Pros As a linux admin this software is very intuitive, easy to use and importantly lightweight. Some of the alternatives we considered mean't we'd have to run additional VMs or Windows servers in order to facilitate backups. Being a Mac & Linux focused company this was far from ideal for us, being able to run the backups directly from inside ESXi's shell was a far better solution. Cons I don't wish to sound too cliché but there really isn't that much I don't like or feel should be included, the one element if I had to pick anything would be that I feel the logging amount to file could be improved. This is possibly the one area where it's lacking in terms of the amount of data logged and how user understandable it is. Admittedly this is a very minor point especially when in our experience the support team have been excellent when help has been needed. Spent the first week trying to license the software through their non-functioning licensing functionality on their website. Finally (seems to be owner of this one-man shop) \[SENSITIVE CONTENT\] had to finally hand-generate the license key for us. Next week was consumed on their support forum trying to resolve why backups would crash at approximately 30%. Two weeks in and it seemed to be sort of working, but backups were excruciatingly slow at less than 10MB/s. And this is from an SSD to a 225MB/s platter disk. This owner/tech consistently displayed a bad and condescending attitude. For level setting purposes, I’ve been working at the UNIX/Linux shell level for four decades and I make my living leading my company of 30+ years as an Enterprise Applications Architect, leading multi-million dollar technology projects for enterprise clients. After finally getting XSI-Backup working, albeit at a snail’s pace, for about a week, they released a summer promotion to purchase a 4-seat license for only $50 more than what we’d paid for our single seat license. The 4-seat license was also for a higher tier license (more features). Since we’d just purchased our license, we asked that we could purchase the promotion and receive credit for our payment already made. We were flatly refused any consideration at all and were told our sole option was to purchase addition normal priced seats at 3.5 times the final price with the promotion. Pros Affordable Shell scriptable Seemed like a useful solution to backing up critical VMs. Cons Unconscionable customer service and support attitude and conduct. Representative got angry and terminated our license out of hand. Slowww performance Buyer Beware - Buyer Beware - Buyer Beware. This is an individual selling software for critical business infrastructure, while operating with the business acumen and ethics of a 14 year old child. His conduct has certainly caused our company injury. After spending a month on integrating XSI-Backup into our infrastructure, it’s going to take at least that long to source and integrate an alternative solution, costing us countless man hours. Thus in the exercise of our right and for the first time in 7 years we refunded this person's money and cancelled his license. The dispute was artificially generated out of thin air, we do not know the reasons for that to happen though. He doesn't even identify himself properly and hides behind an initial. Overall it has worked fine, although I have run into occasional issues. Each version has been better. Tech support is reasonable, considering I'm in the US and they are in Europe (Spain, I believe). Pros Easy to use - As long as you are comfortable with command line apps, XSIBackup is easy to use Efficient - Built-in deduplication means that storage for backups can be significantly less than the total backups. It also means that multiple copies of backups take up much less space. Status output is useful when monitoring status of job. Email notification at end of job has useful information. Can back up VMs even if powered on. Cons No real logging ability - the status output is good for a person watching, but if you want to write to a log file, it's very hard to parse when trying to determine what went on. Email notification is not sent if the job fails for any reason. Verification of backup storage doesn't always detect underlying issues. Reasons for choosing XSIBackup XSIBackup runs on the ESXi host or most Linux distros, not on Windows. That was important to me. A cut down environment such as a hypervisor can't run a window system.
