“I like that other than spelling variants, you can also choose different styles (UN Style, WHO Style, American legal style) and even create your own style, which definitely comes in handy when working with different clients and style guides.“

“However, the one big catch is how long it takes to process/think, which doesn't seem to speed up even if there are 50,000 fewer words. As previously noted, some easily sorted "style choices" – like using a compound word as a modifier and a standalone word, and therefore having it exist in the manuscript as both hyphenated and not hyphenated – come up as contradictions to your set style, and I have to click through quite a lot of those, so I wish the software recognised those and disregarded them.“

### "A 'must have' for any editor or proofreader."

July 13, 2022

5.0

Since the first day of the trial, I knew it was for me, and I haven't looked back. I bought it early before the trial ended, and was delighted when CMOS partnered. I enjoyed my work before, but now I love love love it.

Pros

PerfectIt helps me to save time while increasing accuracy in the editing services I provide. The thing I most like it has a CMOS add-in. Coupled with an experienced editor, they make a killer team. This software has elevated my business from mediocre, to exceptional.

Cons

It removes my tracked change's view from a simple view to none. This is a little frustrating, but something I can definitely live with considering what else it brings to the table.

### "Never going back!"

June 2, 2022

5.0

I will never stop using PerfectIt, because there is no substitute for its functionality and no denying how much it has improved my writing and editing.

Pros

PerfectIt is like no editing software I've ever used. Its ability to scan an entire document for consistency is unparalleled, catching even the smallest and trickest of errors that the human eye would never have caught. It's also incredibly fast (no need to click through errors one by one when you can correct them all with one click).

Cons

It is sometimes unreliable. Error messages are frequent, saying a certain check couldn't be run. Multiple times, using the "Eliminate double spaces" function on the final check screen has caused Microsoft Word to freeze and crash completely, losing my work. Error message of "Cannot open PerfectIt" also happens at least one or twice a week. Setting the features for your own style guides is a bit tricky. I often have to go in and change certain features by hand between edits (e.g., both papers need APA, but one using quotation marks in a unique way). It is hard to remember if I've changed the guide back to the default. Ideally, PerfectIt should come with all the major style guides pre-set (APA, Chicago, etc.) and there should be an easy toggle button to adjust the elements that are more frequently changed (like "Does this paper use Oxford commas?). The toggle should revert to the traditional style after use in a paper.

[ProWritingAid](https://www.capterra.com/p/170745/ProWritingAid/)

PerfectIt was recommended and so much easier to use/offered so many more features.

### "Terrible on Macs"

September 22, 2021

3.0

Poor. Full on poor.

Pros

I want to love this software. It can be so helpful to catch the small editing errors clients make.

Cons

However, I don't love this software because it fails out ALL THE TIME. It almost never actually completes the full review of the text. It gives an error message suggesting that it's my internet connection that's the problem but that's obviously not true. I have great internet. The problem is with PerfectIt's version for Macs. This is well-known and yet has never been addressed. Macs are not some mysterious entity - and a ton of professionals use them. Intelligent Editing should be embarrassed about its PerfectIt for Macs. Get it fixed! Why am I paying top dollar for a program that is substandard? And why is it substandard?

### "This is an excellent consistency checker"

May 27, 2022

5.0

It saves me time and my accuracy has improved.

Pros

I love the styles that come with the software and that you can add-on the CMOS. It's fast and easy to use and more importantly - accurate.

Cons

I've been using it for years and there were a few features I didn't really take advantage of because I wasn't sure how to use them. I think it would be a great idea to have some videos that come with the package or a discount code for \[SENSITIVE CONTENT\] course.

### "I've used PerfectIt for well over 10 years and am still using and recommending it."

May 4, 2022

5.0

Pros

I was introduced to PerfectIt when I was editing public multi-author government reports. PerfectIt was ideal for ensuring the writing/style/spelling/use of hyphens in the final report was consistent. Now I am publishing SF&F books I use it to ensure that the individual author's world building remains consistent. The addition of links to the Chicago Manual of Style has only made it better.

Cons

I would like PerfectIt to be able to integrate with Scrivener for my own writing, but there are very few products that actually integrate with Scrivener. And given that I have to do the final formatting of a my own manuscripts in Word, its not difficult to just run PerfectIt over the Word document.

### "PerfectIt pays for itself in time saved over and over again"

November 23, 2021

4.0

I love this product. I have tested numerous competitive software products over time, just to see what else is out there, but this is the one product I cannot do without in my business.

Pros

I love that PerfectIt sweats all the small stuff--and there is so much of that--and frees me up to concentrate on language usage itself. This product has paid for itself countless times over and over again in the amount of hours and possible embarrassment it has saved me. It's just so reliable at catching errors, but I retain full control of accepting or rejecting each recommended change. I also love that I can create my own style sheets, although the ones that come with the software are already pretty awesome. And now that the Chicago Manual of Style is included as a given style sheet, with a subscription to CMOS itself, this software is absolutely critical to the success of my freelance business.

Cons

I wish to be able to set UK/US English as part of selecting my preferred style sheet, rather than in a separate style sheet. My client's documents are constantly switching between US and UK English, but I cannot meld that choice of language with, for example, the CMOS style sheet. That interrupts my thought processes as I work through the style sheet and need to reject certain fixes because of the language choice. I've never been able to figure a work-around for this problem. This is especially an issue in the Mac Cloud version of the software (I use both PC and Mac versions of the software).

### "PerfectIt is the best for editors"

May 5, 2022

5.0

As noted, I have used PerfectIt for years and it is part of my daily routine. At one point, I had to contact the company to see if they could help with an upgrade because I no longer had access to the email address I had used and could not find my registration code. To my surprise, although I emailed in the middle of the night, I had a solution within hours. That is awesome customer service!

Pros

I've used PerfectIt for years now, every day, and cannot imagine doing my job as an editor without it anymore. Unlike many grammar/spell checkers, PerfectIt doesn't give me a ton of incorrect "fixes. The ability to customize and use a wide variety of style guides is crucial for me, as I switch between a number of styles on a daily basis. Also, the software is quick, so it doesn't feel like a burden to add on at the end of an edit to ensure I caught all the critical pieces, such as punctuation.

Cons

The only negative I can think of is that it very, very occasionally crashes, but that has only happened about once every 6 months, far less than pretty much any other plug-in software I have used.

### "I wouldn't be without it."

April 8, 2022

5.0

Now that I've got it, I couldn't imagine doing my job without the help of PerfectIt. I like that it's a safe pair of hands and a second pair of eyes for anything I work on. I work on a lot of book manuscripts and PerfectIt manages to handle large files without crashing. The software is really fast and it helps me edit for consistency, finding everything from missing brackets and quotation marks to rogue spaces where you don't want them. It allows me to set preferences for headings, build my own style sheets and even set my preference for using the Oxford comma or not. It definitely helps me submit better-quality work to my clients.

Pros

I started using PerfectIt about a year ago as part of my job as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader and I now wouldn't be without it. I work on a lot of government documents which are full of abbreviations. PerfectIt is brilliant for checking the consistency of these in terms of both the abbreviation and its expanded title.

Cons

I had a few issues when I first launched the software because I have a GoDaddy account for my website and the Microsoft 365 software I use via GoDaddy threw up a few issues when I tried using the Cloud version software for the first time (I'm on a Mac). However, \[SENSITIVE CONTENT\] at customer care responded to my email almost immediately, to be fair, and solved my problem with a quick reply.

### "A welcome update for editors using CMOS but Cloud for Mac issues continue."

August 27, 2021

4.0

PerfectIt is essential for my business and the addition of the Chicago Manual of Style option is fabulous and will help me greatly in my editing business. Unfortunately, the Mac version is frustrating to use and still needs work. I've been frustrated by the need to run each check separately on book-length documents. Microsoft makes it impossible for me to report issues with PerfectIt because it asks me to send my documents to them. My clients' work is proprietary and that's not possible—a problem many editors have. I hope Intelligent Editing and Microsoft will continue to work to make PerfectIt Cloud for Mac better. More and more editors are using Macs and this is essential.

Pros

I love the addition of the Chicago Manual of Style function in PerfectIt. It is helping me catch more issues than in the past and as an editor, I'm thrilled to now have this function.

Cons

PerfectIt Cloud for Mac continues to be buggy, laggy, and hard to use on book-length documents on Macs. Checking hyphenation requires running the tests individually or else PerfectIt shows that it caught nothing. If you are using a Mac, be sure to run each test individually. But when checking Brackets and Quotes Left Open, try running it both separately and along with one other test because it sometimes won't work when you run it alone. The italics checker does not seem to work on my Mac and often freezes up or the ball just spins for an hour.

### "Best editing tool out for the money and ease of use"

April 8, 2022

5.0

I've been happy with this product since the beginning. It's economical and efficient and I am much more confident that my edits are good when I use this tool before returning it the work to my clients. A vast improvement over spell checking! In my own work, my confidence level is high that I've turned in a very clean product.

Pros

This product is pretty easy to use. The installation is simple with the wizard and it adds easily to Word software so it's always ready to use. I love being able to customize what I want PI to look for in the work I'm editing because there are big differences between editing fiction and non-fiction works.

Cons

Originally, I needed to have a CMOS subscription as well but with the new version, I have a CMOS option built into PerfectIt so I don't need both. I keep a current hard copy of the Chicago Manual of Style in my reference library in the office, but I no longer have to buy the subscription to it as well. Time and money saver.

### "PerfectIt - An essential tool for anyone editing digital texts"

May 10, 2022

5.0

Overall, my experience of the product has been very positive. I consider it an essential part of my editorial toolkit and have recommended it to other editors and even publications managers. It should never be thought of as a substitute for manual editing, but, along with Word's own in-built tools (or whatever word processing program one uses), it is an essential component of professional editing. It took me over two years to realize that the default setting is to not include bibliographies and footnotes in the checker. While I acknowledge that that is a user deficiency rather than a problem with the product, perhaps that could be made more clearly? I encourage new users to explore and play with the features before using proper, something I should have done more of. I should also point out that I have no real experience of competitor products, aside from Editorium, which is useful but can do other tasks (such as formatting). As a consistency checker, I have found that PerfectIt fits the bill and I have never had need to go seeking out alternatives. Customer support is always very quick and efficient too, as well as a human touch rather than a nameless administrator. Finally, it should always be borne in mind that PerfectIt does not replace editing. But it is a highly useful tool to supplement it and (like macros) does a lot of the heavy lifting and routine tasks that consume so much time when editing a long document. It is well worth the money.

Pros

I love the integration with Chicago Manual of Style. Very useful in my job. I also love that you can created and use your own style templates. The style points (serial commas, -ize endings, symbols, currencies, etc.) in the Settings are comprehensive and pick up most things you would look for when checking a text for conformity with a consistent style. Some of the other features (wildcards, fine-tuning, etc.) I don't even use, but it is great to know there is more to explore and use to service my editing work.

Cons

In upgrading last year, I lost a few style templates I had created. However, customer support was very helpful and besides, it does not take long to recreate a style template. Perhaps more could be added (e.g. based on Oxford Hart's Rules for instance)? I created my own which did not take long. I am also not convinced that every single instance of a word is picked up in a given check. I have sometimes checked this by doing it manually and found a few instances have not been picked up. That might be something to do with the codes the software uses (I have zero knowledge in the technical aspects), but it doesn't pose too big a problem because PerfectIt will pick up things you can then check manually yourself. And it will almost certainly always pick up things you won't have spotted yourself.

### "A truly useful tool"

July 12, 2022

5.0

My work is more polished for using PerfectIt. It picks up and resolves small things I might otherwise overlook over the course of book-length projects. Running it twice on a manuscript is useful--once at the start and again at the end--as it helps first by resolving the "big things" (punctuation and spellings) and then by resolving the "little things" (errors introduced or inconsistencies overlooked in heavily edited passages). It is also always worth running on chapter-length documents--as long as one takes the time to document one's decisions on a project style sheet so that one can make the same choices for subsequent chapters. Now that I've used this software for a couple of years, I do not not want to be without it!

Pros

PerfectIt is an excellent tool to assist the user in imposing consistency across large projects. For example, it searches for words with variant spellings, capitalizations, and hyphenations and allows one to resolve variations one-by-one (or all at once). Each error is displayed in context, and the software enables one to navigate to each occurrence in the document so one can assess and address each case as necessary. It does the same with variant punctuation conventions or treatments of numerals and use of acronyms. Further, all changes can be redlined, and a summary of changes is generated at the end. This list can be copied and/or printed for reference (should one need to do so). One also has the ability to set up individual style sheets to reflect different presses' preferences (useful for freelance copyeditors). The ability to link the software to one's Chicago Manual of Style account (and use the affiliated style preferences/style sheet) is an added bonus.

Cons

The software is somewhat intuitive--but to get the most value from it, the online tutorials are essential. The wildcard searches (and support videos teaching one how to run them) are great--but require a time commitment to learn how to implement them effectively. It is worth taking the time to learn. Use the tutorials! A person who is more comfortable (than I am) with wildcard searches (or writing Word macros of their own) will able to maximize the utility of this software.

### "PerfectIt is essential to my work process! "

December 14, 2022

5.0

My experience with PerfectIt has been great. I use it all the time and I keep renewing my subscription!

Pros

I use PerfectIt on documents that I've already edited. It checks for consistency. As an editor who wants to give my clients papers as perfect as I can, consistency is crucial! I run the documents through the program to catch style errors that I missed, punctuation errors, missing quotation marks, words spelled in two ways, etc. I also use it to remove two spaces, extra paragraphing. It's essential to my work and it's the final stage of my work. So using PerfectIt also means I'm done with a project and that's a good feeling!

Cons

PerfectIt comes with some styles, such as Chicago Style. It also allows you to add your own styles, and some people also have shared their style templates for PerfectIt. I really wish that PerfectIt would come with all the styles. I use AP at times and PerfectIt doesn't have AP style, which is frustrating. Of course I could create my own AP style template to add to PerfectIt.

### "PerfectIt - My eyes and my right hand"

February 8, 2022

5.0

I have a very good experience with PerfectIt. I know the documents I send to my clients have the quality they expect. If my deliverable is a manuscript for publication, I don't recall any comments from editors and Journal reviewers regarding grammar, style, or editing errors.

Pros

Once I paid my first license some 4 years ago, it took just a minute to start using it. No problems with installation and very easy to use. Part of my job is medical writing, both the writing itself and performing quality control of documents written by others. I use PerfectIt for the last "polishing" before submitting manuscripts to Journals and for reviewing study protocols as well as complex documents, such as clinical study reports (CSRs). I would never find all inconsistencies in CSRs - they are hundreds of pages long, with dozens of tables, figures, listings, numbered and bulleted items. PerfectIt is totally reliable in finding them and giving me edit options. To stay productive, I usually run the checks on one computer and do something else on another one to use the waiting time.

Cons

Honestly, I cannot think about anything I don't like about PerfectIt. It's a great fit for my needs.

### "PerfectIt – Indispensable software for editors!"

December 13, 2022

5.0

PerfectIt saves me a lot of time overall in my editing. It easily complements Microsoft Word and other software for editors. I would not be without it.

Pros

PerfectIt is hands down my most useful and most used software as an editorial services provider. I use it to quickly clean up texts ready for proofing or copyediting and then use it for a final sweep to check for anything I might have missed. It is very easy to use, with a good range of style sheets already built in meaning you can download it and use it straightaway. There are also lots of free video tutorials helping with both basic and more advanced features of PerfectIt.However, the most useful feature for me is being able to input my own style sheets, which saves me a lot of time when working with repeat clients. I have also found the integration with The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) useful, saving me extra time when working on CMOS-based texts. The free trial is generous, with all the features available for 14 days, and the annual subscription is also very reasonable, especially given the regular-ish updates. I have only had to contact customer services once with a problem, and this was dealt with quickly and efficiently.

Cons

The only thing missing is a check for references. I work with a lot of academic texts, and I would find this useful – even if it was just a brief check for inconsistencies. Perhaps more updates would also be good, although at this price point, there is more than ample going on in the background. It would also be great to be able to use PerfectIt with PDFs in Adobe or Google Docs.

### "PerfectIt for professionalism"

October 7, 2022

5.0

PerfectIt definitely increases an editor's professionalism towards the client. No unnecessary spacing, all brackets are closed, correct spelling throughout, consistent capitalization, and many more advantages. The client receive a document that is consistent and professional. Not one document will be sent to the client without running it through PerfectIt, as it provides confidence in knowing that the client can be assured that the document has all the t's crossed and i's dotted.

Pros

Especially in long documents, this product ensures consistency throughout. It is easy to use and helps ensure that those fine details are attended to and not overlooked. It is easy to customize your settings and you have control over what you want to be checked. This is the easiest software to understand and use without worries.

Cons

However, on a few occasions, PerfectIt seems to miss some checks or skip them occasionally, but because of the time spent on the document, one is aware or becomes aware and can fix them after the check.

### "An Essential Tool for the Editor"

September 3, 2020

5.0

To the extent that I have experienced any technical issues with the software, and they have been negligible in the years that I have used it, customer service has been flawless and the problem is resolved almost immediately. There are no products like it on the market. Many attempts have been made to copy it, but they uniformly suggest changes that would introduce errors into the manuscript at worst and suggest changes in the name of concision that would strip the work of its soul at best.

Pros

PerfectIt continues to be one of the wisest business purchases for the editor. This cunning software ensures consistently throughout the manuscript and automates many tasks that would otherwise take longer. Further, PerfectIt spotted the typo "shit" for "shift" in a Workers' Compensation evaluation, and so it paid for itself on the spot. I am sure I would have found it, but industry standard means that editors catch 95% of errors. I charge by the hour for forensic reports, so this software saves my clients money. I charge fiction and other projects by the word, so this saves me time and increases my hourly rate for those projects. Even though I do a lot of structural and line editing, I rely on this software to spot inconsistencies in queries as a diagnostic for the author and to ensure that place names, character names, and similar are consistently spelled so as to avoid introducing errors into the manuscript. It also helps me spot the author's style choices.

Cons

The only thing missing is APA 7. It would be helpful to have this style guide since I rely on it and CMOS almost exclusively. Even with that omission, PerfectIt is excellent.

Reason for choosing PerfectIt

PerfectIt works without my risking introducing problems into the manuscript.

### "Essential software for copy-editiors"

5.0

This has really improved my editing, and means I can be confident that I am not sending work back to clients with minor but potentially problematic inconsistencies and errors that are a pain to check for manually

Pros

This software is an absolute must for any professional copy-editors. It's great at spotting all the small errors that creep in and are hard to keep track of over a lengthy document, such as inconsistent hyphenation, incorrectly placed or repeated definitions for abbreviations, etc. Saves a lot of work and makes you look better to your clients.

Cons

It would be nice if they made a Mac version of PerfectIt classic. The cloud version works for Mac, but some clients/companies won't allow its use given it sends data to the cloud which could violate their confidentiallity agreements. Otherwise, it's great software.

### "A must-have for any professional editor"

5.0

PerfectIt saves time. I run it before anything else on a manuscript, and a final time at the end before sending it back to a client. It kickstarts my style sheets, takes care of thousands of issues in a single clicks, and it’s intuitive to use.

Pros

Hyphenation and capitalization checks, and its link to CMOS.

Cons

If the CMOS section could be paired with the various English variations, it would be helpful, since going CMOS for one round then subsequently needing to run the Canadian English check does produce different results.

### "A Proofreader's Sanity Saviour"

5.0

Wouldn't be without it.

Pros

Takes the stress out of my job and is so easy to use. I run PerfectIt as a first and final check when copyediting and/or proofreading. Options for setting up different dictionaries for English variants (British, US, Canadian) and/or client-specific vocabulary.

Cons

Takes time initially to set up PerfectIt (lots of decisions to make) and then for each client-specific dictionary and English-language variant, unless you use their pre-loaded dictionary options.
