### "Slechte communicatie"

September 12, 2025

1.0

Cons

weet ik nog niet

### "WISH IT WAS MORE RELIABLE AND ABLE TO ACCESS WITH OTHER BROSWERS"

August 9, 2025

2.0

SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTING. WOULD EXPECT SOMETHING THAT IS MORE SECURE FORM OF EMAIL TO BE ABLE TO BE USED WITH ALL BROWERS NOT JUST FIREFOX

Pros

A NEW SECURE FORM OF EMAIL THAT IS NOW AVAILABLE. ABILITY TO SAFEGUARD IS IMPORTANT IN THIS DAY AND AGE.

Cons

CAN ONLY USE WITH FIREFOX WHICH IS NOT A VERY DEPENDABLE BROWSER TO USE. IT IS ALWAYS CRASHING AND HAVING TO BE RESTARTED TO CONTINUE

### "Expensive, restrictive, poor support"

January 8, 2024

2.0

I have been using Protonmail Business (their highest tier) for about a year. I wanted a reliable e-mail service I could use for my freelance work and a few of my personal websites that did not harvest all of my data. ProtonMail was more expensive than pretty much any other e-mail service, presumably because they force you to buy their password manager, VPN, drive, and calendar solutions. I did not need all of these solutions and never used them, nor did I want super-secure e-mail. Nevertheless, I signed up for a 2-year Business plan because of the good reviews, 15 custom domains, and the unlimited SimpleLogin addresses. The first surprise came when I tried to set up my e-mail client. Turns out that Protonmail does not offer SMTP/IMAP and there is no desktop app either (well, there is but it's in closed beta for ages). Using other clients requires installing and configuring protonmail-bridge (a sort of e-mail proxy). This is an acceptable workaround for PCs, however, it is complicated and often impossible to configure for web servers, in particular virtualized or hosted setups. I tried a few community alternatives to protonmail-bridge but ended up having to restart the services daily because the bridge would randomly crash without any warning or error. Support was next to useless. Taking days or weeks to reply with boilerplate text that had nothing to do with my case. Eventually, I decided to migrate all business-critical mail away from Proton. MXRoute offers unlimited custom domains (and a lot of other cool things Proton does not) for a lifetime price that is equal to a yearly subscription to Proton, so I went with them. I decided to cancel my Proton subscription to avoid being charged for another 2 years. Worst of all was what happened when I tried to cancel: despite having paid for 2 years, as soon as I canceled my subscription, I INSTANTLY and WITHOUT WARNING lost access to all premium features for the remainder of the period (about 1 year). This means that all of the addresses I created for custom domains were deleted (luckily I had already migrated them). It also meant that all of my e-mail clients stopped receiving or sending mail because protonmail-bridge is not available for free-tier... Even Google lets you use the remainder of your subscription when canceling... Even my SimpleLogin aliases are going to be disabled because - get this - since Protonmail bought SimpleLogin and bundled it with their product, aliases are disabled when you downgrade (instead of just restricting your ability to create more like SimpleLogin used to to). I begged support to convert my credit to a SimpleLogin or even a Proton subscription but they refused. My only option is to purchase a significantly more expensive monthly subscription for 5 months (instead of the 9 I had left). Maybe ProtonMail was at some point customer-oriented. But my experience with them has been the opposite: overpriced, restrictive, unfriendly money-grabbers. Which frankly leads me to question their privacy and security claims as well.

Pros

zero-access encryption, unlimited SimpleLogin addresses, custom domains

Cons

\- They force you to purchase their Drive, Calendar, VPN and Password Manager which means even the cheapest plan is very expensive compared to competitors. - There is no desktop app and using other clients requires installing and configuring protonmail-bridge (an e-mail server proxy) - The custom domains are useless because they do not offer SMTP/IMAP servers and protonmail-bridge does not work on any sort of virtualized webserver setup -> understandable because of the E2E encryption. - Their support is slow to reply and usually replies with boilerplate text that is not helpful or relevant. - I deactivated my subscription with 1 year remaining and instantly lost access to \*all\* premium features without any warning.

Reason for choosing Proton Mail

Good reviews, privacy, SimpleLogin aliases

### "My Go-To Choice for Moving Away from Gmail"

September 6, 2023

5.0

A lot of the problem I'm solving has to do with 19 years of wrangling a Gmail inbox until it became a hot mess of unread emails from lists I didn't remember subscribing to. Now that I'm a more mature email consumer, I expect that the new digs at ProtonMail won't get that way. I'm instantly unsubscribing/spam-labeling mass mail that I didn't ask for instead of "letting it ride."ProtonMail has a simpler interface, simply because it has fewer features ... features which I seldom used in Gmail anyway. Sometimes less is more.I'm happy with it. It's not "free" like Gmail and some other offerings, but it's solid, it's simple, it's privacy-centric, and it offers the features I need.

Pros

After nearly two decades using Gmail, I decided to make a change. I had operated a free ProtonMail account for some time, but since I was also using their VPN and password management products, I decided to pull the trigger and upgrade to "Mail Plus" -- unlimited daily messages instead of the weak 150-message limit for a free account, 15Gb of space on their "Drive" storage utility, etc.So far, so good. For about $5 US a month (less if you pay annually or biennially), it's a simple email interface with strong encryption available to protect privacy. It does at least as good a job at catching spam as Gmail, maybe a little better. The paid upgrade comes with one custom domain (if you host your own site you can create MX records and use ProtonMail as the domain catch-all, etc. if you prefer to not just have your host forward stuff).Anyone who's been at the same Gmail address since 2004 likely -- like me -- has an overflowing inbox full of newsletters you may or may not have actually subscribed to or want anymore. I've been selectively -- VERY selectively -- moving subscriptions I want over to ProtonMail and drawing my Gmail inbox down toward the abandonment point.

Cons

My one and only one criticism of ProtonMail is with their "Drive" product. In theory, it works like Google Drive or DropBox -- you can store data there and access it directly from your desktop. Unfortunately, at the moment it only offers a Windows desktop application for doing that, so Mac, ChromeOS, and Linux users (I'm that last niche) are out of luck. When and if they release a Linux app, I'll probably abandon DropBox.

As stated -- after 19 years on Gmail, my inbox was out of control and no amount of wrestling with it really seemed to improve the situation. Also, Google tends to be fairly invasive and, liking my privacy, I wanted to move away from its products

### "Proton mail. Whether the free service or paid service."

October 30, 2023

5.0

From day one, I've never had a problem. As soon as I heard about this company from one of my friends, I started. using it. I have one for business. I have one for personal the. free version of this is more than enough for any user.

Pros

I was thinking of free service. is clean, clear, user friendly, if not more user friendly. Then let's say Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc, etc. Fact that they're in Switzerland and have very strict laws about privacy. Ironically, more strict than the US It is definitely a great email service. to use weather for business or personal.

Cons

I don't have really anything bad to say. I do use their VPN, I love their proton pass. username and password. extensions for the browsers which is free compared to the last pass and everything else., no, I don't have any cons.

### "Excellent product - secure and easy, but not limiting for hardcore users"

March 28, 2024

5.0

I am delighted since I started using ProtonMail: the migration has been easy, although it took some time (but this is 100% due to a personal choice to rewrite almost from scratch my email setup and usage), and it simply worked out of the box. Not many bugs encountered as of now, no spam, no deliverability issues. The interface is clean and good looking, and it's a pleasure to work with. The help documents and guides are tailored more to the average user, and makes setting it up a breeze. I'm really satisfied and just subscribed for two years.

Pros

ProtonMail does a great job of keeping email simple (as much as every other email provider you may have experience with) but at the same time with a lot of powerful tools, likeHTML signatures, SIEVE filters, email aliases, many security options (E2E encryption by default, but also Sentinel and session management), trackers blocking, and a privacy-by-default and privacy-by-design policy (some of these are premium features for paying customers).

Cons

The only gripe I have with the Proton ecosystem is that its development is VERY slow, and announced features might take years before release. This is well known and, for me, perfectly acceptable in the end: security, privacy and releasing working features takes time, especially when you are supporting many platforms. Unfortunately there is not much feature parity among platforms.

### "Protonmail arbitrarily auto-bans paid and free users with SPAM BOTS"

September 28, 2021

3.0

Basically, I can NO LONGER USE MY PAID OR FREE Protonmail accounts for normal correspondence, because (1) it isn't really private and (2) they shut you off if you send THREE emails or receive THREE emails that their BOTS don't like. And if you complain, they falsely accuse you of bulk mail and punish you by shutting you off again! Overall, while the "Old Protonmail" was useable in Windows XP Pro SP3 for several years, I tried repeatedly to sign up for their "free VPN". Had no success downloading their software for this, it always landed "corrupted". Moreover, there was a "catch". You had to access their VPN dash board from Windows 7 to set p your VPN for Windows XP! Forget it! Then there was their software for downloading your own emails to back them up. THAT never worked, either, despite several attempts. Basically, Protonmail is an expensive waste of time, and it would be nice if new competitors entered the market.

Pros

Not much any more. I liked the "Old Protonmail". Relaxing colors. Accustomed to the menus. And it had a better, easier-to-use folder creation function.

Cons

I pay protonmail $150 USD a year for two accounts, and I have a couple of free accounts as well. This is to wake you all up out there who think that Protonmail is PRIVATE. It is not private. They now have BOTS that read your incoming and outgoing email and SHUT YOU OFF for nothing, arbitrarily banning you from using your own account, alleging "bulk mail" when there is NO BULK MAIL happening. On 24 Sept 2021, I sent a total of 3 emails, 2 to a bishop in Canada, 1 to a show-host about an interview he had done with a lawyer. The next day, on 25 Sept 2021, I RECEIVED 3 autoresponders from another show because I had used the FORM at their own web site to send them comments on their show and links to information related to their show. PROTONMAIL SHUT DOWN MY ACCOUNT AND BANNED ME on 25 September alleging "bulk mail" for 3 incoming autoresponders that day and 3 outgoing emails the previous day. Then, when I complained about this outrageous abuse, they accused me of sending "BULK MAIL" and BANNED me again for 48 hours more immediately after I had sent one REPLY email to an incoming email. That's all it took. Nothing more than that to be BANNED arbitrarily by these little commie pea brains who use BOTS to read your mail, shut you down for nothing, and then allege "bulk mail". The shut-off described above was in a free account. But they shut me off also using bots and for no reason, meaning also arbitrary, in a PAID account at $75 USD a year a couple of weeks ago.

### "A weird ProtonMail policy"

April 22, 2021

2.0

Until they blocked my email account because of a non-payment to the irrelevant VPN service I was very happy. The VPN is OK, having a secure core, not many servers as others but it's quite fast. My advice is - if you look for a VPN to check NordVPN, ExpessVPN, and ProtonVPN - they are all good. But IF you chose PROTON, make an account for VPN only and do not keep your important emails there because they are desorganized with accounts and better keep your mail separate from VPN in this case.

Pros

End-to-end encryption. Easy to use interface with search feature working fast. You can send encrypted email even to Gmail or any other provider, but encrypting the contents with a password - and the recipient can open it in a browser. He can also reply in encrypted mode even without having a protonmail account. In paid plans, you can also add your company's logo and seamlessly integrate encrypted proton technology. They also offer the ProtonVPN service, unlimited that is the only one offering no-limit VPN up to today (April 2021). The customer service is fast, very polite, and educated.

Cons

1\. To make an account for ProtonVPN, you must first create an account for ProtonMail. Up to this - it's Okay. You may use both plans for free for years, and nobody will push you to move to a paid plan. BUT IF you move to a paid VPN service and for any reason, your card fails to renew the VPN, THEN they are ALSO blocking the INBOX to your email account until you pay for the VPN. I mean, they could stop the VPN or move you to a free plan, but to block email because you didn't pay the VPN... it's weird. 2. During registration, they push to put a credit card on the grounds to avoid spam. But there are other ways to prevent bots from making accounts. 3. do not encrypt subject lines but only the content of the email. 4. Subscription is relatively expensive compared to other providers. 5. Generally, communication with the support team is by Zendesk - an independent company. What about encryption here?

### "Encrypted email without ads"

August 28, 2023

5.0

ProtonMail prioritizes privacy, has a sleek UI and valuable features like schedule send. The added VPN service further strengthens security and value of the service. The free tier has enough features to be a valuable service.

Pros

ProtonMail includes a VPN service for enhanced privacy, online drive, calendar and a password manager with mail aliases to hide your email from unwanted emails. The email service has enhanced security and encryption with a schedule send feature very useful for drafting and sending messages later

Cons

No notable drawbacks until now, the pricing tier could have a lower entry paid plan.

### "The most lovable email provider available!"

October 23, 2022

5.0

My experience has been 100% positive, I integrated my proton account with my custom domain and use it as my business email platform as well as for my personal emails.

Pros

Let me start by stating that I LOVE their clean smooth themes, I love the full featured message composer, I love the updated mobile app they released this summer, I love that I get absolutely NO SPAM, as well as no "promotional emails" There's tracker blocking built in, and best of all, Proton's stance is anti big tech! I love their generous storage allocation (15 GB) plus, every year they add an additional GB for free!

Cons

The only thing I wish was improved is the loading time when I open an email in the mobile app. Otherwise it's as close to perfect as any software service can get!

### "Mail service providing a high level of security "

November 1, 2022

5.0

During the time I have used Protomail it has provided a very secure and reliable encrypted service. Also, it offers mobile apps for iOS and Android that provide functionality. This solution offers high reliability.

Pros

ProtonMail provides a high level of security that makes it an attractive option. It offers an encrypted email account that you can use with the utmost confidence. In addition, it has a very nice interface that is very easy to use. Sent emails are automatically deleted after a set period of time. Additionally, you can include links to larger files stored elsewhere in the cloud storage.

Cons

It is a good email service, the only thing I would like to see improved is the password management for logging in.

### "Best looking UI for safer emailing"

July 17, 2023

Perfect for scheduling emails and safer

Pros

Proton Mail has one of the best looking and easy to use UI. It comes with the Schedule send feature which allows me to draft and send messages later. This has proven critical feature that I often use in my daily emailing tasks. It allows me to stay in my communication schedules even when i am traveling.

Cons

The email storage is limiting to 500mb. I am not yet at the point of upgrading but still i feel this storage should have been bigger. Often i have to delete some conversations.

### "Review of ProtonMail"

July 28, 2022

4.0

I have a lot of fun using ProtonMail. Adopting it was simple and natural. With the benefits of encryption, all of its features are on par with or better than those of its rivals. I value how the business communicates its mission and sense of corporate responsibility.

Pros

ProtonMail makes the claim that it is more concerned with privacy and only retains the functionally essential logs. Since the shift, I've found that the advertising have become less relevant to the items I would want, demonstrating the seriousness with which they take privacy. Your official and private communications are well-secured using this technology. It offers a high degree of privacy. No advertising are displayed.

Cons

The free version offers a tiny amount of storage. UI appears to be a little antiquated. lacks contemporary email features. The expression "if you lose it, you lose your access is one recovery technique.

### "Would definitely recommend"

June 4, 2023

5.0

I love that its safe, my previous email provider (yahoo) said they will now be reading all of my emails which I disagree with so I like that I dont have to worry about that with proton

Pros

I love that proton mail is private and secure. There was a feature that eaily copied my folders and emails over from most recent ones sent (last 3 months) This was good as saved me some time.

Cons

Unfortunately after your folders are copied over, emails are not then automatically sent to your new address (which would be nice) you still then have to go to that company and change your email address with each and every one of them, which is standard procedure but a lot of work when you get as much emails as I do.

Protonmail is for privacy concerned people. If anyone who wants their professional data to be secure they could opt for this service. It doesn't have more features like Gmail and outlook.

Pros

Protonmail provides secure conversation with emails by providing end to end encryption. No one can read mails other than sender and receiver. It also provides VPN service for paid subscriptions. We can use email service without paid subscription.

Cons

Protonmail has very high paid subscription plans. The users interface also little confusing. It doesn't provide considerable cloud storage. It has less integration with other services like drive and outlook.

### "Useful and secure that comes with a price"

November 16, 2020

5.0

I think its a great, secure tool. But very hard to use for non technical people. Love the VPN functionality, and the new storage.

Pros

I love Protonmail. It is secure, I was an early user (due to having many geeky friends, who recommended it), but am hopelessly overburdened by the tech side of it. They have recently expanded by adding storage to protonmail, which was long needed. Their customer service that used to take ages is getting a bit faster as well.

Cons

I know it can do a lot, but if you're not a techie, you won't use a fraction of what is possible with the paid version- and that includes VPN, Proton bridge, etc. So if I want any changes to my account, email redirects or whatever else, I have to ask friends or my assistant to change it. Which- in case a protonmail admin has to fix something, can take weeks. It would be AWESOME if you had video tutorials for different needs!

La función de PGP, Pretty Good Privacy, usando clave pública y privada en los correos para asegurarte de que solo tú y el destinatario leeis el correo, me parece totalmente básico para el correo. I love ProtonMail's default domain name options and the ultra-simple, clean interface of the app and web version. It's great to know that my work emails are secure from the start without having to dig deep into the account settings. I love having zero spam in my work inbox.

Cons

The search functionality could be improved, as I have trouble finding past emails based on keywords, whereas this is not a problem with Gmail.

When I was starting out as a freelancer, it was very important for me to separate my personal email (Gmail) from my work email so that I could tell at a glance whether I needed to check it right away simply by looking at the notification icon on my phone's lock screen. ProtonMail has been perfect for this.
