### "PerfectIt - aptly named"

May 23, 2022

5.0

As an editor/proofreader and copywriter with clients across Europe, I really couldn't do my job as well as I do without PerfectIt. My work is highly regarded by academic authors, publishers and commercial businesses alike. It also helps me to work more efficiently.

Pros

I don't use all features, but in my work it is worth every cent just for catching inconsistencies. I often work with multi-authored documents, so this is especially useful. Also, it doesn't try to tell me what to do - it suggests that I consider what it has picked up, so I can make the right decisions.

Cons

I did have some issues with it crashing, especially on longer documents. I overcame this my running only a few tests at a time, but reported it to Customer Services who found a bug. They are very helpful and react quickly to solve issues.

### "Valuable Tool for Court Reporters, Scopists, and Trandscript Proofreaders"

January 19, 2023

5.0

As a transcript proofreader for court reporters, I use Word and PerfectIt to "prep" the transcript for me to read and perform some initial checks on the transcript. For my purposes, the ability to create/customize style sheets and the consistency checks are what set PerfectIt apart.Court reporters record speech verbatim. Punctuation is critical to the accuracy and readability of their finished product; grammar, not so much. Because of this, court reporters follow style guides that differ from those most writers employ. PerfectIt's style customization allows me to create style sheets based upon those specialized style guides. The consistency checks have caught things I'm sure I (and most of the proofers I know) would have missed in my reading. For example, in a 400-page transcript, if the abbreviation R.N. is used 14 times and RN is used once, I may or may not catch it -- but PerfectIt will.Overall, the addition of PerfectIt to my proofreading workflow has, I'm sure, improved the quality of my work. And in a field where reputation among a relatively small community (stenographers in the U.S.) correlates to income, any edge helps.

Pros

For my purposes of proofreading verbatim proceedings transcripts for stenographers, my use of PerfectIt only scratches the surface when it comes to its functionality. There are two features that speed up my preparation of a transcript for me to read: consistency checks and customizable style sheets.

Cons

I think creating and editing style sheets could be a bit more intuitive. I figured it out, but it took some trial and error to figure out how to categorize the task/check I want performed. For example, I'd expect spelling peculiarities to be added under "Preferred Spelling," but depending on how I want it handled, it might have to go under "Spelling Variations."

### "A reliable extra pair of eyes that saves time and is invaluable for issues of consistency."

January 27, 2022

5.0

I was initially sceptical, as I find most of the spellcheck and grammar check softwares are not really much interest to me. I already know how to write a half-decent text. PerfectIt isn't trying to teach me how to write, it is simply checking that I'm doing the best job I can in terms of little details that otherwise take an awful lot of time to check: consistency within the text, particular styleguide indiosyncracies, local language rules, etc.

Pros

By identifying issues – and potential issues – that would take me quite a long time to do by myself, it takes care of some of the nuts and bolts of the text, and allows me to do what I am good at, which is to work on the quality of the language, and making the very best of the text in front of me.

Cons

I have had no issues with any downsides - and the customer service has been truly excellent.

Reason for choosing PerfectIt

It seemed (and is) a tool designed to help people who were already skilled and competent at writing and editing, rather than holding the hands of relative beginners in the field.

### "Invaluable for editors"

June 8, 2022

5.0

I see this as essential software for editing, copyediting, and proofreading. There's nothing else quite like it on the market. I love it and can't imagine going back to life without it.

Pros

PerfectIt is thorough and flexible, suitable for a large range of projects. It's a huge timesaver for standardization of large book projects, multiple-author texts, and conversion between different house styles, where tiny details matter. The customizable style sheets are fantastic and enable me to flag project-specific issues. Support is excellent. I have been using it for four years now, and I have never had a problem that wasn't promptly solved.

Cons

Honestly, I can't think of any real cons for this software. It's excellent. I guess the more advanced features can present a bit of a steep learning curve, but support is good and it's well worth taking the time.

### "Great add-on to my MS Word software."

March 9, 2022

5.0

Overall, it has sped up my legal writing tremendously. As a contract attorney, it's important to get the most work done in the least amount of time and turn out a quality work product. PerfectIT has allowed me to do just that.

Pros

When I'm in a writing fury, I don't usually worry about the niceties of technical English language and legal style. However, PerfectIt lets me forget about those issues while I am writing my work and then picks up the arduous task of proofing and correcting my grammar, spelling, and punctuation that gets lost in the fugue of writing. It's worked really well for me because it allows me to concentrate on the message I'm trying to get across.

Cons

I'd really like to see a legal style tailored to the California legal style manual. Of course, California just has to have its own legal style that departs from the Bluebook style that we all learn in law school so it would be nice to have a specific style manual for state-specific styles in legal writing.

### "Great product, especially now that CMOS is involved!"

March 15, 2022

5.0

PerfectIt is key when it comes to consistency. I'm sure it will always need fine-tuning, but I love how much more confident I can feel that I've done my best to improve the manuscripts' quality, even if it's simply by making word choices and style choices more consistent.

Pros

I love the style sheet capability and LOVE that CMOS is integrated now. The fact that it shows the rule to back up the feedback is my favorite!

Cons

I really wish it caught more homophones/homographs and incorrect word choices. I hate it when Grammarly catches a "through" when the author meant "though" but PI doesn't. Because PI is far superior. But it doesn't do a lot of actual spell checking, and I wish it did. That and the serial comma feature. I want to use it, but it finds every contraction and decides it needs a serial comma. Almost. It's just too overwhelming and finds more areas where a list isn't involved than those when one is.

Reason for choosing PerfectIt

Many recommendations, mostly. Grammarly, I still use, but it's horrible software with much to be desired. I use it only because it does catch some things that PI doesn't. ProWriting Aid seemed too time-consuming to use, and I love that PI categorizes the issues it searches for, so I can focus on one problem at a time.

### "A Simple but Powerful Tool"

June 19, 2022

5.0

My experience in using PerfectIt has been most valuable

Pros

Simplicity of this tool makes it easy to learn and use. As an editor, it saves my time in reviewing and editing documents and reports in various stages of production. The ability to quickly perform a summary of much needed changes and improvements around consistency and style are extremely useful, saving much time.

Cons

The overall graphics could be more appealing to keep abreast of other emerging products in this field

### "An excellent aid to ensuring consistency "

April 12, 2022

5.0

Pros

Disclaimer: I have been offered a discount in exchange for my honest review of this product. All views are my own and are based on my use of the product over the last 5 years. PerfectIt is an indispensable tool for proofreaders and editors. Its consistency checking is excellent and its customisable style sheets are very useful. The product saves me a lot of time and means that I can concentrate more on reading for sense than on manual checking for issues such as missing brackets or inconsistent spellings.

Cons

It can take a little time to set up custom style sheets, but once you have them in place you can use them every time you work with a particular client or house style. The time investment is definitely worth it.

### "PerfectIt has allowed me to increase my productivity and increase return business. "

May 7, 2022

5.0

I have return business, which I believe, is based on my writing clarity and brevity. When compared to my cohort, I consistently requested to review and compare/contrast with others writing. PerfectIt aids with consistency and style.

Pros

Easy to use, PerfectIt provides a systematic and detailed review of each document. I write different types of reports and therefore have different requirements. Regardless of what changes are needed between client to client, PerfectIt remains a consistent reviewer.

Cons

I would like integration with .pages. I also find that certain jargon continues to raise flags in PerfectIt; I wish I could place a " or \* at the start and end of a section which then would be ignored.

### "Consistency with a click"

March 8, 2022

5.0

Pros

As an editor with 20 years of experience, I can confidently say that consistency is the hardest part of editing. Making sure two-word, hyphenated, and one-word expressions are each presented the same way each time takes up a lot of my time, as does making sure heading and subheading carry the right casing style. PerfectIt checks for these things after I have, acting as a solid backup to my skills. It often catches some little things I missed, which ensures my reputation remains untarnished.

Cons

As a business editor, it would be very helpful if PerfectIt worked with other platforms than Word. PowerPoint is still a favorite of business writers, and being able to double-check presentations would be a boon.

### "A must for every writer, editor, and proofreader."

May 29, 2022

5.0

This program was a huge eye opener. I'm so glad someone recommended I add it to my arsenal, and it's become a must-use for me.

Pros

I really like that I can choose what NOT to check. For example: I edit a lot of fiction, so there are A LOT of contractions. The fact that I can choose NOT to look for them is a huge time-saver. It's also a fabulous tool to ensure I'm consistent.

Cons

I wish it were more functional with my Mac. I bought a Windows laptop (which I detest) to take advantage of the functions unavailable to me when I'm using my Macbook Pro, which is my preferred computer. Having the full power of PerfectIt available for Apple users would be amazing,

### "PerfectIt - an integral part of an editor's toolkit"

March 8, 2022

5.0

An extremely useful and wise tool. All well-designed tools shouldn't 'get in the way' of the work in hand. A good tool should become a seamless extension of the hand or mind of the user. PerfectIt does this extremely well, and keeps the editor in control of the editing process rather than taking editing decisions out of the hand of the editor. A smart, humble tool, that recognises that its job is to assist and not replace, the editor.

Pros

That it leaves the decisions up to the editor - it does not make changes automatically, but rather flags issues, inconsistencies, and anomalies which the editor then has to deal with.

Cons

It would be nice to be able to identify and then perhaps remove multiple spaces, where the writer has inserted blanks rather than using Tab or Enter. But this is not a critical need.

### "A must-buy for all editors"

May 10, 2022

5.0

I have been using PerfectIt since it first launched for the Cloud (the only option for Mac users without setting up Parallels) and was using the cutdown version, Consistency Checker, before that from the moment it became available. As an editor, I cannot imagine working without PerfectIt now: it saves me both time and mental energy, and frequently catches mistakes that had slipped past me. At the same time, I know that I am always in control of changes and can apply my hard-won editorial knowledge to make sensible decisions about the issues that PerfectIt throws up. I have been particularly delighted in the last year to be able to access the new Chicago Manual of Style style sheet, which I use on any project where CMOS is the necessary style; its accuracy and the helpful links to the relevant sections of the manual have been phenomenally useful.

Pros

PerfectIt is a godsend for editors. It picks up all kinds of inconsistencies that the human brain might miss, but, crucially, it gives the user control over what to change and what to leave the same. It doesn't make erroneous grammar suggestions like many editing apps do, but allows the trained editor to use their judgement at all times.

Cons

There is nothing I don't like about PerfectIt. The only thing I would wish for is that there was a standalone version available for Macs, so that I could generate my own style sheets.

### "The best Word editor out there"

April 8, 2022

5.0

Since finding it and using the free version, I happily paid to use it. And use it I do - daily!

Pros

I love the flexibility of PerfectIt and the endless means of creating several house styles. I also have fully embraced the inclusion of Chicago Manual in the program, making it many times easier to edit content for not only individual house styles, but standardized styles as well. It's the first thing I install on my computer when reformatting (after Office of course), and I always recommend it to fellow editors.

Cons

The add-on in Word can be finicky at first, but once it's installed and running it's fantastic.

### "Essential tool for proofreaders"

September 20, 2020

5.0

PerfectIt enables me to deliver a top quality service to my customers. I especially use PerfectIt to check for inconsistencies in very large documents. I couldn't go without it.

Pros

I like its ability to detect inconsistencies, and as I often proofread academic articles, how PerfectIt determines where abbreviations should be spelled out and where only the abbreviation should be used. The most useful feature for me is that it tells you how many occurrences there are of spelling version A and how many of version B, giving you the option to select the version of your preference and making the changes, either one by one, or to all occurrences simultaneously.

Cons

There isn't anything I dislike. I just wished I had more time to study its many features that I haven't explored yet. I haven't looked into creating my own style guides, which is probably quite easy. I also wished that, in the case of abbreviations, PerfectIt would pick up that an abbreviation should be spelled out once in the abstract and once again in the main part of the text, but I understand that this may be very difficult to achieve. On a positive note, when PerfectIt picks up the abbreviations, it allows you to scroll through all the occurrences and check where the abbreviations appear in the text. It is easy to make changes where necessary.

Reason for choosing PerfectIt

PerfectIt is far more superior across the board. No comparison. I find Grammarly totally unreliable.

### "The Best Consistency Checker I've Used"

April 27, 2022

5.0

PerfectIt saves me approximately 20 hours per manuscript and helps me ensure consistency in all of my clients' work.

Pros

I love that PerfectIt allows me to check and change every instance of a possible error at the same time. Here's one example: a client had approximately 20 instances of one spelling error. Two seconds after that dialog box popped up, they were all fixed. Mentally repeat that about 50 times, and you can see how much time is saved on each manuscript. And that's just one kind of error!

Cons

I hate that it no longer checks for the serial (Oxford) comma. That is really important and should be brought back immediately. This is my only complaint.

### "Liking the PerfectIt Windows Edition"

April 2, 2022

It makes my editing more efficient by finding inconsistencies.

Pros

I find PerfectIt easy to use and combine it with other editorial productivity tools. I sometimes run PerfectIt before I begin editing a manuscript and other times, it's the final application I run on an edited manuscript. It has helped make my work more efficient because it automates repetitive editing tasks.

Cons

I have been playing around with the Chicago Manual of Style consistency check, which is a new tool for me. There is nothing I don't like about PerfectIt.

### "Easy to use and very customizable"

October 11, 2022

5.0

The Wildcard option lets me search for project- or client-specific issues and change them so easily. I could write it into a macro, but the cost is definitely worth it so that I can skip that step. One way I use PerfectIt, to show its versatility, is to edit HTML code. There are so many opportunities for bothersome artifacts of old content, for seemingly unexplained nonconformity of style, etc. PerfectIt works with any kind of text, so it's just as good for code as anything else.

Pros

I use this software as a primary check for my editorial work, but my favorite way to use PerfectIt is as an alternative to writing macros.

Cons

Some parts are less user-friendly than I'd prefer. For example, I couldn't get "Sections to Skip" to work right away. The UI is good but has room for improvement across most aspects.

### "Legal transcription final check"

October 23, 2022

4.0

PerfectIt has been a game changer for me. I used to just use MS Word spelling and grammar checker. Then I added in Grammarly, which is very tedious. And now I also use PerfectIt. It finds so many inconsistencies with hundreds of pages of documents. It's very quick and easy to make multiple changes at once.

Pros

I love the consistency checker. It shows when the same word is inconsistently capped throughout the document. It's just a quick click to change them all or I can click and go to each occurrence quickly.

Cons

The need to custom code the variations of detailed checks.

### "An essential tool for writers and editors of all types"

October 16, 2021

5.0

PerfectIt saves me a LOT of time while copyediting. I used to have an exhaustive list of find/replace items that were common to certain authors I'd worked with, or writers in general. PerfectIt allows me to customize style sheets so it does the labor in a fraction of the time without the laborious back and forth of doing it manually (and still missing a possible variation in spelling or heading style).

Pros

The customizable styles are my favorite part. I work with a variety of fiction authors, and each one has their own world-building and style preferences to keep track of. PerfectIt makes this a lot faster on the front end before I begin to read, and as a finish check when I complete an edit.

Cons

There are occasions when it misses things, but overall I have no complaints for how often I use it.

### "PerfectIt Is an Essential Editing Tool"

November 21, 2022

5.0

My experience has been excellent. It's made my editing nearly flawless.

Pros

For my work in editing online university courses with hundreds of pages of text, PerfectIt's most important feature is consistency checking in style, spelling, punctuation, and formatting. It's also great at finding any typos and errors. It's very easy to use, and the \_Chicago Manual of Style\_ plugin works seamlessly with PerfectIt and makes it easy to conform to Chicago style.

Cons

Frankly, I wish it were magical, and could create Chicago, MLA, and APA style bibliographies, but other than that, it's great.

Reason for choosing PerfectIt

I'd heard through the editors' grapevine that it wasn't even worth trying other editing software, particularly for academic editing. And with some brief experimentation, I found that to be true.

### "Can you put a price on peace of mind?"

February 8, 2022

5.0

The software pays for itself many times over in the course of a year. Highly recommended.

Pros

The relentless consistency checks are a godsend. As a freelance copy-editor, I work on many different types of text for a number of different clients/publishers who have different requirements. I use PI to do an initial check of a text and find out what's there and what is likely to need fixing. The 'mechanical' issues are the ones that require consistency, and once PI has helped to sort those I can focus on the 'proper' job of editing the meat of the text. It saves a great deal of time. I tend to work on longer texts, so I use it less frequently, but it is all the more useful over a long text.

Cons

As a user of Word on a PC, I'm in the core user bracket. It loads into Word seamlessle and works well.

### "I adore this software and recommend it to anyone who writes."

June 29, 2022

5.0

Wonderful. Best software I've bought and worth every penny.

Pros

PerfectIt is easy to use and set up. You can create your own Style Sheets, which is so useful in the publishing industry. The speed it carries out the required edits is brilliant and saves me so much time.

Cons

I honestly can't say... Whenever I've had a question or something go wrong, it's typically been my 'fault' for not being able to find it and as soon as I post in the Facebook group or send an official problem ticket to PI, the issues is resolved almost immediately.

Reason for choosing PerfectIt

So much more superior.

### "Invaluable software for proofreaders and editors"

May 24, 2022

5.0

PerfectIt has made my job as an editor and proofreader far more efficient. Alongside macros, I have come to see it as an essential part of my toolkit, and one that I can count on to do a lot of the consistency checks that take up so much time when editing a large document. Obviously, nothing beats the human eye, but as a starting point and again as a final check after an edit/proofread, it’s invaluable. The online tutorials are particularly useful and illustrate just how user friendly the software is.

Pros

Being able to create my own style sheets or customise existing ones – which doesn’t take long to do – has been invaluable for me as I work on several different book series, each with its own vocabulary and style preference. Having a customer-specific style sheet in place saves time every time I work with a returning client. A company I worked with have even bought their own subscription, so impressed were they at being able to set the style preferences for their organisation.

Cons

On occasion, I spot errors when I complete my edit that I think PerfectIt should have picked up, but these are few and far between, and it may well be that I need to tweak my style sheets to make sure they capture everything.
