Pros

you can see the real-time utilization of the resources and visualize the charts which help you to identify the problems in early stage. You can setup the alarms based on your required criteria.

Cons

The CloudWatch dashboard is a little complex for beginners. You should have a basic knowledge of AWS to use CloudWatch services. You always need expert's help to understand the cost.

### "The way to monitor your AWS"

May 2, 2026

5.0

Pros

Allows you to monitor basically almost every service in AWS, and assign alerts to services you want to be alerted on

Cons

There is a quite large learning curve, and easy to get lost in the configurations of the alerts you want to set for your services

### "Integration within AWS is great, cost transparency is poor, dashboards are a thumbs down"

May 21, 2025

3.0

Overall, there's better monitoring software out there. The dashboards are not visually appealing. I would like to see more cost transparency. I do like the integrations with the other AWS services like ECS and WAF.

Pros

I like the integrations. For example, the integration between AWS ECS and memory utilization CloudWatch alarms. Another example, I like the integration between CloudWatch insights and WAFs logs. That is helpful.

Cons

AWS has great services, but CloudWatch isn't one of them. It is noisy, and cannot mute scaling instances/containers automatically. There's better monitoring/observability software out there. Also, CloudWatch is probably one of the more expensive AWS services out there. I would like to see more transparency on where these CloudWatch costs are coming from. I do not like the dashboard prices. Visualization isn't sleek.

Reason for choosing Amazon CloudWatch

I did not choose CloudWatch. I ended up picking a different software for monitoring. CloudWatch was too bulky, ugly, and expensive. I use CloudWatch for a couple of use cases, but most of the monitoring is done by another vendor.

Pros

Great tool to use to have default metrics for all aws resources and also flexibility to create custom metrics. Really like how it has the logs insights options to query logs in a sql like query and debug issues fast.

Cons

The UI is not very intuitive for some of the things and there should be more options to view metrics graphs based on building expressions.

### "Effective for Metrics and Alarms, but Log search needs some improvments"

September 16, 2025

3.0

In overall, its not bad because its 'pay as you go' and some free tier for basic monitoring. We are utilizing lots of alarms to monitor specific metrics and notifications when it hits its thresholds. Also we can create customized dashboard showing all metrics in real time.

Pros

Most useful and great feature for our use-case is Logs and Metrics. We been using those features since we deployed lambda/ECS/RDS. It is cost-effective and good integration with all other aws services.

Cons

especially for log search, its almost useless. There is a function, "Search all log streams" in Log events and when I type some strings in search bar, it always show nothing in results even though logs has that strings. Also, it takes forever to search some strings in log events

### "Amazing log monitoring tool"

January 20, 2026

5.0

Overall experience is good, since all operation happened on AWS will have logs in amazon cloudwatch system.

Pros

All our aws monitoring dashboard are built from cloudwatch, all lambdas, KMS, RDS have cloudwatch logs, you can turn it on for each operation can check what happens for that operation, it is very easy to use and learn how to query what you need.

Cons

Again, I think they should introduce new AI powered tool to help you find what you need from millions of cloud watch logs instead each time I have to select log group and construct my query to find my data.

Cons

Sometimes the logs can take a while to load. Also I don’t think we would need to hit “load more to see older or newer events.

### "CloudWatch brings visibility to your AWS stack"

May 29, 2022

5.0

You don't have to use AWS for very long to have this happen: you've got instances and tasks and containers and all kinds of "machines", whether physical or virtual, running all over the place, and you want to figure out how to see what's going on internally with one of them. Maybe you just want a quick look at the Apache logs. In the "good old days" you'd just SSH into the instance. But with Docker and virtualization and everything, that's not so easily said and done anymore. Enter CloudWatch. Think of it as a centralized logging store. When you start up containers and instances and tasks and such, you can ask AWS to automatically have whatever you are spinning up log its internals to CloudWatch. You can then jump into CW anytime you need to take a look at what's happening inside that box. Need Apache logs? They're right there. Even better, they are searchable using a good (but not great) interface. Also, CW will bring together the logs from separate ECS tasks into one log group, if you want. So if you have a handful of tasks running, you can search across all of them in one go and find the misbehaving one much more easily than SSH'ing into 6 instances trying to locate the culprit. Extra bonus: with just a teeny bit of coding on your end you can actually have your application log items to CW directly. Use Lambda to monitor it, and push that to Slack, and you've got custom monitoring, built into your AWS stacks. CW is critical to doing AWS right.

Pros

\* One-stop shopping for visibility on all your instances (and tasks and sub-instances and whatever else that AWS makes it so easy to spin up but then so hard to keep track of later) \* Easy to hook into Lambda (which can then call to Slack or some other service) so that you can get push notifications about whatever's happening

Cons

\* The search facility is not as good as it probably could be. If you have a line of output from a log, for instance, and you want to see where that line of output came from, and you do not know which log group it's from, you are out of luck. You can only search inside a log or log group, which means you have to know where the output came from to start with, but that might be exactly the issue you're trying to figure out in the first place: where is this output coming from. \* AWS instances and tasks automatically start up with CW integration but that can quickly result in loads of orphaned CW log groups and such if you then do away with the instances but don't remember to go into CW and kill those as well.

Reason for choosing Amazon CloudWatch

No other option really, other than simply looking at manual log files, which isn't really an option with the way AWS is designed. CW is one of the reasons why AWS works.
