It has helped us to troubleshoot and deep dive in MySQL Observability. Pros The earlier industry was the MySQL Observability tool. We were having only basic information tools. PMM has solved our multiple problems. 1. Deep Dive MySQL Observability: Details from performance schema 2. Details from InnoDB Engine 3. System insights This helps us to understand issues in detail. Cons We always expect such products to be more configurable. Some things which we'll expect configurable high availability and tuning. It does not run on a BSD based system. Cons It is not available for FreeBSD or BSD based systems Alternatives considered [ClusterControl](https://www.capterra.com/p/142351/ClusterControl/) Reason for choosing Percona Monitoring and Management We were evaluating software for our Galera clusters. It seems that in order to automate many of the tasks we do by hand, we cannot use a BSD based system: all database management software runs on Linux only. There are many shops with Galera clusters that are BSD only. Even a stripped down version that doesn't need the Linux only hacks would be acceptable. The ClusterControl folks have declined offering a BSD version ... how about you, Percona? All of our machines run FreeBSD, and have done so since the early 1990's. It's extremely helpful, easy to deploy and it makes possible for the whole OPS team to check the status of the DB layer. The Query Analyzer is the only Open Source query visualization tool that is being developed and it's also useful when hunting for problematic/resource intensive queries. Pros Easy to use/deploy, nice interface, good support. Open Source Cons Setting up alerts is still complicated, lacks of scaling for larger deployments. Once they are addressed, and given that it's free; it's very useful for DBAs. Pros Selectable time window view of resource usage. The best I liked is the QAN (Query Analytics). This leads to detailed view of queries run, plan and internal stats related to the query Cons The QAN detail titles are not intuitive at all. Earlier versions had easier way to remove nodes at will. The newer ones make it cumbersome if not too difficult. Removal of monitored host has to be done only via command line. June 17, 2020 5.0 "Monitoring" life became to be very easier when PMM was created. Pros 1\. Very easy deployment! I like that I can just deploy it with ready-to-use docker containers. No dependencies issues, no platform issues... If there is doker - you can go ahead with PMM. 2. Very informative! There are many variables/statuses/parameters which are monitored. 3. Dashboards! There are ready-to-use dashboards. I don't need to take care of anything in 99% of cases. Cons This is just a tiiiiiiiinnnnyyyy thing. PMM needed some attention when it needed to serve more than few hundreds of servers. But it wasn't much complicated. In my case I just disabled non-needed things and kept only those I needed. I would like to see advanced alerting options! In PMM2, Great feature(STT) added which helps to improve security of my database server and monitor database hardening and monitor audit logs. Note: Didn't try for PostgreSQL till now. The fact that we are able to incorporate our Amazon Aurora dashboards for AWS-specific monitoring made choosing this software an easy pick from the alternatives we considered. Pros Percona Monitoring and Management is one of the best tools for managing and monitoring MySQL. It allows the opportunity to see time-based analysis to ensure that our data system is working as efficiently as possible. Although there were a few other similar applications Percona's features knocked the others out of the park. Cons There is nothing we have found to dislike about the product but then again we have been using it for a little over 6 months. I don't foresee any issues in the future as they provide top-notch customer service. Pros PMM out of the box has been a great help in seeing what is going on in our environments. When a production issue arose, we were able to quickly determine what was happening with the system from the graphs available. November 15, 2020 4.0 Pros The simplicity and effectiveness of this software is excellent. At first being a bit sceptical due to the low cost of this software compared to previous, of course we implement a parallel run, within less than 10 days this was all we needed! Resources are well managed and the intuitive UI is straightforward for all types of users! Queries seem even more responsive! Cons So far only 1 month of usage, and once more users are in we should get a more detailed feedback of what could be improved, however I am positive there are not much cons to mention, maybe the backup is somewhat slower than normal. Pros 1\. It's easy deployment. Less than 5 minutes, we can deploy and configure it for multiple servers. 2. We can make our customized dashboard on our needs. 3. No overhead of monitoring in the production servers. Their exporters are well optimized to use minimal resources. Never faced any issues because of them. 4. My favorite part is PMM Query Analytics(QAN). Really helps to find the problematic queries at the time of issues. With its count, load and so on. 5. Their inbuilt Alert Notifications helps to trigger alerts in case of abnormal spikes. It is completely configurable. We can sent these alerts to mail, slack and many it has. Cons 1\. Their error log. In case of any wrong configuration while deployment, it simply throws the error handshake failed. Having some more details will be really helpful to fix it quicker. 2. Some of the graphs does not have any simple explanation(! button at the top of some graphs like connections,client thread activity). It may not useful for experts, but will be really helpful for beginners to identify the purpose of the dashboard. Review Source RH Robert H. The customizations that can be done on the dashboard are very versatile per each administrators use case. We look forward to opening up PMM to monitor other platforms in addition to MySQL. Pros The UI is beautiful and to setup a connection with a trusted user's credentials with the proper privileges to monitor metrics both on premises or in the cloud with an IP address of the endpoint is really simple. I setup PMM at our company and a new member to my team who never used MySQL before hooked up all of our MySQL Instances in less than 20 minutes. Cons We have some restrictions monitoring PostgreSQL RDS with respect to SSL and need root credentials to look at pg\_hba.conf which we do not have. Also to require root privileges to install a client for MongoDB is difficult for administrators in a large organization to obtain due to separation of duties. The ease of setup looks straightforward but usually some hurdles to actually do it. It's performance is smooth even on low resource VMs, and running in a container. Pros PMM comes with easy to follow documentation to get up and running quickly, with the flexibility to work on limited resources, and low minimal requirements for the extremely vast amount of data points it can gather for both hardware, OS, cluster, proxy, and most database level metrics I could ask for. The query analytics is in line with other very expensive products I have used. I love that I can use PMM for high level views across clusters, or drill down to get very specific data points from a single node, or instance. PMM is consistently adding new features, and default dashboards to cover all that I need, and since it's open source, if you need something that is not already included, you can always add whatever else you may want. Can't thank Percona enough for this product! Cons I honestly do not have any cons, or even features I would ask for if given the chance.
