“Newsdesk is very good, the system is easy to use and helps us to monitor media effectively.”

ProsIt is user-friendly such that it's very easy to setup searches and alerts / newsletters. It has a useful help page that shows us all the Boolean operators so we can finetune our searches. It has a very wide news and publication coverage around the world, which is good when you need to monitor a wide range of issues/news. It's search engine is effective and can search out relevant articles using keywords that we are looking for. I like that there is no limit to the number of articles you can search.
ConsThe system can be costly as you need to pay to search for articles beyond 90 days (and even then there's a limit as to how far back you can search), and if you wish to have many newsletters (above the basic number) to send articles to your users. There's also a limit of 25 max licensed articles that you can send the full text on email.

“LEXISnEXIS”

OverallI love it. It is a great database that makes my life easier.
ProsIt is hard to imagine research without Lexis, this is an essential part of my research and through the many years I have been using it the database continues to improve.
ConsI think that the one element that still needs improvement is the search option between the different parts of lexis.

“LexisNexis Newsdesk review”

OverallI was involved in a project to search for negative news stories for businesses that submitted themselves for an annual award. These were smaller, regional businesses. We used LexisNexis Newsdesk to search for articles related to the businesses. We used multiple negative search terms (e.g., lawsuit, bankruptcy, corrupt, trial) combined with the names of the businesses to try and locate negative articles about the businesses competing for the annual award.
ProsI like how you can search by name of company, then add more search terms (e.g., synonyms for the same topic or phrase, using Boolean operators in parentheses) to make searches more specific. I like how you can filter results by time period. I like how articles are retrieved from various news wires and not just the major outlets (AP, UPI).
ConsOften the same news story is displayed in the results, sometimes with minor updates. This can slow down compiling a bibliography, in that you need to weed out repetitious articles.

“Review for LexisNexis Newsdesk”

OverallI work at a government agency that awards regional businesses every year. LexisNexis Newsdesk is helpful in finding negative articles about dubious goings on within the businesses (e.g., scandals involving pension plans, personnel under investigation for possible crimes). We were able to compile bibliographies of news articles and print out the full text of the articles, then submitted results to the agency that awards the businesses. The agency was then able to evaluate whether the business nominated for the award was truly ethical and worthy of receiving the award.
ProsBeing able to use Boolean operators and limiters, such as date range, to produce more focused results.
ConsSome search results are repeated, with the same article appearing more than once.
