### "Favorable Review"

October 26, 2020

5.0

My overall experience has been excellent. It has permitted me to continue practicing law.

Pros

First and foremost, it provides me with most of the features I could obtain from Lexis and Westlaw at modest expense. Part of that modest expense is forward commitment. Both Westlaw and Lexis required multi-year contracts. At 81 I prefer month to month. If I can't pay, I can quit. Both Westlaw and Lexis refused to let me end my agreements and sent them out for collection to make their point. Then they refused to extend their services after accelerating and receiving full payment. Second, after a short learning curve I found Casetext really improved my research coverage. I'm still not able to use all Casetext features, but continue to work on it.

Cons

I like least that I can't read early Illinois case law. I am working with the Department of Justice on a foreclosure case in which the IRS and I are co-defendants. Much of Illinois property law has its roots in 19th and early 20th decisions and statutes, and would be really helpful to read and cite. This is not "antiquarian" interest, but the need for solid understanding of evolving law based on common law principles which are the rule of decision in Illinois and the basis of our governing property law statutes. I understand that some of your new features will be available only at extra cost. I understand the business need, but I hope you will "grandfather" early days subscribers over 80 who would like to be able to use them. Additionally, I have trouble with your training sessions because I use Ubuntu Linux, not being able to use (or interested in using) expensive Microsoft.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Saw your ads on line and took a chance. Glad I did.

### "Stop looking, as this is the answer"

April 30, 2021

4.0

Great program and great Value. I load the document into the search bar, and it does an AI search and locates the subject matter I should start with.

Pros

The price is affordable. The program is easy to learn. The artificial intelligence aspect is solid and helps save time. The jurisdictions are easy to identify and narrow. The search results are easy to identify as to the source and type, so you can look at a brief or look at the opinion. The printing of the results lets you select the format for printing. The program is a steal as the price is 20% of the other research engines—great online chat staff.

Cons

No lexis or Westlaw quick cites, so you have to look deeper for them to find them. Not impossible, and the online chat staff will help but still an inconvenience. However, 90% of the time, you don't need them. You continue to realize at this price, and it's worth it.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Too expensive for too many bells and whistles that a small firm doesn't need on a regular day.

### "Casetext is Really Coming Into Its Own"

October 26, 2020

4.0

Very good. There are still some areas that need improvement.

Pros

This is a fantastic, lower-cost alternative to Lexis and Westlaw which also has certain innovative tools of its own that are well worth the time to get to know. In addition, the developers are quite keen to help and to understand practitioners' needs -- indeed, several team members are or were practitioners, apparently.

Cons

Results appear in a pane on the lefthand side of the screen. There are boxes where you can check or uncheck, say, a jurisdiction, or statute set, etc. That all works well. But then, to the right of whatever results have been returned, you will see the number of, for example, cases responsive to your search query. Clicking on that number operates the same as unclicking the box, and not to open up, selectively, those results. That I do not like. Casetext does not need BOTH a box to check or uncheck a source or jurisdiction AND a way to do the same by checking on the number of results returned, and so should make use of the number of results returned to allow the user to open up just those results (and not all others), so to, example, see the lists of all cases returned by the search in the SDNY, or whatever. In addition, some of the cases appear with errors -- albeit rarely. More frequently, a case will not cross-reference or show pagination for a parallel reporter, or can be found in one reporter only, but not the other, parallel produce. Also, sometimes cases will be flagged for negative treatment inaccurately. For example, in one instance it reported that a U.S. Supreme Court case had been superseded by a district court opinion from the Federal Supplement. Obviously, that's not how it works, and the particular Supreme Court case in question remains the key case for guidance on the particular fuzzy topic involved -- here it was a facet of RICO law.

Reason for choosing Casetext

I did not "switch" exactly. I added Casetext and find I rely upon it the most.

### "Casetext is accessible to non-attorneys"

October 26, 2020

5.0

I was a Pro Se litigant and then was forced by the judge to hire an attorney. As litigation has been going on for four years and I've spent over $100K on attorney fees, I needed to do a lot of the work myself to avoid the $400/hour attorney fees. I tried casetext's free trial and then purchased the product and have used it for several years. I estimate that this has saved me $100,000+ in fees. Right now I am using casetext to support a complaint to the State Bar panel &discipline panel related to the misconduct of the unscrupulous attorneys opposing me who make it a practice of concealing information in discovery, misrepresenting the facts, evidence, and court record to the court or meeting ex-parte with the judge to affect the outcome of the proceedings. These are very serious charges, and being able to use casetext to cite specific cases, statutes, and the ABA Standards for imposing lawyer sanctions increases the credibility of my arguments substantially. Here is a link to a 2-minute video I did called "\[SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN\]" on my Youtube channel "\[SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN\]. \[SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN\]

Pros

Parallel search feature helps a lot as my skills in writing Boolean queries are limited. Training about ethical legal research was very good. Customer service people are very responsive and helpful.

Cons

I'd like cite-check to fact-check, but I'm just wishing. I don't know if it's possible to use the cite check program to show when an opposing counsel just recites the elements of a legal doctrine but does not cite any facts that show it is applicable in a given situation. The attorneys do this against me all the time and get away with it. For example, claims preclusion requires fair adjudication of claims, same claims, same parties. I filed a Pro Se quiet title complaint against 10 defendants who had recorded title claims adverse to mine after I was kicked out of the 1st case, (to which only 2 of the 10 defendant s were also parties in the 1st case) because the 2 parties from the 1st case had an ex-parte meeting with the judge & convinced her I had never been a party as an individual, only as a trustee. Nevertheless, the 2nd judge dismissed all my claims unheard because attorneys for all 10 defendants said res judicata applied because I was in privity with myself the trustee of the trust that was closed in 2017.

### "My 3rd year of Casetext "

October 20, 2020

5.0

After a few years of using Casetext I can say it has been wonderful for my firm. Great search capability, great customer service, and most importantly I get what I need quickly and the search results, IMHO, have honestly just been better. I'm very glad I made the switch. It's nice to send a good review as I spent years doing the opposite with other services that could have cared less.

Pros

What I like most is that it works great! At first got involved with Casetext due to the crazy pricing and bundling offered by other services that finally put me off dealing with them. Casetext has exceeded my expectations and honestly is better than the others (the big ones) I've used for the past 32 years. Rather than a drop-off there has been an improvement in level of service. I like the CARA search feature and I feel overall it's just a better product at a fair price.

Cons

There were a few things that need to be worked out when I first bought Casetext but they listened to feedback and made improvements. I'm happy with where it as and hope the price point stays were it is now for while.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Because it was better and less expensive. I think people stick to the other services because it's what they know but they can call me and I'll tell them for a firm like mine I just found something that works. So that's why I chose Casetext.

Price, frustration with the others always buiding in unnecessary, exponential price increases. They were the 800 lbs gorillas of the industry and never felt threatened. Well sorry, but Casetext gives me a better product for a much better price. I was wary initially but after sampling Casetext for a month I was sold on it and have been ever since.

### "Best Value "complete legal research solution" period."

October 20, 2020

5.0

Casetext is the only legal research platform I will use for a long time. I have been a customer since their inception, I had noticed their watermark on some cases people sent me, and once I tried the free trial, I never looked back. Simple, easy to use interface, every case, statute and rule under one inexpensive subscription, and constantly gathering feedback from lawyers who use it, Casetext isn't hiding it's next big feature or functionality reveal in some coding basement vault, they are asking attorneys how CT can be made to work better for users, and how design changes will make lawyer's jobs easier.

Pros

What I like most about Casetext is the price. That statement requires context: What I like most is the LOW price considering I can access every decision statute or rule nationwide for significantly less than half of what it would cost me to get ONLY Illinois decisions, statutes and Court rules on the big 2.

Cons

Although they are adding features that are actually cutting edge, and unavailable on any other research platform, they still lack natural language search and an equivalent feature or functionality to gathering the sheep or unlocking cites to similar cases and issues.

### "Solid option depending...."

October 20, 2020

5.0

I am pleased with the performance.

Pros

Casetext is a solid platform. It is easy to use and provides what you need. I run a criminal practice and I use it all the time. Easy to download pdfs, easy to share pdfs, easy to connect to other cases.

Cons

They started out as a reasonably priced option for small firms but they quickly decided that they should charge like Lexis so up went the price. A single person or two person firm it originally was a great deal ($50 a month or so) but then it went to $80 a month like a Lexis or Westlaw and now it isn't that great of a deal. I would recommend it to other people when it was $50 but now that it is $80, who cares which one you get. The only reason I would recommend would be if you don't like Lexis (they are not a nice company - they will sue you)

Alternatives considered

[Westlaw Edge](https://www.capterra.com/p/197144/Westlaw-Edge/)

Reason for choosing Casetext

Westlaw is another. They have had the industry for so long that they didn't need customer service. Same with Lexis. So when I could call Casetext and speak to a human that really wanted to help me with my situation then I was sold. Westlaw and Lexis do not care about your situation (in my opinion) unless you are paying them a bunch of money - single and less than 5 people and you get no attention at all.

Switched from

[Lexis](https://www.capterra.com/p/196819/Lexis-Advance/)

Lexis as a company is a crappy company. If you are a small business then they do not pay attention to you. Money talks so the decision was made to see if Casetext would pay attention. At first Casetext did so that was nice.

### "A Very fine Research tool at a reasonable rate for the service."

October 26, 2020

4.0

I find that overall, my experience with Casetext is quite good. It has helped me on many of my cases. It is a great service for me at this stage of my professional life. I intend to slow it down a bit. Therefore, the pricing makes Casetext a real deal.

Pros

At first, I found some flaws. When I pointed them out, Casetext reps were right on the matter. They pay attention. I see that there are enhancements constantly added. I used one recently that really worked out on a case. It is a new service, I believe called parallel search. I think I will look into adding it to my subscription. Basically, the entire package is a great buy for the money. I sometimes find the research not on point. I think that is because I use it in plain language. I have also used the CARA segment with some success. It certainly speeds the review of an adversary's brief. I do enjoy the product.

Cons

I think it has certain limitations, i.e., forms and things like that. I should not expect Casetext to provide that for the amount it charges.

### "Fantastic alternative to Westlaw and Lexis"

October 20, 2020

5.0

I love Casetext and find it to be much more helpful than either Westlaw or Lexis.

Pros

The software itself is not bloated and does not include unnecessary features but also allows me to conduct research easily, including reviewing related cases or points of law.

Cons

Sometimes specific case references do not include proper links and I have to search elsewhere for the cases. But this rarely happens and isn't much of an issue.

Switched from

### "Awesome value for a comparable product."

December 10, 2020

5.0

I am a pro se litigant. (please don't shoot me!) I can attest to the accuracy and helpfulness of this service. Casetext has helped me win my case in the federal appeals court and people still do not believe that I am not legally trained nor have a lawyer helping me. Thank you

Pros

I loved CARA AI. It is definitely a feature that stands out from other Legal Research Services. Ease of use was also a plus. The layout was clutter free, but also gives you an option to see more information if you wish to have an information bomb in your face. The information is complete and extensive. The price for the service is easily justified with the value it offers. In addition, Casetext seems to be constantly adding features which is always a welcome effort.

Cons

Sometimes, it could be "clunky". For example, it would sometimes lose the filter you applied to your search results which means you would have to re-do the search again. Not a big deal. I also wished that their database included law articles from law journals or publications.

### "Castext for sole practitioner"

June 29, 2023

4.0

I like Casetext. The AI feature is very good and the general functioning of the search and copying features work well. I am a semi-retired sole practitioner. My practice is confined to representing children as a court-appointed Attorney For the Child in New York State. I do a small number of appeals per year. The best plan Casetext for me is their month-to-month plan with their AI feature for $500/mo. When first signing up for it I mistakenly pressed the wrong button and signed up for a one-year subscription billed monthly, rather than the month-to-month. When I realized the mistake, after only the first month, I made a request to be switched to the plan I had meant to sign up for. Casetext refused to make any accommodation. That someone at Casetext could not see to making a very reasonable, very limited exception for a good cause, on a good faith clerical mistake that was reported immediately, was disappointing, to say the least.

Pros

AI feature is very nice. Case citation feature with quoted sections is good.

Cons

I had some difficulties using the Jurisdiction feature. A work-around link provided by customer support was required.

### "Casetext is Great Value for the Money"

November 2, 2020

5.0

The overall experience has been outstanding. I have already recommended the product a number of times.

Pros

The software is extremely easy to use with a highly intuitive interface. One very reasonable subscription price gives access to all State and Federal opinions I have ever needed. Probably the most useful feature is the ability to upload a pleading, have it reviewed within seconds and return a list of suggested cases to strengthen the argument. It is an outstanding product. While I have only needed support twice (assistance structuring search terms), the response was quick and solved my problem.

Cons

This is not really a complaint. The only thing I would change would be to make the drop down box when selecting text for a citation either partially transparent or outside the margin of the opinion's text so that you can see the remaining text in the paragraph - only a minor inconvenience.

Reason for choosing Casetext

The deciding factors were cost and access to other State and Federal cases.

### "Quick research ability, but need to verify Ohio specific ssyllabuses "

October 20, 2020

5.0

I really like the software because it allows me to research quickly and on point. The Ohio syllabus is a specific issue and affects my research about 10 to 15 percent of the time. I really love Casetext overall.

Pros

The features I liked the most are 1) It is easy to use anywhere. Not only is it quick at the office, but I can use my smartphone, which is quick and convenient for use even it city or right before a hearing. 2) The search usually brings up relevant cases on the first page. Not only that but you can skim through the case quickly because Casetext shows you the searched terms in context and you can view the location in the case of all the key terms without opening the case to read it. This saves some much time which I believe is there best function.

Cons

I am an Ohio practitioner and Casetext does not always includes the syllabus the appellate court states at the beginning of the case. This is a problem because in Ohio the syllabus is the law and main holding of the case. While the Ohio courts are not using syllabuses as much anymore, I still have to review another case software to confirm the syllabus.

### "Best Product Available for a Reasonable Price"

October 26, 2020

Casetext is great for my industry. In employment law, it's constantly changing across the United States, and our organization tries to keep up with those changes and alert clients. CaseText is great to find case law quickly and assess those changes.

Pros

The product is easy to use and affordable. It's search features make it easy to find relatable cases and make sure I am using the most qualified cases law.

Cons

The only thing I would like is to have alerts for when cases are updated or there is a new precedent for certain legal topics.

### "Great Value"

October 20, 2020

5.0

I like it for my normal legal research for federal and state criminal cases, but I also really appreciate that I have access to other states outside of my jurisdiction. And I wasn't charged an arm and a leg like Westlaw prices.

Pros

The value. I've looked at a number of other legal research subscriptions and this was by far the cheapest. But even though it wasn't too expensive it still seems to have most of (if not all) of what Lexis and Westlaw have. I also saw they have a brief bank. I've never used it, but now that I figured out they do, I want to use it.

Cons

I don't have many complaints about the product. I would like more training so that I am using it properly and to its full potential, but that is more on me and not taking the time to fully dig around the website.

### "Comprehensive, Sensible and Affordable"

November 2, 2020

5.0

I've had a great experience overall with Casetext, in terms of quality search results, great pricing and excellent customer service.

Pros

Before Casetext I used Lexxis Nexus and paid astronomical prices for pretty limited access to the critical research I need for my practice. It really made no sense not to switch once I experienced CaseText’s quality in terms of range of access and price. Using Casetext has made a huge difference for me and my practice because I am able to broadly research across all of the areas of litigation that I currently practice in. My favorite feature about Casetext is that it's affordable, and I can pass those savings along to my firm clients.

Cons

There's no downside to switching to Casetext. You find the same cases you'd find on any other search engine, and you can even search cases outside of your primary jurisdiction without having to pay tons more in fees.

### "Great Search Results and Interface"

October 20, 2020

4.0

I needed a service for deep legal research. After obtaining quotes from Westlaw and Lexis, I found Casetext for a fraction of the price without a loss of any substance. It has the bells and whistles on which I rely most heavily for drafting legal briefs and memoranda.

Pros

It has all the cases, and search results come back in a very efficient way, so I can quickly find the case I need. The database highlights the text that other cases have quoted. The customer service has also been excellent when I find a case missing from the database.

Cons

The database has multiple copies of many cases, so that clutters the search results unnecessarily. I also find typos in the cases. Also, Casetext does not allow common boolean search characters to substitute for the words, and it took me a while to figure that out. I wish Casetext had more legacy statutes and regulations, so users could look them up by year.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Casetext is far cheaper than Westlaw or Lexis, but it has a far superior interface to Fastcase. Moreover, contrary to Westlaw and Lexis, Casetext does not limit the search responses.

Very pleased. Compared Casetext to LEXIS and Westlaw (and ROSS) products but still find Casetext delivers the best bang for the buck.

Pros

Cons

Not as robustly for unpublished cases. Dies not use proper citations for NY state courts and does not allow searches limited to discrete intermediate appellate courts (needed in CA and NY(

### "A brilliant alternative to Lexis, Westlaw, or Bloomberg."

November 2, 2020

5.0

Pros

Just as functional as the big names but for a fraction of the cost.

Cons

It's minor (and it may be user error), but I wish I could bring up specific California Code Sections as quickly as I can find them on Bing or Google.

Reason for choosing Casetext

I was very familiar with Westlaw, Lexis, and Bloomberg because we used them all in law school. Once I got out and started practicing on my own, I realized that (1) Google Scholar was just not going to cut it; and (2) the other guys were just way too expensive for a new lawyer just beginning to put a practice together. I somehow stumbled across Casetext and decided to give them a try—and I'm glad I did. Casetext has all of the functionality of the big three, is a fraction of the cost, and the customer service is phenomenal. I constantly recommend Casetext to my contemporaries and I can't speak highly enough about this service.

### "Excellent research service"

October 29, 2020

Excellent.

Pros

It is easy to use, and makes finding relevant case law a relatively quick and painless process.

Cons

I wish it had headnotes similar to Lexis and Westlaw.

Reason for choosing Casetext

I found it much easier and faster to zero in on what I was looking for than either Fastcase or Ross. Westlaw did not make a month to month subscription available (at least, not at a realistic cost), nor did Lexis. Moreover, Although I frankly preferred Lexis, that was mainly because I was used to using it, and the more I use CaseText the more I have come to the opinion that it is either as good as Lexis or close enough so any difference is minimal.

### "Casetext is the Future"

October 20, 2020

5.0

I have been able to dramatically reduce my legal research cost without losing any quality.

Pros

I practice at both the Trial and Appellate levels and perform extensive legal research monthly. I have used both Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis, and Casetext has its competitors' features at a lower price. I have found Casetext's AI feature, CARA, invaluable in performing time-sensitive research, helping me find compelling authority for my briefs and Motions. Casetext also integrates with my case management software to save my search results directly to the case I am researching.

Cons

There is nothing I can say I like the least.

### "Great Value!"

November 3, 2020

4.0

Overall, it is a great service. I have recommended it to all of my friends who are solo practitioners or in small firms.

Pros

Very efficient search engine. Great value for nationwide database.

Cons

I miss having the headnotes that Lexis or Westlaw provide but the Analysis tabs in Casetext are very good. The "similar issue" pop-ups are often very helpful but sometimes are not that relevant.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Casetext has a better search engine and better presentation. The analysis links in Casetext aren't perfect but far better than what is available in Justia or Casemaker

### "Great Alternative to Lexis or Westlaw"

October 29, 2020

5.0

I used replaced Lexis with this when opening my solo practice due to cost concerns. Based on the free trial I believed that Casetext would be comparable to Lexis. The annual cost for this program was 1/12 the cost of my Lexis subscription. It's been worth ever penny.

Pros

I love that the search feature is similar to Lexis, which is what I had used for my entire career of 15 years. It is easy to use, easy to filter results and search terms are highlighted for ease of reference.

Cons

Sometimes I have to play with the natural language search a little more to get the results I am after but it's not so difficult that I would switch programs. I just have to work at it a little more. It would be helpful to have a pay-per-search for public records; I don't use it so often that I would want to pay for the annual subscription but would pay per use because I could pass that on to an individual client.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Casetext was $500/year and Lexis was $500/month. There was no comparison.
