Data Studio makes it easy to link to your data - featuring numerous connections to google apps (like sheets, ads, search console, youtube, bigquery, mysql, etc), third-party apps, and custom connections - if they don't already support the app you are looking for. On top of that, Google Data studio offers numerous types of charts (pivot tables, regular tables, scorecards, graphs of every kind), and further customization with their third-party visualization options. The platform also offers custom formulas for data, allowing you to customize your data on the front-end vs in your database. However the best part of Google Data Studio is the ability to add data controls & filters - giving the ability to add a date selector, or a drop-down list based on a column of data; or even to set each chart individually to pull data from a specific time frame. Overall, Google Data Studio offers many features which compounded together, create a powerful system for data analysis.

Cons

Despite Google Data Studio's prowess, unfortunately it can easily become overwhelming and unwieldy to manage. The learning curve for the program can be quite extreme; especially when you start to dive into custom formulas for data. While custom formulas seem to line up with formulas you might be familiar with in Excel, they don't - some formulas match, while others don't exist, and yet others do different things than their name-sake in excel. Furthermore, creating custom reports can become a time-consuming process - as you try to figure out how to display the data you want, while working around some of the limitations of Google Data Studio. This includes simple things like being able to modify the title of a specific chart - in some charts, this is an easy function; while in others, it is impossible, forcing you to use a custom title. Furthermore, Google Data Studio has a list of pre-defined date ranges (such as "Last Week starting Sunday/Monday, Month To Date, Last Month, Last Year, Last Quarter, This Month, This Year, This Quarter") which operate perfectly - however if none of their predefined options work, you have to figure out their "Advanced" date range system, which can be quite complicated to manage if you are working with a dynamic range (such as wanting to see first quarter data but you are halfway through the second quarter)

### "A Review of Google Data Studio: Simplifying Data Visualization"

January 13, 2023

5.0

Overall, my experience with Google Data Studio has been very positive. The software is easy to use, intuitive and it allows me to create interactive data visualizations with multiple data sources. The drag-and-drop functionality is a plus, it makes it simple to create professional-looking visualizations. I would recommend it to others looking for a powerful data visualization tool.

Pros

For developing interactive data visualizations, I found Google Data Studio to be user-friendly and intuitive. Its ability to link to a number of data sources, such as Google Sheets, Google Analytics, and BigQuery, is among the features I enjoyed most about it. Because of this, building reports and dashboards can be done with a great deal of flexibility and customization. Additionally, it takes relatively little effort to generate professional-looking visualizations because of the drag-and-drop feature of the interface. Overall, I discovered Google Data Studio to be a fantastic tool for anyone wishing to interpret huge data sets and provide insights in a concise and attractive manner.

Cons

I have been using Google Data Studio for some time now, and overall I have found it to be a very powerful and user-friendly tool for creating interactive data visualizations. I have been able to connect multiple data sources and have been able to customize the visualizations as per my requirement. The drag-and-drop functionality makes it very easy to create professional-looking visualizations with minimal effort. The interface is easy to navigate, and the built-in templates are a great starting point for creating new reports and dashboards. While I don't have any major issues with the software, if I had to pick something, it would be that the number of built-in chart types is limited and I would have loved more options to customize my visualizations. But this is not a big issue and overall, I am very satisfied with Google Data Studio and would recommend it to others looking for a powerful data visualization tool.

We wouldn't have grown as fast as we did without the look behind the scenes at our data without Data Studio

Pros

The ability to manipulate the multitude of data provided and present it to clients, customers, staff, and executives is unmatched. The reporting and analytical fields that are covered are second to none and we wouldn't survive as a business without Data Studio.

Cons

### "Industry standard for digital advertising data visualization"

May 26, 2022

5.0

Overall, Data Studio is great: doesn't require extensive technical knowledge, is free, versatile and offers the ability to create real-time dashboard using different data sources - including blended ones - very easily. As an ad agency, it's one of our most used tools.

Pros

There's a reason why most agencies and marketers use Google Data Studio to create dashboards using advertising data: it's fairly powerful, integrates natively with Google's ad stack, offers decent integrations to other ad networks when using a connector (we use Supermetrics), and it's very easy to use. For a free tool, the value just can't be beat.

Cons

Data Studio is not the best overall product in the space, because it lacks the capabilities of more advanced business intelligence tools, it's fairly slow at pulling data from non-Google sources and it's got bugs - such as tables and charts breaking randomly, and then working again after a refresh, but overall is a fairly good tool. Some customization options are also suprisingly limited: for example, there is a strangely limited amount of fonts which can be used in the dashboards.

### "Professionally and easily create online dashboards and interfaces for internal and external use."

May 18, 2022

5.0

To summarize, this was the most cost-effective solution for me because I needed just Google platforms for which to generate reports, and I wanted to save money on a reporting program. If you want additional social or video reporting for a combined reporting platform, it may be more cost effective to purchase a separate reporting product than to pay for Google Data Studio to incorporate that data.

Pros

Google Data Studio's greatest asset is the fact that it is completely free to use. It's a no-brainer to use Google Data Studio if you only need to aggregate and visualize data from numerous Google products and platforms (such as Google Ads, Analytics, Search Console, etc.). You don't have to pay per connection or result for any of these products because they can all connect to Google Data Studio for free.

Cons

As a result of Data Studio's extensive reporting capabilities, the program itself can be difficult for new users to grasp, and the learning curve for reporting is rather high. With the new program, we had to spend a lot of time learning it before we could start using it, which meant that we had one person of our team responsible for reporting.

### "A lot more than analytics "

January 14, 2023

5.0

From using it to show google analytics reports to use it to show even cashflow scenarios.

Pros

Datastudio is an incredibly powerful data analytics tool. It's so much more than just a tool for Google Analytics dashboards: it allows you to quickly create stunning visualizations, set up automated reports and monitor key performance indicators in real-time when connected with simple data sources as google sheets. If I need to analyze complex datasets and share meaningful insights quickly, I use it.

Cons

When it comes to create particular data cards, it is handy to use pre-calculated values. Wich can be tricky!

### "Fantastic tool for both beginners and professionals"

April 26, 2022

5.0

I love how dynamic is the development process of GDS, how many new features are added each month.

Pros

It's the easiest and the most affordable data visualization tool on the market. It's quite easy to learn, just enough to jump in and create your first dashboards in a short time. Despite that, it's used by professionals in many corporate companies to visualize data and create interactive dashboards - so why not use it?

Cons

There are things that are hard to accomplish in Data Studio, like specific types of charts; some of them are confusing, like data blending; and some of them are limited, like free connectors.
