July 7, 2023 5.0 Communication is our largest challenge, especially getting everyone in the same room to participate and have input. This tool really helps with that. Pros The flexibility with the presentation formats is stellar, especially when you don't want yet another PPT that cannot engage the audience. Cons Copying and Pasting is not easy, i.e. when there is a set of questions to go out to a variety of participants, it is not easy to select the whole set and copy to another column for an additional participant. Pros I use this platform to receive homework from my students or to reiterate any announcements or rules in the classroom. This is the best and easiest way for the students to finish their homework, and for me to grade their work and share the corrections with everyone. The students can view all the graded homework and my comments, seeing what works and what doesn't. The students enjoy uploading images and videos to illustrate their point. Cons It would work better if everything was invisible until approved and graded. Some students think they can plagiarize other students' work. They never get away with it, but temptation is still too strong. Some students have been able to gain access to administrator settings, which has been unfortunate. Users are able to quickly share their ideas and is therefore a perfect starting point for conversations, seminars, or surveys. Pros Padlet is a simple way for groups of people to share ideas, brainstorm, and start conversations. In the classroom setting I have used it many times for students to anonymously project ideas on the screen. This easy to access software can help students to get out of their shells and contribute to a conversation/seminar in ways that they otherwise wouldn't have. Cons Padlet's features are functional and easy to use, however they are at times simplistic and lack the more refined features that would be helpful. It feels like an online version of having individuals place stickynotes on a corkboard. It can also be difficult to vet inappropriate submissions if you are not vigilant. You can delete pages once you don't need them to free up Padlet space to remain in the free version. Cons The template is set; however, you can add more columns and boxes under the columns. It is easy to see - in real time - which students are doing the work / preparing their presentations on time - and also very easy for me as an educator to correct grammar / spelling mistakes . Pros Very easy to use + FUN for students to use , so they research/prepare their presentations at home and no class time is wasted on explaining what to do . Cons Sometimes the slides get mixed up , also a little confusing to have writing both above and below slides - A good option might be to have a menu where you could restrict writing to only section ABOVE the visuals or the section BELOW the visuals - or both ( if you choose this option ) . A lot of processes like mood boarding, user mapping, collateral showcase becomes very easy to showcase. If we use Google slides or Google docs to attempt something similar, others can see what we're doing before we're done, and it can be intimidating. Pros It's easy and fun, and compelling for the students to participate and write what's on their mind. Cons Not really an issue but there are "too many" options and I fear I might not always be using the best method to hold my discussion forums in class. Complaining for nothing, I know.
