Founder Professional Training & Coaching Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Camtasia a once solid performer has really gone downhills" December 16, 2021 1.0 I use to consider Camtasia to be rock solid and then several months ago I bought an update to a newer version. It has been a nightmare for me ever since. I have or had support but they are always gone and it is very difficult to submit a support ticket. Even then, I waited several days for them to return to work and all they did was find the same pdf I had already located which did not resolve my issue and close my ticket. It was all a complete waste of my time and money. The software crashes constantly now and I lose work with no end in sight. The updates never seem to improve anything anymore. They just seem to introduce more and worse crashing and lack of reliability. I don't feel the company is committed to this solution any longer. They just try to keep it out of the ditches and that is all. Pros It is fairly easy to schedule a recording although the constant updates lose your settings each time. The output files as an MP4 are convenient to view although you have to fix settings every time you go to render. Basic editing can be quick and easy but it can also get less than desirable results. Cons Support is unreliable for the product. Very limited hours and all they do is find what you can find yourself. Updates are very obtrusive with this software. They tend to crash and I have to completely uninstall and reinstall the software to get it up and going. Updates are short-lived. I apply updates to resolve feature issues and a couple of weeks later it is in trouble again and needs more maintenance. Review Source DC Douglas C. It has been a great resource to have when editing all my videos and creating new videos. It has great features, and is really to use from an user point of view. It also is very easy to train on and learn. Definitely a great alternative to IMovie. Pros I like the ease of use and drag and drop features the most on Camtasia. When I am editing or creating a video I usually add multiple clips together, and the drag and drop feature allows my video clip to fall into place right where I need it. The drag and drop feature is also great for text overlays or transitions and makes it much easier to edit videos and place your video/picture clips at the exact place it needs to be. Furthermore, the video editing features are great, and can definitely be a good windows alternative of IMovie. Cons There is a limited selection of transitions, text overlays to choose from compared with other video editing softwares. Although I use the same text overlay feature every time, it would be good if there was more/more unique options when editing your video. Also when editing your video, sometimes it is hard to cut the few seconds and sometimes milliseconds out to create a perfect video. It was a struggle because I was new to learning tools like this. I have used others, but remained with Camtasia. When updated versions came out they did not interrupt my ability to work or cause problems as updates can sometimes do. The tutorials make learning easy as they are clear and concise. And there are many of them! Pros Ease of use always!!! Even if I don’t use it for awhile when I return to using it there’s no huge learning barrier to become reacquainted. Second would be price. Cons Camtasia focuses more on the video editing and ignores the screen recording aspect in the process, the addition of too many unused features in my opinion also makes the program resource hungry and my older computers cannot run it effectively. I am always recommending Camtasia to my clients who want to do little DIY video projects - and have converted them to users/followers as well. Tech support is always very helpful and the tutorial videos they provide - along with live webinars - are very helpful. Pros The visual interface is (in our opinion) the best feature. Techsmith keeps adding more features that make it eas(ier) to produce professional-quality videos for my clients in a short amount of time. I especially enjoy the ability to create Client Libraries (frequently used tools, fonts, effects, music, assets, etc.) as this helps build consistence between clients & projects. Cons Transitions are a bit frustrating for my types of projects. They have added many new effects and transitions to their latest release (which are all very cool). Its ease of use allows you to obtain quality results without being an expert in the area of video editing. It includes the screenshot tool which works perfectly. The cost-benefit ratio seems very good to me. I definitely recommend it. Pros It is a very easy program to use, but at the same time, it is full of tools that make your work easier and allow you to obtain very good results. Among its best features are: - Easy to edit videos, take part of them, make cuts, speed up or slow down and manage layers - You can easily add shapes, arrows, texts and graphic elements, and it is very easy to define their duration and position in the video. - Its screenshot tool is great, it has the correct and enough options, it allows to capture the screen and the webcam at the same time and edit them in separate channels. - It has audio effects, few but functional and well selected, noise reduction, fade in and fade out. No more is needed. - Video pan and zoom tools are easy to use. - The export is simple and different profiles can be handled. - It has subtitle function - Easily separate the sound from the video and you can easily control the volume - Video documentation is very good Cons What I think can be improved is really little. - The program takes a while to start, but once opened, it works smoothly even if you don't have a large computer, in my case, with 8 GB of ram I can use it correctly. - Some things are missing customization options, but you rarely miss them - The templates and elements that are included are limited, if you want more they have a cost that seems high to me if you have already paid for the software. - It seems to me that it lacks an autosave option, I have already had to lose a few hours of work due to a power failure. Camtasia has improved a lot and it replaced my video editing software. I use to make tutorials for my clients and this helps me create them in a professional way and make adjustments super quick. I have a maintenance contract that may require more training from their agents. I had to explain a problem 3 times to finally have someone to watch over me. I was treated like a regular joe when I am paying a support contract. The third guy really replied and followed me up. The first 2 guys didn't even care much. Easy to use, fast to edit videos, very comfortable to work with Cons Some details like the fonts outlines that end up as little boxes around each letter and some features that should work better like the templates to have all the fonts and colors on the whole project... well that doesn't work. I never expected it to exceed my expectations but it did so now I can add it to my arsenal of screen recording software. Pros It was very easy to learn, the user interface has a very high-end feel to it and the overall functionality of Camtasia was surprisingly awesome. In all of my years using screen-casting software, this turned out to be one of the most pleasant to use, a lot of people who have used Camtasia can attest to that. Cons I personally don't have any gripes with Camtasia, but if I had to nitpick an issue I'd say that the trial version comes with a watermark so whatever project you're doing with it, the watermark will always be there reminding you that you're using a free copy. It's way more powerful than people might expect, I know quite a bit about Camtasia but I totally admit there are more some features I haven't learned yet how to use but I know they exist and when I need them I know they will be there. TechSmith is also a really great company to work with, they really care about their products and making them better. Pros 1) The hot spot feature, it's something other tools just don't have. 2) Camtasia has pre-built features that other tools don't have, you can just do things much faster in Camtasia than what it takes me to do in Premiere and Final Cut. 3) TechSmith has made a lot of smart decisions by creating a video editor that most people can learn how to use in a short amount of time. Albeit that Camtasia is not the most advanced video editing platform but it doesn't have to be, it's perfect for the average person who needs to do some video editing. This is why I love Camtasia, I can ramp up new video editors quickly. Even my advanced video editor now sings the praises of Camtasia, he complained at first but now even he sees the light. Cons We have pushed Camtasia to where it breaks with too many layers, yes I know the workarounds but this could be improved upon. It's a fantastic tool for people who don't have a lot of experience editing video -- and for companies who don't have the budget to hire a professional to create the kinds of high quality demos and videos they need. The media library makes it easy to import all the files you want and then drag and drop them wherever you want them to appear in the stream. It's very easy to cut segments and move them around, and with one click you can separate audio from video, letting you easily replace native audio with a separately recorded file and align it with the video wherever you want it to go. If you mark up screen recordings, use Camtasia. You'll save minutes to hours on every single video you create. Pros Camtasia wins for several reasons. They make it easy to capture screen recordings, easy to script and record VO, and provide great standard annotation tools. Other video editing tools like Premier or Video Studio don't offer annotation/markup options out of the box. This one feature has made Camtasia worth the ticket price. Cons The software seems to lock up and crash periodically. This is frustrating and I likely would have left...but the annotation and recording tools are so amazing that they outweigh this problem. May 13, 2022 5.0 I have used it for a long time, I have been using it for more than 3 years, and after gaining experience with the video editing method and taking the basics, I began to dig deeper into more professional software. Pros Camtasia is the first program I have used in my life to edit my videos, had it not been for the use of this program in the beginning, I would not have been able to use more professional programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. I've used it for a long time and through it I've moved on and digging into other programs, and I admit it's an excellent program and a lot of people have gotten started with it. I used it for two things, the first is to edit my videos, and the second is to record my screen It is a very easy-to-use feature, the user interface is very simple, it has a lot of ready-made transitions between videos, as well as special transitions for texts, and also photo animations, you can put video subtitles, add graphic shapes and arrows, there are some sound effects that you can use very quickly In processing files and exporting videos. Camtasia targets the novice user in this field, because you can create simple videos of very high quality. Content Creator Education Management Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Best Video Editor for People in Beginners - Intermediate stage" March 13, 2022 5.0 Pros Ease of use - after (of course) going through a few tutorials you can see the power of Camtasia while using it for editing videos. I have been using it for more than 5 years now for creating videos (for my YouTube channel). Often, I get asked which video tool I use after seeing my work. Camtasia is not that expensive if you see the value it brings in terms of quality editing. Of course, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles like the Adobe family of tools but it does its job really well. It's capacity to create 'favorites' on any custom animation I create, specific graphics, tools within Camtasia - is a game changer. I only have to go to my 'Favorites' folder within Camtasia because I put all my frequently used tools in there, which speeds up my video editing / creation process. Another pro is its ability to connect my mobile from within Camtasia. This helps me in transferring my photos and videos to directly into the editor. Cons Not a con, but sometimes, the rendering takes a while to complete, especially for longer videos. I know my system config plays a critical role here but I somehow feel some magic solution can help in speeding up the rendering process. Another minor annoyance I have is that sometimes (I mean quite rarely) it crashes while working. I believe, it should never crash since my video editing is critical to my nature of work. Teacher E-Learning Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Camtasia is why I can do what I do" April 17, 2024 5.0 Overall, I’ve had a great experience with Camtasia. I’ve used it for YouTube, for my teaching and making training and demonstration videos for other contracts I’ve had. Pros The ability to edit video was a total game-changer. Otherwise, I may as well just post videos recorded with a phone camera. It allows my videos to be infinitely better than they would be otherwise. The timeline-style editing is great and I now think in those terms when recording. Cons The 2023 version is not as stable as the old version I had. The old version NEVER crashed (okay, maybe once in five years). 2023… has been known to choke when I try to use and edit large recordings. Have also had some problems with the license key sometimes just… going away and the system not accepting my license key when I re-enter it. Extremely annoying. I’ve had the new version since Nov. and this problem happens about every two months so far. Reason for choosing Camtasia I took a course on video editing for teachers and Camtasia is the software they used and required. Review Source SM Seth M. I needed a powerful video screen recording software for walkthroughs and demonstrations. It's so easy to create video recordings of my desktop and import them into whatever format I need (youtube, storyline, LMS, etc.) Pros Camtasia was my first choice when purchasing video screen capturing software when I first arrived at my job. It's so easy to get up and running. From easily sizing the capture size to drag and drop editing. It's the best around. I love the extensive export options as well. Cons My least favorite part of this software is the split between Camtasia and Camtasia Recorder. I don't love toggling between the two apps. Reason for choosing Camtasia The price point and ease of use was the selling point. My purchasing department loved the one time fee. Once I showed them what was possible with the software (I used the trial version for a demonstration), there was really no question in their minds about the importance of this software to the success of our online trainings.
