Pros Visio is a mature diagramming application and it's got the depth of features to go with it. There are literally thousands of shapes to choose from and a wide variety of templates. It's become easier to use with every new version, with automatic alignment and generating shapes with one click. I can create rough diagrams to represent an idea but I can also make professional quality diagrams when I need to. Cons I struggle with creating diagrams that show progression over time. I have tried to use the layers feature, but it is clumsy and very inefficient. Visio also lacks the basic feature of creating a visual representation based on data. Word and PowerPoint have a SmartArt feature that allow entering text and it automatically generates a model. The model also gets updated in real time when you edit the text. The quality it produces and the precision of measurment, gives you that peace of mind. It's not too difficult to master and you can easily start using it without major training. Pros Visio makes creating diagrams satisfying. It is generally quite easy to use but is packed with a lot of features the more you dig into it. It has helped us create visually appeasing diagrams that don't take long to put together. Visio's template and icon support is another great little feature, which helps add to the visuals and accuracy. Cons Though it's a great tool, it's not the cheapest and sometimes the implementation or 'previews' make it difficult to share files with those who don't have visio. Though you can save files as regular jpegs/PDFs etc. it can sometimes be frustrating to share and edit with those who don't have it. Reason for choosing Visio Though we checked out alternatives, Visio seems to stand out with overall quality. The most frequently used diagrams are sequence diagrams , process flow diagrams, network diagrams and etc. Visio is easy to use and user friendly. Pros Visio is easy to use, it support a variety of different diagrams. It is vell integrated with other Microsoft products, namely office suite. We mostly use it for creating UML diagrams in design phase of our software projects. Cons The only thing we don't like is that it is not included in Office suite and requires additional licenses for users. Another great feature is you can open these files using web-based Visio viewer, hence you do not need to have licensed Visio software to see the workflow diagrams. With all our users educated well on saving things on OneDrive/Sharepoint, this makes it very easy to do so and place them in shared folders for them to be accessed by other individuals. We are currently in a process of mapping out internal processes to be shared with new partners that have entered our business and this makes it effortless for our users, coupled with the fact it integrates with the rest of the Microsoft suite easily. It has made my cross-functional collaborations much easier since I have a good method transfer ideas that other engineering disciplines can also work in before migrating to high level systems (CREO, Mentor, etc). Pros As someone who works in multi-functional engineering teams I find this to be a great collaboration platform. I can take my sensor idea and do some basic "hand" sketch type drawings to really highlight my thoughts and needs to my mechanical engineering colleagues. On the electrical engineering side I can create functional block diagrams describing my needs for the signal pathways and data analysis workflows. I also use this for test apparatus diagrams and mock ups for software user interfaces. Cons If you have no drafting/drawing experience this program can take awhile to get truly comfortable with. I don't find all the menus to be as intuitive as I would like. However, I only notice this if I am away from the software for an extended time period.
