May 27, 2022 5.0 I love it--I run it at the beginning and end of every editing job and it has saved me hundreds of hours, at least, over the years (and caught issues I'd never have caught myself). Practically anything you find yourself always having to look up (e.g. the difference between complement and compliment) or find that your eyes aren't good at catching (like rein/reign, form/from, or solider/soldier) is something that PI can be customized to help you with. It's easy to load different style sheets (premade or custom), so you can switch seamlessly between US/UK English and between different style guides. It's much more than a consistency checker. Pros I love the customizable checks and the CMoS integration. Cons It glitches now and then (but usually turning the computer off and on again fixes the problem, and customer support is excellent), and some features that can't be customized are ones I'd like to be able to customize (e.g. I'd like to have it spell out numbers larger than 100, and ignore a space before a period if what follows the period is a numeral and thus a decimal). I frequently edit long academic articles co-written by teams of researchers, and PerfectIt quickly finds the inconsistencies in word use, spelling and punctuation that are easy to overlook. I run it when I first start a job and again at the end to make sure I've caught everything. And whenever I've had questions,\[SENSITIVE CONTENT\] and his team have been quick to respond and truly helpful. PerfectIt is a super tool! Pros PerfectIt is super easy to use; I love that it integrates into Word. Even an eagle-eyed editor can miss inconsistencies, so I love that PerfectIt can find them for me (especially in very long texts). I've created my own style sheets for certain clients, which means I don't have to remember all their terminology preferences. Overall, it's a simple tool that delivers clear and helpful results with very little effort on my part. Cons I generally have no complaints. It's intuitive, easy to use, and fast. Pros PerfectIt is fast, accurate, and makes no changes without my approval. I'm able to edit far faster and more thoroughly using PerfectIt than I could without it. The complexity of the scientific papers I edit requires concentration on the meaning, and having the mundane, repetitive work done by PerfectIt frees me up to concentrate on clarifying the language. Cons PerfectIt was very easy to integrate with my existing business processes. An area that could be improved is the process of blending styles. Also, locating the style files on my computer to move them into different directories could be made easier. Another improvement would be to enable adding to the built-in list of scientific measures (mm, kW, mL, etc.) so they're recognized when adding a nonbreaking space before them. Pros I like the consistency checking and all the features to clean up my writing. removing unnecessary spaces, consistency in hyphens, smart caps etc, I use all these tools Cons My workflow is to use Grammerly on my document and then PerfectIT, I review and update and modify my document and repeat Grammarly and PerfectIT. I believe both are a perfectit match. With CMO I now have added standardization to my writing. I wonder if an integrated PerfectIT/Grammerly tool would help reduce my editing time? Cons It's probably my own inexpertise, but I really can't get my customizing to work seamlessly. I really just have to go look at the videos again, but it's a little frustrating. The level of support and teaching available with this product is unmatched though--so, quite literally it's my own laziness that is not allowing me to get to the full potential on this! I have found the customer support to be good and responsive.The best thing about it is that it is so much FASTER than running the same checks manually, and it doesn't forget to do any of them. Cons Setting up a style manually is a bit of a pain, and it isn't very intuitive - but luckily I don't have to do that very often. I use PerfectIt to check every translation before I send it to the client, knowing that I have corrected any inconsistencies in spelling, punctuation, and style. PerfectIt makes suggestions, which you can then check out and decide to fix it or ignore it; the user stays in charge. PerfectIt is easy to use and is compatible with MS office. PerfectIt is easy to install, and it is very intuitive to use. It can also be customized for different writing styles. I start every editing project with a quick sweep with PerfectIt. This saves me a lot of time because I don't need to manually check consistency of terminology, spelling, or punctuation. It also checks that headings are consistent and that the figures and tables are all labeled. I also like the acronym check, which is another timesaver. I wrap up each edit with a final PerfectIt sweep to make sure no new inconsistencies were introduced during editing and the formatting is good to go. Pros I primarily use PerfectIt because it gives me confidence that my documents have consistent style, punctuation, and that all the acronyms are introduced appropriately. I think it gives my work the extra polish that my clients look for. Cons So far, I haven’t found anything to complain about. No software is without the occasional glitch, but what makes PerfectIt stand out is their customer support and follow-up if there is ever an issue. I use it on every manuscript I work on and it is an essential tool for any editor or proof reader. The new collaboration with the Chicago Manual of Style is the icing on the cake! Pros Perfectit has saved me countless hours in my editing and proofreading work over the three or four years I have been using it, and for me, time is money. I can also rest easy knowing that nothing has been missed, which inevitably happens with fallible humans. For me, the ability to create and save styles for individual clients is a godsend, and the fact that I can drill down to the smallest detail makes the software flexible and useful for any kind of text. Cons Occasionaly there are glitches, as with any software, and with complex or chunky manuscripts it sometimes runs rather slowly, but with the excellent support and backup from the team, and the Facebook user's page no problem is insurmountable! I literally use this software on every project that passes through my hands, and it gives me a great deal of confidence, knowing I don't need to stress about smaller issues. Pros The new Chicago Manual of Style add-on is an absolute game-changer. While it's wise to be familiar with the style guide, this function virtually eliminates the need to cross-reference, and it actually draws attention to issues that you may not have been aware of. Cons As one of my larger clients is a scientific journal, I wish there was more customization in the technical aspects. It would be nice to be able to identify things such as sentences and paragraphs beginning with a numeral, better identification of numbers being expressed in written or digit form when they're followed by a unit or not (as I find many are missed or it draws my attention instead to correct examples), and spacing around units (e.g., 12 mL vs. 12mL). In addition, I'd love for it to identify unusual capitalizations, as sometimes authors will capitalize words by mistake when there's no need for it. That would be a great additional check. I love it. Pros I use PerfectIt when I edit the submissions from our members for our annual anthology. Each author may have a preferred style, but consistency across the submissions is often more important than maintenance of any individual's preferences. PerfectIt allows me to point to a standard that isn't my favorite or someone's favorite, but an industry standard. It's much easier to explain my edits when I explain this to the authors. And what is especially helpful to my firm—having government departments and medical organizations as clients—is PerfectIt’s treatment of abbreviations. PerfectIt not only finds abbreviations used only once and abbreviations that appear before their expanded term or have not been defined at all, it also provides a comprehensive list of abbreviations in a file. Cons My business hasn't had any real problems with this software. I worried that it would hard to link my longtime CMoS account with PerfectIt, but it was easy. Cons The only con to the union of CMoS and PerfectIt is how long we had to wait for it! I copyedit scholarly and academic materials, and it has helped me find innumerable tiny omissions, making my edits more complete. I absolutely love the ability to choose "Fix" or "Skip" with every suggestion. So easy to use. Wonderful product. Pros I am a highly detailed copyeditor. I notice things that others don't notice in almost every area of life. I was shocked at how many things PerfectIt picked up in my documents that I hadn't seen. I'm talking about very small details. It has educated me by helping me see areas that I tend to overlook when I'm working too quickly. And most of all, it is fun to use. After a long, hard copyediting job, it's quite entertaining to run a document through PerfectIt and see what I've missed. I am always satisfied that it has greatly improved my final copyedited document. Cons It brings up quite a few "issues" that I end up skipping over, because my documents often have quirks that do not fit into the standard style patterns. Sometimes this takes more time than I'd like it to. Only other complaint is that when it finds two words that should be hyphenated, if I click on "Fix," in Track Changes it shows that I've changed both the word and the hyphen, when I would prefer that it only highlight the hyphen that has been added.
