Corporate Document Engineer and Accessibility Specialist E-Learning Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Lots of technical issues (that lead to crashes) and very poor performance" June 13, 2025 1.0 If someone needs a software for a short recording and minimal editing, then Camtasia might be right. But as soon as the recordings get a bit longer and the editing a bit more extensive (I'm still only talking about a 5 minute video), then you will see all the technical issues. Pros Their mouse tracking feature is good. The cursor can be edited even after the recording, which is the only reason I still use Camtasia sometimes. Cons I had issues so far, where I would extend a frame and the software would simply crash. This got to the point that when I reopened my project and clicked on the snipped with the extended frame, the software would crash again, basically making me lose my project as it's not editable anymore. Once that was fixed (took more than 1 year), the next crashes happened when trying to add clip speed to a clip. Then sometimes the software just crashes randomly without any note or any reason (not reproducible). Oh, and one of the worst things I experienced so far is, that in one of my Camtasia recordings, my voice kept recording but the screen simply stopped recording. Unfortunately I only figured that out after the recording was done and I watched it. You could see the mouse make all the movements, but the screen was always the same. So again, another project lost. The editing performance is also quite bad. When doing a lot of cuts in one project, Camtasia will get so slow, to the point where you often have to wait 10 seconds after performing another cut until Camtasia is ready to perform the next step. With all these issues, editing my projects took 2-3x more time compared to a proper editing software like Premiere Pro. Camtasia always wants to blame the PC hardware of the user but when I edit my project in Premiere Pro, everything is super fast. Review Source MD Mark D. When I used to build software simulations, I would do the filming with Camtasia, even though I used high-end software like Articulate Storyline and Adobe Captivate. Je recherchai un logiciel de montage convivial et après avoir essayé un certain nombre de logiciels gratuits, j'ai opté pour un achat. Camtasia m'a séduit pour sa convivialité, son ergonomie et se prise en main assez intuitive malgré mon inexpérience relative en montage vidéo. Quel bonheur de pouvoir combiner facilement film, images, textes et sons en quelques clics, de pouvoir redimensionner même la musique en tirant des poignées, d'inverser une vidéo prise par un smartphone, de remonter le son d'un objet, d'apporter des animations, etc. L'on peut se perfectionner aisément avec l'aide des tutoriels. J'ai eu recours au support pour un problème de mise à jour sur Windows 11 qui a rapidement répondu à ma problématique. Je ne regrette mon mini-investissement financier. Die Bedienung ist recht intuitiv und kann innerhalb von 2 Stunden erlernt werden. Danach kann man schon brauchbare Schulungsfilme aufnehmen. Cons Ist sehr oberflächenorientiert. Daher kann eine einmal gemachte Aufzeichnung nicht einfach automatisiert aktualisiert werden. I'm able to capture in 1080p resolution, and the end results are always as expected. It's easy to export in the file types I prefer. Pros Camtasia offers me a very effective and convenient way to screen record, capturing both the on-screen visuals as well as computer-audio and microphone audio should I so choose. It also has nice post-production functionality, like smoothing and enlarging the mouse icon. Cons Camtasia asks me to upgrade to the newest version every time I log in, but my license does not include updates. It is only good for the older version. I'd have to pay to update. It is very easy to start using it if you don't know anything about video editing but a miriad of additional featureas and options will make it easy. Due to its nature it might work slower on waker machines so it may take time between you click on record and it starts recording but you will always know when it does so there is no chance of recording or cutting your recording earlier. Editing is quite easy although applying smooth transitions between cuts with some efects takes some practice. Pros Ease of use but losts of advanced settings for more experienced users. Can caputer the screen and your camera/audio at the same time. Lots of customizations, including capturing a piece of screen, video effects (e.g. blurring sensitive data) as well as easy editing. Great effect with little effort. Cons It needs lots of resources on the machine, even for a video editing software. Additionally, rendering will take some time on a regular laptop. Software is not backward compatible. Projects created in versions before 2020 (\*.camproj) will not open with newer versions. We've used it to capture training content, edit training content, create training content, etc. Screen captures, live capture of instructor video, accompanying or standalone animated storytelling via graphics and text. It's been great. Pros Camtasia is easy to use, doesn't require a subscription, has good built-in animations and transitions, and does screen capture as well! It's a great tool that covers a lot of bases in the world of video creation/editing. Has excellent performance for the most part as well. Cons I've always wished the media bin was a resizable pane. I've worked around it by using structured file naming conventions for my media assets (of which I typically have a lot, since I mostly use Camtasia these days for video creation with text and graphics). Great product if you're doing screen capture videos, and the editor interface is intuitive. Customer service is good. Fair warning on the mobile Capture app, but that's more of a nice to have than an essential feature, and other than that this is a fantastic product that's very reasonably priced. Pros It's easy to use, and it does a great job of all the basic things you need it to do. Cons The only quibble I have at all is that the mobile app (Capture) is buggy. When it works it's super useful, but it frequently doesn't work for me, which has caused me major heartache at times. It's gotten to the point where I no longer use it, as I can't afford to lose work. The downside of this is that, while I can use my iPhone's native screen recording feature, 1) that has its own bugs, namely that if I record for longer than a few minutes it'll freeze, and 2) it doesn't record sound. The only reason the sound recording aspect of Capture is useful to me when the app is working is that it allows me to visually sync my desktop and mobile Capture tracks. Basically, when I'm including mobile content in a video, it's usually overlaid on top of a desktop background. I use a condenser mic to capture high quality audio, so I don't even use the audio from the Capture app in the finished product, but it's useful to have, because I can separate the audio and video from the Capture track and visually line up the audio with the audio from my condenser mic. Pros Well, I started the use of Camtasia about ten years ago and I was astonished how easy was to learn the use of. Besides, upon a few clicks anything were set just out of the box and I could create my first course about video-editing. It's a great software to create a video from a high quality screen capture. Cons The price it's the mayor con! If you can afford it and the updates then the cost value the quality. The second con is that you need a lot of memory to get a smooth work. If do you have 32 GB RAM can work fine without problem. No other con from my experience. It’s very easy to create another similar video, using templates, video placeholders or simply copy-paste an existing project and replace existing media with a new one. It is less feature-rich than Adobe Premiere, but you can’t beat its simplicity. Also, TechSmith delivers amazing support tutorials to help you learn how to use the platform. Pros Camtasia is very easy to use and has enough features to make your video looks professional. Has templates and video placeholders that are very useful when you create similar videos. It has quite a few video effects. It has auto sound normalizer and noise reduction (is not perfect, but it helps). Camtasia comes with a Screen Recorder that is integrated with the editor. After recording, you have the option to auto create a Camtasia project and add the recorded video to it. Can capture mouse and you can edit it later (like size or hide it). Camtasia also smooth the mouse movements. You can explain better some topics using text overlay (very easy to create, extend, or add effects). Supports green screen. It’s easy to import video and photos created in other application. You can post videos directly to YouTube from within the application. Cons Sometimes I need to be exact when cutting and splicing a video or audio and I miss one or two steps of zooming-out the media. The software was freezing on a laptop without a graphics card (rarely). Camtasia doesn’t have the possibility to change the editing speed. But I managed to do it using a workaround: changing the media speed and before exporting don’t forget to change it back to normal. For a long video, rendering takes a lot. Audio processing is a bit limited (for more control you should use another tool like Audacity) If you hear that Camtasia can import PowerPoint slides, don’t be too enthusiast about that, it will import them as photos only.
