I’ve used several other documentation and process capture tools in the past, but Folge has been the best fit for my requirements by far. The output is clean, easy to understand, and ideal for creating user-friendly procedures and how-to guides. It has significantly improved the consistency and quality of my documentation. Overall, it’s a very well-thought-out tool that delivers real value. Highly recommended for anyone who creates process documentation regularly. Pros The keystroke-based process capture is a unique feature and something I couldn’t find done this well in any other tool. It saves a huge amount of time and removes the manual effort usually involved in creating step-by-step guides. Also Oleksii is super helpful, whenever I have a suggestion or an issue I can easily discuss with him and he is helpful in catering those requirements. And the support...completely amazing. I emailed regarding a minor issue that cropped up when sending an article to Confluence, where an information box was being sent over as a warning box. Oleksii responded within minutes with not only an acknowledgement, but he even had a solution and offered to send me a custom patched version if I needed it before the next planned release. I was stunned. That’s simply amazing customer service. Pros It’s a one-time payment, and you can download the software and keep it forever. No subscription. It took me a second to understand the workflow, but once I did, it became a snap to understand how everything worked together, and for anything else there's documentation available. The editor for images and the rich text editor are top notch. Folge makes it so easy to add steps, capture screenshots, zoom in, place cursors/arrows/numbering/highlighting...anything I’ve wanted to do, it’s had built in already! And the best part is the export options. I can create PDFs, export quick HTML pages and markup I can throw into static docs sites, and it even has a direct Confluence integration that lets me add KB articles and ticket documentation in moments...so now my company is actually growing its internal processes knowledge base instead of just fixing tickets and having to figure things out again and again. It gives you the ability to customize your guides to a high degree: custom options for each step, customizable content sections that markup and code, the content editor even includes an AI-writer to generate content on the fly, and even more that I haven’t even managed to find yet. Cons Compared with other software, it’s hard to think of a single thing... I guess I could say the thing Folge lacks most is: video. Folge doesn’t do video or audio recordings. Some competitors can record video and do AI voiceovers with it, which was a nice feature...but when you realize that those apps cost 30–40% of what Folge does, but EVERY MONTH, FOREVER...they can keep their video! Seriously, I can have Folge for all my needs for a great price, or I can pay nearly as much every month for a video clip at the top of my guides. No, thanks. Guidde had videos and AI voiceovers, which was great...but beyond that Folge had everything else. It’s incredibly easy to learn. I was up and running in minutes, and it saves me hours when documenting workflows, onboarding new staff, or creating internal guides/SOPs. The combination of recording, editing, and exporting in one streamlined interface makes it an absolute game-changer for documentation. Again, the possibility to record on the desktop, and not only in a browser, is a huge benefit and makes this tool stand out from many others. Pros The simplicity and power! You just hit "record," do your task as usual, and Folge automatically documents every step. The editing interface is intuitive — you can reorder steps, annotate, add screenshots, and even use OCR. I appreciate that everything is stored locally by default, giving me complete control over my data. The export options (HTML, PDF, Markdown, JSON) are also incredibly versatile. A significant benefit is also that it is a desktop app. Making it possible to record and document workflows in all software, not only in the browser. Cons Honestly, very little to complain about. Maybe the design could be slightly more modern, and I’d love a bit more automation when cleaning up steps, but that’s nitpicking. I'm sure we will see more AI functions very soon. Pros Guides are easy to create, either from scratch or screen capture, and I appreciate how PDFs can be previewed before being exported. It didn't long to learn how to use Folge, and I've recommended it to people in our department because of its quality and price. Cons I don't particularly like the way Steps look, and prefer using Content Blocks if starting from scratch, but Steps be easily customized with CSS if exporting to PDF or HTML. Oleksii pays close attention to suggestions for improving Folge and implementing those suggestions. Since Clarify died years ago, this is by far the best documentation software I've found, especially for the price. Pros I find the workflow process in Folge to be superior to other processes I've used. I can put together teaching how to docs quickly, and accurately, which allows me more time for student interaction. What took me four hours with cut/paste and word takes me 45 minutes and looks superior, and exports in Markdown (my preferred format) for my Wordpress course website. Cons The only suggestion I have that would improve this software is to bring it to Linux/Ubuntu, so that those outside the major software ecosystems can use it. Sadly, when Clarify went EOL and Screensteps moved to a subscription model that was prohibitive for a single-user operation like mine, I was left scrambling for alternatives. I've tried alternatives but none could match the power and flexibility of Clarify or Screensteps. Imagine my delight when I stumbled across Folge; within minutes of trying it I bought the license. Finally, making documentation is fun again! Pros Folge has a lot going for it! Made short work of importing a folder of screenshots and letting me organize into steps and substeps. Adding annotations and custom text blocks to each step is a cinch. Lots of annotation options, including sequential numbers, blur and a mouse pointer. Lots of export options: standards like HTML, Word and HTML but also Powerpoint, Markdown and JSON. Customize style and formatting using CSS and HTML. Global and guide-specific text placeholders make it easy to white label a guide and repurpose for specific users or clients. Most of all, I'd say that developer responsiveness is the #1 reason to love Folge. Just take a look at the changelog and the public feature request forum. Users can make suggestions, vote up their favourites, and watch features move from wishlist to completion. Cons Some parts of the interface take a little getting used to, i.e. settings seem to be all over the place and require a bit of hunting.
