### "Best Communication App for Remote Collaboration "

March 11, 2023

5.0

I am incredibly happy with Zulip. I have been using it as the primary tool for communication with my team and collaborators since the pandemic. I am a huge fan, and strongly recommend it to my colleagues and fellow researchers.

Pros

1\. Message threading using topics, and updating topics post-hoc2. Markdown and latex support3. Free for academic research usage

Cons

Very minor issue, the phone app is good, but a little clunky and less polished than slack, but this does not hinder usability.

For all the advantages listed above. The steam-of-consciousness model of Slack was just terrible. Zulu's message topic threading model and free use for research organizations was a huge advantage.

### "Zulip is great!"

March 9, 2023

5.0

Zulip has been great. It's become such an ingrained part of my workflow that I can't even imagine our project without it!

Pros

My favorite part is the threading system - it's a very a nice way to keep conversations organized.

Cons

My only complaint is that some features are available on Web but not on the Android app, for example linking to messages.

### "Zulip as a tool for research and education"

March 9, 2023

5.0

Zulip as allow us to improve the communication between de members of our organization in synchronous and asynchronous way. Zulip adapts easily to the different interactions between the members.

Pros

Zulip give us an horizontal and virtual space to get in contact all the members of our institute. It allows an easy and decentralized way to create different channels of communication between de members while keeping a complete record of all the communications.

Cons

Perhaps a better integration with web browsers and linux desktop environment, through notifications or a desktop application.

### "First year - slow start but acceptance rising"

March 13, 2023

5.0

It took some time for us to realizse the potential Zulip offers and figure out how to set up the right amount of streams and themes. We are always trying to keep it clean and simple as to keep everyone engaged. Trying to wean everyone from using Email is a task!

Pros

We were specifically looking for a platform that would enable our nearly 100 teammembers to communicate, share resources, plan meetings etc. The challenge was that 80% are not digital natives and needed a tool that was easy to use and intuitive. Zulip offers everything we needed without being overloaded with features that can sometimes distract. Keep it simple is the way to go for us.

Cons

We would love to have an intergrated calender that is easily accessible for all users. Some features are difficult to understand (and therefore not within our reach) without some knowledge of programming. (construct a narrow etc.)

### "Fantastic tool for open-source collaboration"

March 10, 2023

4.0

Easier to keep track of conversations and topics than in email.

Pros

Zulip is a convenient place to have conversations with contributors of our open-source project. Streams and topics help organize content, and search is fast and accurate. Zulip gives us the open forum with message retention that we couldn't have with Slack.

Cons

Sometimes the app crashes or hangs, but a "hard reset" always gets it back up. Another issue is that when you add an attachment from the clipboard to a message and it hasn't finished uploading yet at the time of sending, the attachment doesn't come through. The phone app in particular could use improvement.

Switched from

Slack's free plan is terrible because messages disappear after 90 days or so, which is a huge problem for longer running projects with focus shifting and people leaving and joining.

### "Amazing open-source alternative to Slack"

April 2, 2023

5.0

Pros

As a professor, I've used Zulip for my research group and for running several classes. I'm a longtime Zulip enthusiast, having used it for years as part of the Recurse Center community. I love how the threading model keeps things organized, and the API is extremely well documented and easy to use. It's got tons of handy features like code syntax highlighting and LaTeX rendering. I use the hosted version, but since it's open source and self-hostable, I could always switch to self-hosting and have full control if I wanted, unlike alternatives like Slack. I wouldn't want to use anything but Zulip!

Cons

The Zulip Android app sometimes lags behind in features.

### "A great solution for communication in an academic environment"

March 9, 2023

5.0

For now it is a very convenient alternative to emails and better structured than instant chats clients. We use it in an academic setting usually with organization dedicated to specific research projects.

Pros

The possibility to establish separated organizations. And, within and organization the ability to create streams and topics. The possibility to move topics across streams is very usefull.

Cons

I think that the mobile app requires improvements, especially regarding the handling of multiple organizations.

### "Zulip is fantastic for coordinating within tight remote teams"

May 25, 2023

5.0

Pros

It's very easy to keep track of messages among groups and on key topics, it has support for a lot of useful text features like including math and images in messages, and it just runs smoothly.

Cons

There are a couple quality-of-life addons that I would like to see, such as being able to sort messages by whether they include files, and the ability to pin messages to the top of specific topics. Otherwise, though, it's very feature-complete.

### "Zulip the best alternative to Slack when you don’t have a lot of means"

March 16, 2023

5.0

Very satisfied. Looking forward to discover Zulip’s evolution.

Pros

Zulip’s people are very nice and helpful. They helped my a lot to do the importation from Slack. And answered kindly my questions. This is very much appreciated. Zulip has a lot of great features. Still some need to improve or develop in my opinion but it’s a great and useful tool. Thank you !

Cons

The user interface is a bit too geek. And the iOS app would gain to improve.

### "Zulip allows organized communication on multiple fronts"

March 28, 2023

5.0

Pros

Zulip has strong threading and topic delineation. This is different than many other fora or chat-based services, which plop lots of things into a single window and go. There are two tiers of organization, first stream and then topic. This allows me to rapidly contextualize or pick up different threads. And more importantly, it gives a good topic-based history on topics when new people need to hop in.And it has latex support and code blocks, both of which are very useful.

Cons

Using highly threaded tools requires a bit of upfront familiarization.

Pros

It has good support for Math via LaTeX and good syntax highlighting.Their way of further separating streams into topics makes it easier to pick up on an ongoing conversation. They support OpenSource projects are themselves Open Source.

Cons

The integration with our existing workflow was easy. The only thing that could be improved is the mobile app, that seems to quite slow in sending messages if the network stability is bad.

### "Replacement for Slack"

March 9, 2023

5.0

It has been the best replacement for Slack. Our research group runs on a tight budget, and Slack could no longer work for it intended purposes. I like the slimmed down design and being able to easily connect with my team through desktop or mobile, and the experience is essentially the same.

Pros

Zulip is an excellent messaging platform. It reminds me of a professional discord without all the bells and whistles, which is a good thing. The channel system being able to categorize conversation by topics make searching for crucial conversation easier. Additionally the direct messaging system works miles better than Slack.

Cons

Sometimes files sharing gets wonky, as in it doesn't load or there are errors. I actually didn't know there were video sharing or audio sharing capabilities, but that might be because we use the entry level tier.

Zulip helped us overcome team collaboration & file sharing. Specially since we work with a remote team, Zulip helps us eliminate multiple email threads for simple communication.

Pros

Zulip has a very intuitive & made for team collaboration

Cons

The user interface is good, but they can improve the user experience. Make it easy for teams to go back & forth on the topics, sometimes it becomes very cluttered when working on more than one project.

### "Best platform for teachers to communicate with students"

March 12, 2023

5.0

Pros

I have used Zulip for classes I teach at my university and conferences/workshops as I organized, as well as for scientific collaboration in mathematics. I make it the official mode of communication for each class I teach and I love the fact that it keeps all the messages for each class in one place. Zulip is easy to use, it gives a lot of control, we can write latex into it directly without having to install a package or anything, and the students actually stay civil on this platform as opposed to others I used where things degenerate quickly.

Cons

Zulip has uses two tiers to organize the messages: streams and topics within each stream. I would have liked an extra tier.

### "love it!"

March 9, 2023

fantastic

Pros

zulip is amazing for my research group. We love being able to format LaTeX equations and the stream/topic organization makes it easy to pick up on conversations

Cons

for mobile you can only be signed in on one account at a time and it's a little annoying to switch. Hyperlinking is also slightly clunky in that you have to use the markdown formatting rather than just typing ctrl-k or equivalent. But these are minor points

### "Microcks is using Zulip for is open source community collaboration"

May 30, 2023

5.0

Pros

Great thread and stream management, in a single view you know the message and updates you need to take care of.

Cons

Maybe fewer integration possibilities than some competitors (enterprise products) but it is fine for our usages and we will check some integration using Zulip's API and/or Zappier.

Reason for choosing Zulip

### "Great product for research collaboration and conferences"

March 9, 2023

5.0

Pros

Ease of use, customizability, support of latex out of the box (must have for mathematical discussions).

Cons

Stream/topic distinctionis somewhat artificial and can be limiting. It would be nice to be able to have subtopics, and to be able to pin topics.

Reason for choosing Zulip

For research collaborations I find the experience superior to Discord or Slack. Zulip is much better suited to thoughtful long-term discussions, where you may frequently want to refer back to (and edit!) posts that were made months ago. It doesn't have quite the feel of immediacy that Discord and Slack do, but to me that is a good thing! For mathematicians the seamless integration of markup and latex makes for a much better experience than I have found elsewhere.
