I've guided clients on how much to take in distributions to avoid going into the next marginal tax bracket. Pros The tax clarity software helps me determine my client's effective tax rate. Both the overall rate and the marginal rate. The marginal rate is useful as you help clients convert traditional IRAs into Roth IRAs. Without a tool like tax clarity you would be fumbling around in the dark. Client's CPAs are surprised that the financial advisor is accurately assisting the client understand their taxes. Cons I don't have any cons to speak of honestly. There are several fields in which you can input the various types of income. The fields align with the tax return, so that if you have the tax return it becomes plug and play. If you don't have the tax return, you can still use the program to have a good general idea of the tax rate. Pros The ease of use. We over tax preparation to our clients as an added service. Before using Tax Clarity, we used our tax preparation software for tax planning purposes. Tax Clarity enables us to save time and present analyses in graphic formats. This presentation style enables concepts to be shared visually, which is the preferred learning style for most of our clients. Cons We have no real detriments in using the software. Financial Planner Financial Services Used the software for: 2+ years ### "The best and easiest tool for calculating Roth conversions" July 3, 2020 4.0 Pros This tool helps you do quick tax projections and calculates what it actually costs to pull a dollar out of an IRA. The formula for calculating how much Social Security is taxable is too complicated to do without a program. This software is easy to use and is invaluable to our practice when we are determining which account to pull from for a retiree and how much we should convert to Roth IRAs each year. Cons The only improvement that I would make is to break out the entry of IRA distribution and pension distributions. I have been using this for years and it would be nice to keep different entries saved in the software from prior years so you don't have to keep track of what someone's pension is elsewhere. A similar improvement would be to allow you to save the 2018 plan and the 2019 plan, etc. so that you would be able to easily go back and show the client what you had calculated for them. Reason for choosing Tax Clarity Tax Clarity takes a few hours to learn and takes a few minutes to produce a valuable read on the client's tax liability. I often pull it up while I am on the phone with the client to answer how much they should pull from an IRA vs Roth vs Taxable account. It is a good value for what it provides. It has opened doors for me and made me a better Financial Planner in better understanding the tax code and how it intertwines a client's investments. Pros Being able to graphically see you tax map is huge when it comes to tax planning for ROTH conversions and drawing income in retirement. I could not do this planning without it. Cons I am having trouble matching a clients tax return whenever they have a business. The recent rules on businesses has complicated how to load a particular business and I am not sure if the software is handling it correctly or not or if I just don't know how to load the data. When I make several different scenarios it would be nice to select which one's to print. Currently it prints them all and you have no control on that. Should they do a conversion? How does it impact Social Security? How does it impact tax on qualified dividends or capital gains? Pros It is very user friendly, both for our advisors and clients. Data input is rather straight forward, and the program makes clear where to source the date from on the tax return. Once our advisors became more familiar with the software, it is very efficient to use. The output and analysis is clear and easy to understand. Our clients really appreciate our work and time revolving around tax planning. And our rationale around the advice is easy to understand with Tax Clarity's report. Cons The Tax Clarity software has went through a couple updates. The updates have been good improvements. Maybe I got an email and didn't pay attention, but when I went back on-line (we use TC program at year end mostly) the lay out changed and I was lost trying to find a specific client's profile and inputs from last year. The TC team coached me up on the updates and I was good to go. SO the only CON I can think of off hand was learning the updates, which was easy. July 8, 2020 5.0 I'm a big fan of this software. I took the time to look at all the other options available, and this seemed the easiest to use and has become essential to my practice. Pros I use this software primarily for Tax Planning. It's easy to use and I really like how they show a graph of the marginal tax brackets. It allows me to see the effect of IRA withdrawals on the client's tax return, and I can see how much income I can take for a client before pushing them into the next higher tax bracket. It also will calculate their IRMMA so I know it their Medicare premiums will be affected. Cons I'm not a big fan of the recent software update. I'm given a choice to use the new version or the legacy version, and I stay with the old version every time. I prefer more control over the inputs so I can manipulate the data. I also use it to check to see how accurate my other retirement planning software is when estimating tax withholding on annual withdrawals. Pros The features that were most impactful were being able to share with clients the real numbers that applied specifically to them to save them on their taxes Cons When I called for assistance, I was told that the man I was speaking to it was his last day and that he didnt have time to thoroughly go over my questions and that I needed to request a time and they were extremly busy. The next person I talked to apologized for this situation I encountered but did agree they were very busy. For that the software provides good value. Pros The product is very easy to use and get to an output within a few minutes. Cons It is only capable of handling basic situations. It will not take into account loss of rental property deductions at certain income thresholds for example. The output provides almost no explanation of the results and is less attractive on the PDF than on the screen. Pros I appreciate this software because with most of my clients, I can have an accurate projection of taxes today and in the future, and it takes no more than 5-10 minutes to put together. I can show my clients the exact tax impact of taking social security, recognizing capital gains, earning income, IRA distributions, etc. Cons It may be that I have not delved far enough into the software, but I found it limited when working with more complicated scenarios with business owners and rental properties. I would also like the ability to create one client record and put multiple years worth of scenarios under that one client, versus creating multiple client records. The landscape chart makes decisions easy to understand. Pros If you understand the basics of our Federal tax system, Tax Clarity can help you put in a scenario and model how it will affect a client in minutes. There is not a comprehensive financial planning software available that can actually do tax planning. They may give you tax information but will not allow you to optimize the client situation. This program fills that gap very well. Cons It would be nice to see integrations with major financial planning software programs such as MoneyGuidePro or eMoney.
