"Delivers what it promises"

Overall: I was able to get insights into large data files in a matter of minutes without using any code (did go through the youtube tutorial). Could be really handy for quick high level insights.

Pros: Easy to use, really simple and intuitive UI, Data Flow view, no-code, and its ability to handle large data files.

Cons: - Lacks the flexibility of Numpy/Pandas/Seaborn/Matplotlib stack. - Might not be useful to a moderate to proficient coder - Needs some more data visualization options - An interface to code and execute user defined functions might be useful.

"Long-awaited product for data wrangling"

Overall: I'm a data scientist at the University of Manchester and I can see the potential that a tool like Data Preparer can have in saving time when preparing the data to be analysed. A process that can take a long time is now almost completely automated and, even so, with sufficient flexibility for the user to accomodate varied requirements for the wrangling process or for the end product. By making the wrangling process more efficient I can now dedicate more time to the data analysis and publication of my work.

Pros: The workflow of the software is intuitive and saves a lot of manual work in every step of the process. Simple configuration to adequate the wrangling process to the user needs whilst including the option to review the end product in detail for more experienced data users.

Cons: Although most of the complexity is hidden from the end user, some functionality (like the user context and control panel tabs) may look intimidating for those users with less experience in these topics.

Reasons for Switching to Data Preparer: Data preparer provides all the functionality I need for the fraction of the cost of the other tool

"Nice first version of product, requires more features."

Pros: Ease of use. Works really well for merging datasets.

Cons: Couldn't find a way to import data from multiple URLs (i.e. RESTful URLs with IDs). More types of datasources should be added.

Vendor Response

By The Data Value Factory on August 26, 2020
Thanks for trying Data Preparer! We would like to clarify the handling of data from RESTful URLs: Data Preparer supports, among others, handling data sources from URIs that return a csv, tsv, excel, or json that contains an array. See option "add uri" in the sources page, or, for more details, the User Manual. The command-line interface can also be used to initialise a Data Preparer instance with multiple sources at once. Please do not hesitate to contact us via the help desk in the logged-in section of the web site, or by emailing support@thedatavaluefactory.com, so we can help you further with your use case.

"A software for making better use of your data"

Overall: With Data Preparer, my data analysis is easier and faster, so I get my insights more easily. By saving time and effort, I can focus on even more complex data analysis tasks and keep finding ways to implement them in my Data Preparer workflows.

Pros: I had the opportunity to get early access to the Data Preparer software and was thrilled to get my hands on it. I have been traditionally using data coming from various sources (e.g. automated exports from databases) and in various formats, mostly spreadsheets. My issue has always been the fact that I had to use the same data for serving different purposes and users, and this requires a lot of manual work for transforming the data into the expected output each time. With Data Preparer I was able to easily define my expected outcomes and use the data to achieve that - without having to code (I do not code at all!) or to perform complex transformations and defining numerous rules. Thus, I save time and effort and by using the Data Preparer I can provide even more to the users I serve with the data.

Cons: So far I have not faced any issues. As with any other software, it takes some time to get used to it and explore its functionalities - so that you can make the most out of it. Data Preparer is easy to use and have not faced issues so far. If I had to suggest something, it would be the support of even more data types (in the future).

"An excellent solution for data pre-processing"

Overall: This was a very positive experience. A user can quickly learn how to use the software and prepare datasets from multiple sources in very short time.

Pros: The simplicity with which an inexperienced user can create a new dataset by combining attributes from multiple datasets. The ability to filter the mapped values thus combining joins with filters. Also the ability to set wrangling criteria. All these options allow a more precise data preparation from data management experts. The statistics and analytics that are available for the resulting data are very useful. The ability to combine data from multiple sources in the backend.

Cons: I would prefer having a few more visualisations of the resulting dataset. A workflow-like visualization of the data wrangling process would be useful.
