May 9, 2021 5.0 Percona XtraBackup has made our infra lighter and easier in terms of handling the MySQL server backups and provided us with all the reliability and precision we expected. We really didn't regret evaluating Xtrabackup and it's worth using for all its features and affordable prices. Pros XtraBackup has delivered on its promise since it launched in the market. Being a large enterprise, we have deployments and production on various public clouds and we believe in Hybrid infra. XtraBackup has been a great solution for our MySQL-based servers. While evaluating the product we were really impressed with its appealing features like compression, streaming, parallelism. And one of the best parts is that it supports incremental backups. We have loads of VMs running and with slight configurations, we can easily trigger XtraBackup to do its job. Percona has even open-sourced its products which offers great scope for its features to be enhanced as the larger community would always keep contributing to it. Lastly, the customer support and the community is always there to resolve your queries and help you use them hassle-free. Cons XtraBackup has really lived up to its expectation during evaluation and served its purpose perfectly fine and we are yet to find any cons in it. Xtrabackup has been incredibly helpful when it comes to recreating replica servers as its able to stream the backup to another server without needing to allocate that space on the main server itself. Cons XtraBackup as a tool is very well thought out. Sometimes its hard to remember what flags/arguments to pass when running it, but Percona has excellent documentation on how to utilize the tool for various different scenarios Review Source DMG Diego M. But when your database is bigger or you need a more advanced solution, Oracle charges for this commercial grade solution. Percona XtraBackup is a free solution that matches 1:1 all the commercial features for backups that you can find in Oracle's solution. The syntax is also almost identical, so you can move from one to another without effort. But once you have started using Percona XtraBackup you will not want to go back! Opinions expressed here are my own and not the opinions of my employer. Pros It's very easy to use and will create working backups for very big databases in a reasonable amount of time. And it's free, as in no-cost and source available. The best kind of free Cons The documentation can be a little bit challenging if you are trying to perform some advanced operations. ie. restoring only a table or a schema. Easy to restore from it and re/build slaves as well. Pros Tried and tested backup solution. Does online backups for innodb tables, will need to lock MyISAM tables, doesn;t require the database to be stopped. Cons Takes a while to understand how to use it. It can also run incremental backups and encrypted backups. Restores can be a matter of minutes. Cons Sometimes in between major MySQL version upgrades, older version of xtrabackup might start failing in taking the backups and it's not straightforward what is the source of the problem. It's by far the best way to back up your database. Cons You can't restore just one table. You have to restore the entire db but with a bit of shell scripting you can sort of accomplish this.
