I’ve used several other documentation and process capture tools in the past, but Folge has been the best fit for my requirements by far. The output is clean, easy to understand, and ideal for creating user-friendly procedures and how-to guides. It has significantly improved the consistency and quality of my documentation. Overall, it’s a very well-thought-out tool that delivers real value. Highly recommended for anyone who creates process documentation regularly. Pros The keystroke-based process capture is a unique feature and something I couldn’t find done this well in any other tool. November 4, 2025 5.0 The app was easy to download, simple to configure my license, and has run smoothly so far across a variety of guides: exporting HTML, PDFs, exporting articles directly to my Confluence instance. And the support...completely amazing. I emailed regarding a minor issue that cropped up when sending an article to Confluence, where an information box was being sent over as a warning box. Oleksii responded within minutes with not only an acknowledgement, but he even had a solution and offered to send me a custom patched version if I needed it before the next planned release. I was stunned. That’s simply amazing customer service. Pros It’s a one-time payment, and you can download the software and keep it forever. No subscription. It took me a second to understand the workflow, but once I did, it became a snap to understand how everything worked together, and for anything else there's documentation available. The editor for images and the rich text editor are top notch. Folge makes it so easy to add steps, capture screenshots, zoom in, place cursors/arrows/numbering/highlighting...anything I’ve wanted to do, it’s had built in already! And the best part is the export options. I can create PDFs, export quick HTML pages and markup I can throw into static docs sites, and it even has a direct Confluence integration that lets me add KB articles and ticket documentation in moments...so now my company is actually growing its internal processes knowledge base instead of just fixing tickets and having to figure things out again and again. It gives you the ability to customize your guides to a high degree: custom options for each step, customizable content sections that markup and code, the content editor even includes an AI-writer to generate content on the fly, and even more that I haven’t even managed to find yet. Cons Compared with other software, it’s hard to think of a single thing... I guess I could say the thing Folge lacks most is: video. Folge doesn’t do video or audio recordings. Some competitors can record video and do AI voiceovers with it, which was a nice feature...but when you realize that those apps cost 30–40% of what Folge does, but EVERY MONTH, FOREVER...they can keep their video! Seriously, I can have Folge for all my needs for a great price, or I can pay nearly as much every month for a video clip at the top of my guides. No, thanks. It’s incredibly easy to learn. I was up and running in minutes, and it saves me hours when documenting workflows, onboarding new staff, or creating internal guides/SOPs. The combination of recording, editing, and exporting in one streamlined interface makes it an absolute game-changer for documentation. Again, the possibility to record on the desktop, and not only in a browser, is a huge benefit and makes this tool stand out from many others. Pros The simplicity and power! You just hit "record," do your task as usual, and Folge automatically documents every step. The editing interface is intuitive — you can reorder steps, annotate, add screenshots, and even use OCR. I appreciate that everything is stored locally by default, giving me complete control over my data. The export options (HTML, PDF, Markdown, JSON) are also incredibly versatile. A significant benefit is also that it is a desktop app. Making it possible to record and document workflows in all software, not only in the browser. Cons Honestly, very little to complain about. Owner Information Technology and Services Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "Perfect, affordable successor to Clarify and Screensteps" March 19, 2025 5.0 I was a long-time Clarify and Screensteps user and, for me, these were the gold standard for annotation/documentation apps. Sadly, when Clarify went EOL and Screensteps moved to a subscription model that was prohibitive for a single-user operation like mine, I was left scrambling for alternatives. I've tried alternatives but none could match the power and flexibility of Clarify or Screensteps. Imagine my delight when I stumbled across Folge; within minutes of trying it I bought the license. Finally, making documentation is fun again! Pros Folge has a lot going for it! Made short work of importing a folder of screenshots and letting me organize into steps and substeps. Adding annotations and custom text blocks to each step is a cinch. Lots of annotation options, including sequential numbers, blur and a mouse pointer. Lots of export options: standards like HTML, Word and HTML but also Powerpoint, Markdown and JSON. Customize style and formatting using CSS and HTML. Global and guide-specific text placeholders make it easy to white label a guide and repurpose for specific users or clients. Most of all, I'd say that developer responsiveness is the #1 reason to love Folge. Just take a look at the changelog and the public feature request forum. Users can make suggestions, vote up their favourites, and watch features move from wishlist to completion. Oleksii pays close attention to suggestions for improving Folge and implementing those suggestions. Since Clarify died years ago, this is by far the best documentation software I've found, especially for the price. Pros I find the workflow process in Folge to be superior to other processes I've used. I can put together teaching how to docs quickly, and accurately, which allows me more time for student interaction. What took me four hours with cut/paste and word takes me 45 minutes and looks superior, and exports in Markdown (my preferred format) for my Wordpress course website. Cons The only suggestion I have that would improve this software is to bring it to Linux/Ubuntu, so that those outside the major software ecosystems can use it. The continual improvement is just an extra bonus for software that has made my life wholly easier. Pros Folge is exceptional and stands apart from other pieces of software for several reasons. One, it is not a subscription-based license model. Two, the free version is plenty robust enough to tout it's value and make you investing in getting the paid version. Three, the click to capture feature is so convenient. Honestly, every small feature from customizations, cover pages, table of content, etc are quality of life improvements to the long and manual way I created my documentation before through various platforms. Lots of export options, local saves so I don't have to worry about data privacy, auto backups. It's all there plus some that I didn't know I needed. Plus, the founder is super responsive to questions! I am literally trying to convince everyone I work with and outside friends to start using this. Pros There are many things that I love about Folge, however the main feature for me is being able to easily create step by step guides with ease. The steps can either be added to the guide by using the built in capture tool, or images imported from a 3rd party solution. Within a matter of moments, you can add supporting text and export to a variety of formats for sharing. It makes producing a bug report, or basic user guide a dream! Cons There are a couple of features which I would like to see added, but those are certainly classed as 'wish list' items and do not prevent me from using Folge as is. When customer service has been required, it has been very quick and helpful service. Pros Folge is such a valuable and time saving tool for process or instructional documents. Rather than explaining via text how to execute an activity in a system and spending countless hours cropping, formatting, etc. Folge does it all seamlessly. Competitors to Folge do not offer the ability to export documents to a variety of file types and generally keep you tied to housing your documents within Google or their hosted environment. Folge allows you to choose what works best and is just a one time fee vs. a crazy high monthly fee for users. Work flow is fast and snappy so you can work through all your steps and then export it to multiple formats - many of which are presentable enough to hand over to the customer or client as is. EHR Analyst Medical Practice Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Folge makes it easy to capture and create instructional software guides" February 14, 2023 4.0 I work in healthcare, and I use Folge to make guides, explanations, and instructions for healthcare providers to follow when using the Electronics Health Records software. The PDF guides that it makes are very clean looking and a lot of the items in the PDF can be adjusted, such as page numbering, font type and sizes, and page arrangement. Pros The best feature is how easy it is to capture step by step screenshots to demonstrate steps or processes on a computer or when using computer software. Folge will take a separate screenshot for each click that you make, showing what you are doing for each step. It is easy to then arrange the screenshots into a set of steps and annotate the screenshots in order. Cons I think some of the image annotation features could be improved. Folge gives you the ability to draw arrows, lines, text, and other symbols on the images/screenshots that you capture. When I convert these to PDF it seems that some of the annotated items can appear blurry, although it is generally not an issue. I think that this could be improved a bit. Review Source TC Tim C. Pros It is very easy to convince other employees to create guides(instructions) for others. They can do it at the same time they are working, maybe extra 1-2min to set up the guide. Cons I would have liked to be able to share my guides more easier, but according to Folge's staff they are working on it. That being said, it is possible to share it via backup, so the option is there. Reason for choosing Folge I was not able to use the free version, to test if the program was for me. The other one was much more expensive and did not have any extra features compared to Folge. The customer service is fantastic and all my questions were answered very quickly and well answered.
