They're either overly complicated (too feature-rich) or too expensive. Some are too simplistic. Camtasia continues to be the easiest to learn, use, and deploy videos. Regardless of whatever tools I try, I keep coming back to Camtasia. Pros Camtasia is intuitive. It's pretty easy to understand how to get samples into the editor, how to cut scenes, how to stack videos and audio. There are a lot of audio and video effects that are obvious as to how to use them and what they do. The barriers to entry are very low. And it's a decent price for the capabilities. Cons The new "Background Removal" is not great (moving around causes flickering). A long-time complaint is a lack of Video Titling. No easy way to time-reverse a snippet. Chromakey (remove color) doesn't work well. Makes my life a lot easier :-) Pros Easy-of-use and fast result - it is easy to capture the elements I need (Screen Capture), make a few edis and create and publish the video Cons I have sometimes had some technical issues - mostly because Camtasia creates some temp recording that fill up space on my local storage - and eventually breaks down. Pros The best thing I like about Camtasia is that it always stays up to date with video creation trends, so that you can always create relevant videos. Cons If there's a failing, it's simply the learning curve. But really, that's not a failing. It's only because there are so many cool features that it can take a while before you get into the swing of video creation. Once learnt though, it becomes a breeze. Owner Internet Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Intuitive, feature-rich video editor" June 12, 2021 5.0 I use Camtasia as part of a recurring marketing campaign that we create and manage in-house, and every time I'm encountered with a more complex video editing option I go right back to Camtasia. It has every feature I need, is easy to use, and makes editing a cinch. Pros Camtasia makes editing videos simple, fast, and as easy as possible for non-technical editors. It has basically every video editing feature you could want for basic editing, and is very user friendly and intuitive. I love the transition options, annotation options, and other basic affects that all have drag and drop capabilities. It's also really easy to cut out pieces of a video, speed the video or audio up, etc. Cons The upload to YouTube feature just stopped working with the recent version I purchased. My old version still works fine with that but the fact that I can no longer directly upload to YouTube drives me absolutely bonkers. Many others have reported this issue online and there doesn't seem to be a solution as of yet. Editing them and adding callouts is a breeze. Pros It's optimized for creating videos in which screen recordings of software usage predominate. Cons Little things, like the inability to reverse a clip (i.e. play it backwards on the timeline). The ability to export the audio to an external program, edit it there, then bring it back in, would be amazing too. April 22, 2024 4.0 It does what I need most of the time, and when I put in the effort to learn, almost all the time. I wish the audio part was not so expensive. I just need some basic audio editing. I hate having to export it edited in a free tool and then bring it back. I would like to stay in one tool. Pros It is easy to install and get up and running. I think some of the limits are from not spending time learning. Each time I goto a FREE training I learn a lot but I really need to invest more time into learning the software. I think my videos are getting a lot better. Cons It doers not import video from other sources very well. I have to use handbrake to reencode stuff, which sometimes does not even work. I don't know how to import a video shot on my iPhone. It used to work, but now I get a glitchy mess. Owner Arts and Crafts Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Has been indispensible in creating my new video series" September 1, 2021 5.0 I just finished an intensive 6-months project using Camtasia for editing a 30+ hour educational videos series for artists. I had used Camtasia casually for 7-8 years , for fairly small projects, so this was a big step up in my requirements. My timeline generally started with 3 video feeds (3 angles on my work table), a separate audio feed, and Powerpoint slides, then I'd layer in special effects, annotations, and other items. I did have to upgrade my hardware so it could keep up (including an SSD drive) but the software did amazingly well. Since I had been using Camtasia for other work projects for several years, and I've seen improvements in each upgrade. They still put a lot of effort into improving the product. I'm very happy with my results - my videos look professional and well put together. With over 30 hours of video content, it would be easy for the series to become boring, but I can switch camera angles, add transitions, annotations, and other elements which keep it fresh and interesting. I have no hesitation in recommending Camtasia. Pros The product seems to be honed in to provide the features that are critical to non-professional video editors. Ease of use is great, and it has all the features I need to create professional videos Cons A few bugs have popped up here and there, but they've been fixed quickly. I wish it were a little easier to mix in multiple video angles Reason for choosing Camtasia Twice in the past I've tried Adobe Premier. While Premier has more features for a professional editor, I found it difficult to learn and use. Camtasia seems to be geared towards those who need to do video editing - but not so complicated that you need a college degree to understand what's going on. It's super easy to learn for people with no experience creating videos. I had zero experience before I started creating software help videos at my company. There are also many videos and resources to teach you how to do different things. The ability to group different tracks is very helpful for creating animations and saving time having to edit multiple tracks. It has the ability to export to different places easily. This is convenient for uploading the videos to YouTube. It's also convenient to be able to export just small parts of a video quickly to see what it would look like. We have different teams where I am at and it's easy to export and upload what we are working on and share libraries. Cons I do wish camtasia had better audio editing tools. The noise remover and ones they have tend to make things worse rather than better. There is another feature you can purchase in addition to camtasia that specializes in audio. There are times when camtasia crashed and thankfully a separate backup is saved when that happens, but it can be frustrating when you get kicked off. Wish there was a larger free library. Pros Solid interface with a lot of options, including video effects. Allows me to do plenty of mix and match with bits and pieces of videos. Screen recording and video exporting. Excellent Youtube ready export option that saves time. It has customer support and it is updated every year, which is a huge plus. Cons I wish it didn't require so much of my PC resources. Other software that I use for video making/editing use less PC power, so I get things done faster. It can also be a bit cumbersome to learn and understand all the functionalities. But I always think that it's best to have it either as a backup (if you use Premiere Pro for instance) or as a main, with other software (like NCH Video Pad) for the quick tasks of cutting and basic editing. Pros Camtasia allows me to capture screen actions in a very reliable way. I am using it on the Windows and MacOS platform. For simpler videos, it is very handy that Camtasia has video editing functionality built in. Its collection of lower thirds, intros and outros is helpful, too. Cons One of the most important functionalities in video editing is Ripple Delete. Camtasia's implementation of this function does not work well. If you have any track that does not have material directly at your point of cut, then this track will not be processed by ripple delete. The result is that your tracks are out of sync. I love the ability to separate audio and video tracks at the touch of a button. That feature has come in handy more times than I can count. And unlike other video editors I have worked with, Camtasia just works as I expect it to every time. Pros Camtasia is my go-to software for all things video, and also for audio. Its versatility and ease of use have any other software of this kind beat in my opinion. I can record a video or import video from almost any source and edit it quickly to produce final clips that I can then export and drop into an eLearning course, publish online or use in communication. If I could only have one program for handling video, Camtasia would be my choice every time. Cons I am hard-pressed to think of anything that I don't like about Camtasia. It does what it does very well without any fuss. The only thing I can say is that there is a lot going on on the screen with Camtasia and I have found it difficult to use on only a laptop screen at times. Cons Since moving to a faster computer I also have a Hi-Res screen. I can easily export video and audio to manipulate in other programs that do what I need and then import those files back in. I don’t use the other products for the whole project as I find them harder to use. Pros I bought this product to create training videos. I find it very easy to combine screen recordings, camcorder video, screen captures, audio, narration, and clip art. My narration on the first take is never perfect, but I can edit all the bad things out easily. Once done, creating a mp4 with various qualities is easy. It is not overly expensive but there are less expensive (and even free) apps around with the same capabilities, so a free version with fewer options and pay-per-addons would be a great alternative. Pros It is easy to learn, produces high-quality videos and has lots of effects already included that make the job faster. It has all the basic functions and some advanced ones and it has a great interface. Cons Even though it has lots of effects already included, if you do the same type of video again and again the selection becomes limited. The recorder only produces a huge file that needs to be opened in Camtasia and then exported, which makes long recordings very hard to manage. And, if the videos are too big, the software becomes jumpy, which doesn't happen with the same set of videos on a different editor. Review Source RG Richard G. Pros Camtasia does such a great job with screen recording, video editing and video creation. If you need a great screen recording software then this is it. The easy video editing built in makes it useful for videos recorded in other platforms and being able to export in formats supported by YouTube and most elearning platforms makes it easy. Cons While Camtasia does come with some stock images, it would be nice if more were included in a Camtasia subscription as opposed to having to subscribe to images as a separate service.
