Pros Extensibility through inclusion of external libraries. Intuitive drag-and-drop interface which enables first users to quickly create very basic diagrams. Cons The learning curve for creating more sophisticated diagrams and flow charts is rather steep. Controls sometimes feel clunky compared to offerings from newcomers in the space. Visio can be used for all your diagrams, flowcharts, reports and presentations. It works seamlessly with other Microsoft Office products and the interface is the all-so-familiar Office look, feel, and functionality. Must have for any office/school. :) Pros Visio is not part of the standard suite of Office 365, and so we had to buy a separate license for this. And I must say it is well worth it. Flowcharts are so easy (and fun) to create! Just drag and drop the default shapes and connector tools with the familiar Office ribbon tools and main app window. It works well with other office products (e.g., Word, Publisher, etc) when working/importing/exporting files interchangeably. Cons There are many web-based similar apps that will allow you to create basic flowcharts and diagrams for a limited number of elements (all for free). That can be an alternative to consider. There are also some open source tools that can function the say way (although the caveat is that the UI is horrible compared to Visio). Pros The two best things about Visio are the pre-made templates you can use and the drag and drop nature of it. So quick and easy to get started and continually create and update any and all content you have. It is also part of the Microsoft suite so it is a natural fit within any Microsoft environment. Cons Some of the auto-align and placement features can get a little wonky at times but you as the user can usually override it manually. Also integration is good with other external apps and sites but it can be difficult to work through at times. Pros I have been associated with biomedical research for almost a decade and am yet to find a better flowchart and diagramming software than Microsoft Visio. The dynamic range of alternatives that this software provides is nothing short of magnificent. This software is a perfect fit for drafting complex and elaborate flowchart procedures. To top it all of, it makes the complexity vanish into thin air with its simplified design and aesthetic appeal. Moreover, the pricing of this software is inexpensive, which makes it a viable option for college graduates as well. It is helpful to be able to take the to do list ad get to other apps all in within the Visio App. Cons The predictive technology that creates your automatic "to do" list can sometimes be a bit off and needs to be manually adjusted. It is a great tool to visually display processes that comes with our suite of Microsoft products but it is overly difficult for me to quickly modify or expand an existing document. Pros A wide range of possible templates, shapes, and diagram types come standard out of the box. Templates help you get started quickly so you don't have to reinvent the wheel every time. Wide range of options in terms of shapes and figures so you can draw out many things from network diagrams, organizational charts, process flow charts and even room layouts. Cons Often editing an existing drawing can be cumbersome and difficult. Default shapes can be hard to change and I often find myself just starting from scratch rather than having to try to figure out how to fix a shape that continually defaults. One example of this that causes me issues is trying to play an arrow between two shapes. The program seems to default to want to make a 90 degree arrow every time, even when I am trying to place a straight arrow. Review Source JC Janaina C. Pros I like the ability to visually share information such as workflows, org charts, etc. It is helpful to be able to display information in a way that cannot be done in excel or a bar chart. I like that there are different shapes and connectors to show the difference between items. Cons I often find it hard to move shapes and connectors easily without spending a lot of time trying to get the connectors to line up straight. This could be user error but it would be nice to be able to have a way to let the system know how many levels of hierarchy there are like in WBS pro so then it can automatically build out the shapes. Pros As a project manager, Visio has been a long time favorite tool and even with recent competition from IBM Blueworks, I continue to be a loyal Visio user. The biggest strength for me with Visio is how much flexibility it provides me as a user. I do not feel locked in to any structure and am free to be creative. It is the golden standard for process-mapping. Cons Visio has a learning curve which does seem steeper in light of some of the newer tools. As a seasoned user, this is not an issue, but for creating bench strength in the tool, it can be challenging.
