I have been on a cruise ship in the straits of Alaska uploading QBO files to a CPA during tax season with the old desktop version now all they need is an email and password for that function. Cons All of the rapid changes over the years each time you logged on and you would have to relearn each week if you were at a client weekly. I think the rapid price increases are outrageous going from $30 to $60 for a simple 3-user setup in 3 years. This is the key software in our daily monetary transactions for a medium sized medical laser company. Invoicing, billing, inventory and financials are all solved with this program. Pros This software is the heart of our accounting and financial divisions. It is used daily for estimates, invoicing, accounts receivable, and inventory management. The software is easy to navigate and is a great database for all of our financial operations. Cons There are no real cons to this software. It is adequate for financial reporting as well as invoicing customers. I did not like all of the security measures needed to login but I would rather have too many security checks than not enough. I would recommend it either way. Pros The application has been consistently reliable as I haven't encountered any instances of it being unavailable or experiencing downtime, which is a credit to its dependability. Cons Instead of giving a list of specific things that bother me about it, I think the main issue is that it seems like the people who made it never actually used it themselves. Or, if they did use it, they didn't use it very often. Almost nothing in the program is made to help you do the same thing multiple times. When you finish a task that takes a few clicks, they assume you want to go all the way back to the main menu instead of staying where you are. If you have to do two things, you have to go back to where you were before each time. The steps aren't hard, and they look good in the instructions, but when you have to do the same thing over and over again, you start to feel frustrated. May 18, 2021 5.0 Overall QBO is definitely the way to go when setting up the books for a small to medium sized business that does not have complicated inventory demands. I used it as an accountant for my clients linking in as a user to their accounts and my experience was excellent. Their support is very good too as they answer in a chat/telephone or via email in a timely manner. Pros QBO's years of track record for being the premier online accounting system really shows when setting up an account. It is an easy process and very intuitive. I really like the ability to access the bank statements automatically while doing the bank reconciliations (my most favourite feature). Cons The new "receipts" feature needs a bit more tweaking before you can pull me away from using HubDoc as my document manager. It is rather basic at the moment but I have hopes this too will be improved. Reason for choosing QuickBooks Online Due to it's years on the market and it's ease of use. I have no issues with it and find it perfect for all of my use but their customer support is hit or miss. They need to focus on the issues plaguing the system and teach the support techs to be able to properly fix the issues or at minimum be aware of when things will get fixed. All in all QBO is a great solution for small to mid sized businesses needing accounting software. Pros Great Double Entry Accounting software! Online system is really well done and the mobile platform is great! Cons Customer Support is extremely lacking. Yes they train accountants to act as support but when the accountants have issues the support for them is lacking. With Quickbooks keeping the back ups in the cloud I can be anywhere where their is an internet connection to pay bills, collect money or even reconcile my bank account. Cons The one thin that is bothersome is that this software is expensive. But if you want the best you must be prepared to pay for it! Pros Offers all basic accounting and bookkeeping features that small businesses need. My knowledge and feature needs are minimal and the software caters well enough to my needs and knowledge level. The support team is good, and I like that I can give my accountant separate access. Cons Since the new design updates I find it more complex and visually cluttered. The new features and layouts that are supposed to make it better frustrate and confuse me more than anything. I wish I could keep the old layout and don't like that I'm now forced to work with the new layout. I have had the chance to see the process for cutting checks to send to vendors and it appears to be a very solid process as well. My use of the software makes me feel more confident in how to use QuickBooks to organize a business of scale. Pros QuickBooks is a true 21st century solution for bookkeeping. It works as the main database with all of the vendor and customer information for our company. It requires almost no learning for someone who is experienced with computers and software navigation. Probably my favorite feature is the CTRL-F function, which allows you to search within a number of perimeters for whatever you're trying to access in the database, which makes searching for that bill, invoice, or customer a breeze. Cons The user interface is a little odd at first, but does not take much getting used to. Sometimes when creating a large report the program can get bogged down and take a while, however this may just be the office computers we use. Director Construction Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Backup & File Retention Poor" May 23, 2017 3.0 Pros It is a very good product as far as features and layout. Very easy to navigate around the screens in different tabs. It has some basic project costing ability, not great but better than Xero for example. The mobile app is quite good. Cons The BIG worry is the lack of backup of database, lack of long term file retention in the event of closure of the account. As far as backup of data, the ability to download excel spreadsheets is available for most areas. But this needs to be done manually and for at least 7 or more different areas in QBO. So a significant workload for a system that promotes itself as time-saving. Some areas cannot be downloaded in bulk, for example, attached receipts. They can be downloaded one by one but after a year there may be thousands. Why the need to download? Well often a business closes and the account is closed (70% of small businesses close within 12 months) files are only retained for 12 months then deleted by QuickBooks. But the law in most countries requires files to be retained for 7 years for audits etc. Effectively then all paperwork used to enter data into QBO needs to be held for 6 years after closing the QBO account. Isn't the purpose of QBO to go paperless? Other online cloud accounting competitors store the data indefinitely and they say they will reopen a file for you in the future. (probably for a fee) I won't state the particular competitor so it doesn't appear that I am promoting another accounting system. I hope QBO rectify this as it is the only serious issue I have with the product. Review Source KB Keirsten B. August 15, 2019 3.0 We solved the issue of being able to log in from anywhere, however, we did go back to the desktop version for report purposes. Pros It was easy to log in from anywhere and add transactions. It was super easy to take pictures of transactions and upload them into the online platform. QBO does work with Tsheets as well, but not in the way that the desktop is capable. Cons Job costing and certified payroll are not possible with Quickbooks Online. Many of the reports I need to utilize are not available with the online. It would be great for a small home type business, but anything where intricate reports are needed or as stated, certified payroll or prevailing wages, are just not possible with the online version. We ended up going back to Quickbooks Desktop due to the certified payroll and job costing/mapping. Despite the cons noted, above, overall it's a solid product with decent value. Pros I really liked that the software is very user friendly. It is easy to sync with financial accounts to proper bookkeeping. Cons Customer support is not very good. Initial reps on chat seem ill equipped to answer what I felt were straightforward questions. The autofill feature/rules for reviewing transactions is glitchy.
