Pros I use it from both angles- both for finding freelance jobs, as well as for finding candidates; I love that switching is seamless, finding your messages is a no brainer compared to other UIs, and of course I love the fact that there are many opportunities for freelancers offered online. Also, Upwork staff can help with requests asking for what to post to find freelancers, and their newsletter gives helpful tips pn how to find freelance work. Cons As freelancer I find the share Upwork takes a bit too high (they should make it 10% deduction for everyone), and there is a huge amount of competition from low cost countries. It was very easy to standup the business by leaning on the Upwork platform. Pros The volume of jobs that exist on upwork makes it easy for freelancers to fill a pipeline and create steady work. Cons The "connects" or token system can prohibit matching a freelancer with a job that is a good fit, but the ability for job posters to invite specific applicants is a really good option. April 13, 2021 4.0 UpWork is a very good freelancing site and there's a lot of room for potential if you keep trying, however, there seems to be too much competition to even get started and rated, and the bids are too expensive for the average or beginner freelancer. Some gigs cost like 10 bids, and if you spend the gigs and don't get the job, then you've lost money, because you have to pay for the bids in advance. So, I think it would be best to build a strong reputation on Social Media or via a Blog, before bidding on gigs on UpWork, so the employers can get a better understanding of who you and what you can do. Cons I love the wide selection of gigs available, however, I don't like how you need to pay for bids, it adds up over time, and for the most part I haven't received an actual gig as yet, and thus I've lost money. Pros I like how I can search for 5 different kind of solution providers at the same time. I take 5 minutes a day per kind of solution provider. I can search for talent directly, and if urgent, get a response within 24 hours. With a well written job description, this could mean work starts in 24 hours. Cons Their website payment freezes with random errors, so I cannot hire candidate. But I just switch to mobile view. If my card is frozen, and I try payment, it says card is rejected, have to go and provided CVC code again to activate it. Bit a of a hassle, a "try again" button would be great. If you don't trust yourself hiring a freelancer as a client, Upwork is great - you probaby won't get ripped off. I don't fall into either of those categories, so I don't use Upwork anymore. Pros It's very easy to find and interact with people, both from a freelancer perspective as well as the client's perspective. They seem to have the security dialed in as well, and it's somewhat difficult to get ripped off by people who aren't trustworthy. Cons Upwork's take is 20%. I know that's the industry standard, but it's a lot. I feel I would be better served, and Upwork would also, by a smaller take resulting in more orders.
