ManageEngine Device Control Plus

## What is ManageEngine Device Control Plus?

ManageEngine Device Control Plus is endpoint security software that manages and restricts USB and peripheral device access to prevent unauthorized data transfers. The platform enables granular policies for removable device interactions with sensitive data. Using a zero-trust approach, it requires trusted device lists, ensuring only pre-authorized devices can connect, even outside the network perimeter. Temporary access with time-based restrictions supports secure third-party device usage. The software offers file access controls, including read-only permissions, file-type and size restrictions, and prevention of file copying from removable media. Real-time monitoring, audit reports, and instant alerts for suspicious activities enhance security and incident response. With dashboards, role-based access controls, and integration with Endpoint Central, ManageEngine Device Control Plus provides a framework to protect against insider threats and data risks.

My overall experience with ManageEngine Device Control Plus has been genuinely positive — it delivers the kind of predictable, low‑friction device governance that makes life easier for an IT admin. Once deployed, the agent is stable, the policies apply cleanly, and the audit trails give you the visibility you need without drowning you in noise. It’s one of those tools that quietly does its job in the background, giving you confidence that USB and peripheral risks are under control while your users continue working without disruption.

Pros

What I liked most about ManageEngine Device Control Plus is how reliably it enforces predictable, granular device control without disrupting users. The lightweight agent, clean audit trails, and precise USB/peripheral restrictions make it a security tool you can deploy confidently and then stop worrying about.

Cons

What I liked least about ManageEngine Device Control Plus is that some of the deeper configuration areas — especially around driver‑level exclusions and custom device templates — can feel a bit buried and require more clicks than they should. The product is powerful, but certain advanced settings aren’t as streamlined or intuitive as the rest of the platform, so there’s a small learning curve before everything feels smooth.

Alternatives considered

[Ivanti Device Control](https://www.capterra.com/p/193239/Device-Control/)

Reasons for choosing ManageEngine Device Control Plus

I chose ManageEngine Device Control Plus over Ivanti Device Control because it delivered the same level of granular USB/peripheral control but with far less operational overhead. Device Control Plus has a lighter, more stable agent, a cleaner policy workflow, and audit logs that are immediately useful without extra tuning. Ivanti is powerful, but it tends to feel heavier and more complex to manage day‑to‑day, whereas Device Control Plus offered a smoother, more predictable experience for both admins and end users.

I have used all of their products so and find most of them easy to use and very helpful. As for Device Control Plus, I like the policy setups and notifications being robust.

Pros

It's easy to set up and implement. Setting up policies to match exactly what you are scoping out is pretty simple as well.

Cons

It does not give you much help when you run into individual agent installation issues. I have learned to just do it manually if it doesn't work out after a day or two.

It's a great piece of kit, we've been trialing it for less than 12 months, so it's free up to a specific amount of devices. The reason is due to not having enough time at current within our small IT department to put together a more specific policy which would impact the business less without causing ourselves a higher amount of work from users requesting access to X, Y and Z. But the software has been easy to use and has so far been great.

Pros

The ability to manage what USB devices we allow to be accessed when inserted into one of our machines. This has stopped users using memory sticks which haven't been checked over by ourselves in IT, to ensure the stick hasn't been given to them from a third party and then plugged into our machines which could affect our network. However with our specific memory sticks, it allows us to be sure what is given out is secure. Also the ability to control what type of device is allowed - microphones, webcams, mice and keyboards etc. This has allowed us to stop users being able to access their mobile phone storage SD cards, however keeping the charging function when plugged in.

Cons

It would have been great to have a list of devices which we could add to the blacklist, prior to making the policy live. This would allow us to allow all specific types of devices except X, Y and Z. Otherwise it needs to be set as block all, and then the user can request for their device to be whitelisted. Or when a device is plugged in, the software then detects that piece of hardware and adds it to the list. Even if it was a default list of many different vendors.
