The main consideration is managing cost and configuration complexity as the environment grows, but the visibility and control it provides make it a valuable service for AWS environments. Pros AWS Config provides strong visibility into the configuration and compliance status of AWS resources. I particularly like its ability to continuously track resource configurations, maintain configuration history, and evaluate resources against compliance rules. Once in place and configured correctly, however, it operates in a very much, 'set and forget' fashion. Pros AWS Config does a good job of providing visibility into that what, and when, of changes across your AWS environment. It excels at providing a track of resources configuration and history; providing a central point of reference when you need to understand how something may have arrived in it's current state vs where it started. Once time is spent configuring everything correctly, it provides a reliable audit trail that is invaluable for both troubleshooting and governance. Cons Config can often feel more like a compliance and audit tool as opposed to a simple, intuitive window into your environment for day to day use. As with all cloud services AWS provides, it has a very steep learning curve and requires a lot of time and effort to extract and leverage its value, which is not always immediately obvious otherwise. As is common in AWS, there always seems to be many moving components that are not always obvious to see interconnection, and thus requires an investment of time and energy before it becomes genuinely useful and informative. All our servers, server types, storage in s3, and RDS. This gives us a quick overview of our entire application ecosystem and its structure. This allows us to assess any inefficiencies or gaps that need to be closed. Cons I wish it would suggest better improvements and includes more parts of the ecosystem such as types of spot instances and maybe how many times it has been an issue.
