As a site development and underground utility contractor, we rely on accurate job costing, payroll tracking, equipment management, AP/AR, and project reporting, and Foundations helps keep everything organized in one place. One of the biggest benefits is the ability to track labor, equipment, and job costs in real time, giving management better visibility into project performance and profitability. The reporting features are robust, and the software is designed with the construction industry in mind rather than trying to force a generic accounting system to fit our needs. The field logs, payroll integration, project management tools, and accounting modules help streamline operations and improve communication between the office and field teams. We have found that the more data we consistently enter, the more valuable the reporting becomes for estimating future projects and monitoring current ones. I am able to document all of the accounting processes that I need to produce monthly and yearly financial statements Pros Foundation is a complete system for construction accounting with good processes for documenting contracts, change orders, pay applications, invoices, customer payments and subcontractor bills. We can manage our job billing and subcontractor payments over as many months or years as we need. Cons I would like to see more information available on accounts payable reports, specifically to see the vendor name in general ledger history detail reports of expense accounts. As of now it can take them 1 hour to 2 days to call me back. When they do call me back if I am unavailable to answer the phone and try to call back they will have moved on to the next issue. This makes it very difficult to get in touch. It would be easier if I received an email back or a call back window so I know to expect their call. Pros I like that everything I need for business integrates into the Foundation program. The app is very upfront and user friendly. Cons I do not like that you have to keep purchasing apps to do more things. I wish everything like HR-HQ, Workmax, Connectmax, etc were all inside of Foundation. It is not the most user friendly software I have used but with time learning the software I think it is a very capable product and will get the job done. Pros For general operating questions customer support is good responding and assisting. It seems to be a good value for the cost. Cons It definitely has a learning curve. One year in and I still struggle to find the information needed at times. It can be hard to find the reports needed for a task. We have been trying to write some custom extracts for PM's the Owner and it can be hard to get support for those projects. Many software's will have a community of users were they will share some of the "custom" extracts/projects they have created. I do not see that sharing community here. I've dealt with Foundation for many years, and over the years it's been a pretty robust software. Pros As CIO, it is a great reliable software that doesn't seem to have that many issues. For construction companies with complex payroll, job costing, and reporting requirements, it’s one of the better industry-specific accounting systems available. The software is powerful, highly customizable, and clearly built with contractors in mind. While there are areas that could be modernized, particularly around foreign currency functionality, the strength of the core construction accounting features and the outstanding customer support make it a system we would still highly recommend. Pros Foundation has been a really strong fit for our construction accounting needs. The job costing capabilities, payroll functionality, reporting, and overall flexibility are far more tailored to the construction industry than most general accounting software we evaluated. It handles union payroll, multi-state work, certified payroll reporting, and detailed project tracking very well, which is critical for companies like ours. The system has a lot of depth, and once you understand how the modules work together, it can handle a significant amount of operational complexity. Customer support is also exceptional. We’ve worked with many software providers over the years, and Foundation’s support team has honestly been one of the best experiences we’ve had. Their reps are knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely helpful, especially when dealing with complicated construction accounting scenarios. It’s refreshing to work with a support team that actually understands the industry and takes the time to help solve problems instead of reading from scripts. Cons The biggest limitation for us is foreign currency handling. If your company deals with Canadian vendors, international projects, or multi-currency transactions with any regularity, Foundation falls short in that area. There are workarounds, but they tend to be manual and cumbersome compared to what you’d expect from a modern ERP/accounting platform. Some parts of the system can also feel dated from a usability standpoint, and there can be a learning curve for new users because of how robust the software is. However, for construction-specific accounting, the tradeoff is usually worth it. Foundation seems to be catching up and not evolving it's program - rather buying other programs as add-ons when they should look at the outdated features it already has inside and make it better for the clients. Pros That it tries to be a one-stop shop. Service is pretty responsive. For the most part, ease of use is simple. Cons Some of it's features are outdated like the payroll mobile module. They've just given up on it because they've acquired another system. Also, the document imaging hasn't been worked on. There's no drag and drop feature. If you want a query it'll take weeks when it shouldn't and you're charged an outrageous amount for a report that should be built in. It has saved hours of entry and reporting, especially at month and year end! Pros Foundation is a great fit for a small to midsized business that needs more than a Quickbooks type program can offer, but not as much as the expensive and big ERP systems. In Foundation you have several billing types to choose from depending on the needs of your customers. The drill down feature from reports easily give you the detail you need. Document imaging let's you scan and store documents so that they are at your fingertips. No more huge filing cabinets. Great customer service. Cons There is not a function that I've found yet that I dislike. We have been using Foundation since 2018 and still find ways to tweak our operating processes. I would love to have a more user-friendly interface (drag and drop), but overall Foundation is a good software product. We've used it since 2017 and have never seen any reason to switch to anything else. Customer service is prompt in getting back to you. Pros The flexibility of reporting and being able to create custom reports, and the variability in entering several types of transactions. Cons The T&M Module's worksheets can be glitchy & inflexible. i.e. if you try to add a subcontractor invoice to the subcontractor tab, the worksheet will not include that invoice in the fee calculation (but it will on additions to any other tab). That turned out not to be the case, which was the biggest "stain" on your reputation for us, but the product still worked well overall. We do have to manage a lot outside of our accounting system such as changes to employees' benefits. Pros I like that we can pull certified payrolls directly from the system. The customer service is mostly very good and helpful. Cons It is a bit clunky and hard to see the details without digging in further. Finding the information, you need can be difficult. I cannot pull cash basis reports. Certified payrolls are slow to print and save. They system doesn't keep historical information well. There are several things I would change from an accounting perspective but it is a good system for construction if you use it correctly. Pros Customer support, Certified Payroll, Union Reporting, Data Genie reports, Overall it is a very integrated system. Cons \-Lack of ability to pay subs based on pay-when-paid. UPB has some good bones set up but it does not tie to AP to pay vendors well. Payments have to be tracked outside the system. -UPB does not allow retainage paid to be applied so the Project Status Paid Report at the end of a project always shows an unpaid balance. It has a lot of really good information, but doesn't always do the best job of then reporting that information or provide a good way to organize that data. Pros The value for the cost. There are a lot of functions that Foundation's does very well, and it is a great option for smaller businesses that need more than what Quickbooks can offer. Cons The modules do not all speak to one another. Change orders do not flow through to Unit Price Billing. I do not like that you have to request support to help you, bc waiting on the call back can put you in a difficult spot. Core accounting functionality works as expected and is a huge leap forward for someone coming off of QuickBooks and looking for a construction specific accounting software Pros Foundation handles Multi-union and multi-state payroll processing very well and has the ability to do corrections which is huge. Most electronic reporting needs are met as well so certified reports can be uploaded. Cons Lack of an open and public API limits 3rd party apps. Foundation need to prioritize this as it has been promised for some time but now appears to be a closed API release "coming soon" with only their select vendors. It's a solid product and I appreciate the constant development Foundation does. I can't wait to see what the future brings. Pros Foundation runs rather smooth and is relatively user-friendly, which is a big plus for an ERP. Since we are a construction company, and like to provide job costing related reports to our VPs, so we appreciate it's respect for those aspects. There are several functions within that provide us an easy thorough process such as billing. Cons There are a few things that make completing our processes lengthy, or just more difficult in general. First, accessing invoices and/or attachments seems to be tiresome sometimes. Secondly, there seems to be a few too many steps to complete for logging a payment.
