Freelance Translator Translation and Localization Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "A Good Addition to an English Translator's Toolkit" January 19, 2022 5.0 I would recommend adding PerfectIt to your toolkit if you are a translator or writer working in English, it is a fast and reliable way of keeping your text typo-free and cohesive, with plenty of customisation options. Pros PerfectIt is easy to set up and use. It integrates seamlessly into Word (although it would be handy if it also worked in Outlook). I like that it offers different language variants, and there are standard styles already created for you to use, or you can customise them and create your own. The spellcheck sometimes picks up different things to Word, which is also convenient as a double check, and I love that you can remove all extra spacing with a click of a button. Cons As a translator working with several languages, I wish it were available in more languages other than English, but I understand that is probably not possible or would be difficult to implement. Pros What I like most is how easy it is to use. I edit full time and use it on every project. Also, I also like that it is customizable. I seldom need to use every feature, so it helps that I can pick and choose. Cons I would like it to check an entire book-length manuscript in one pass. Breaking it up into chunks requires either a great memory so the changes are consistent throughout the ms, or stopping to add changes to a style sheet. Neither option is ideal. Pros It is exceptionally easy to use and provides a great set of statistics and identifications of problem areas. Cons I still wish PerfectIt included reading level and Reading Ease calculations so I'd have everything in one place and report. Pros It expedites my editing and proofreading process. I can choose language preferences and ensure consistency in my manuscripts. It would be tedious to ensure consistency manually because many of the errors would be missed. Cons I wish the software included grammar features as well, just like Grammarly. Reason for choosing PerfectIt It is effective and you can also use it in conjunction with the Chicago Manual of Style and other styles. Pros I like the ability to use this in different dialects, and especially to hunt down feral gaps on the ends of lines and to find inconsistencies in hyphens and spelling. It makes it easy to check on CMOS rules, it saves lots of time, and I learn stuff! Cons I can't of anything I don't like about PerfectIt. It is almost impossible to catch all consistency errors and PerfectIt is a valuable time saver. Cons Very sensitive to large documents and documents on the edge of corruption. Consistency checks are particularly important in my work and there is only so much a human can pick up, the way the different instances are listed is really clear and also easily allows you to only change the relevent issues. For example, 'end-user' as an adjective with a hyphen and 'end user' as a noun with no hyphen. Much better than blanket find and replace where this sort of nuance can easily be missed. Overall it just makes my editing life easier, which makes me very happy. Pros Easy to use, easy to customise, easy to swap between US and UK Spelling, with many other options as well. Even after spellchecks and other grammar checks with other software (as a professional writer, editor, and proofreader, I use many) PerfectIt always manages to find something the others don't. It is extremely easy to use and integrates flawlessly with my word processing program. The program allows you to save custom or "house" styles. I no longer have to spend hours looking out for inconstancies with regard to spelling, hyphenated words and capitalisation etc. PerfectIt highlights anything I have asked it to check; I then add any style decisions to my client's style sheet. Pros Computer technology is not one of my strengths but PerfectIt is easy to use. As a fiction editor, I particularly love the 'Manage Styles' feature that allows me to adapt the style I'm using by leaving out any checks I feel are not necessary for the document I'm working on. I have even created my own style that I use for clients who have have specific style briefs. Cons I honestly cannot think of any negatives for this software. It catches more issues than programs do. When I first tried PerfectIt, I used the FREE version. Because it worked much better than the free version of different programs, I bought it. It’s been an excellent investment in my writing. I highly recommend it. Cons PerfectIt generally takes three clicks to start running the program, whereas it takes only one click for the competitor that spends the most on advertising. It picks up on the mechanical points that I may have easily missed, especially in long documents, so that I can attend more to what the text is communicating. It gives me confidence in my work and saves me so much time! I love the customizable style sheets and am excited that it now has CMOS compatibility. Cons It's like a set of macros with a UI that makes it much easier than programming macros ourselves, so we have to be very specific when we're customizing the style sheets. The software helps me ensure consistency in spelling, treatment of numbers, and hyphenation across long documents, which is crucial to my work as a copy editor. I also like how you can import style sheets and modify and add to them. Cons The software has a lot of powerful features that are not at first intuitive or easy to figure out. It can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but it's worth the learning curve. Pros I love the ability to select all or only some of the checks; for example, when I work with a fiction manuscript, I don't want every contraction called out, but I often do when working with a nonfiction manuscript, so I will select or deselect that option under Spelling. Cons I'm on a Mac, and the features are significantly fewer than for PC. One feature I really wish the Mac version offered is style sheets; they are nonexistent but would be a welcome addition. It's easy to use and I like that I can select different settings depending on the destination of my document. Pros I love that it integrates seemlessly with Word and allows me to verify different documents in different styles so easily. I always run my docs through it before I deliver to my client. Cons Integration into my business processes was super easy and smooth, no problems there. It's sometimes a bit tedious to go through all of the exceptions to the abbreviation rules. Pros Perhaps the most important is checking for spelling for spelling consistency: I deal constantly with the transliteration of Islamicate languages, and PerfectIt always finds inconsistencies that I've missed. Also critical (for this American editor) is ensuring the use of British spelling conventions. PerfectIt also checks for consistent use of parentheses and quotation marks (sometimes inadvertently left open). Cons Nothing springs to mind: the few quibbles I've had have usually been addressed in new releases. I've been using it for several years as an essential last step in the editing process, the "clean sweep" to sort out things that may be missed such as a closing quotations or brackets, style issues, acronyms, spelling issues. It's a good tool to have in the editing toolbox. Very user friendly, responsive, and easy to install. Cons I have not come across any issues, such as the software crashing or freezing. I've tried free trials of similar products, and they just don't compare to PerfectIt. Pros PerfectIt is a must-have for me because it allows me to focus on the content of the material I'm editing. That means I don't have to pay as much attention to mechanical errors because PerfectIt will assist with identifying and correcting those issues. Cons No cons that I can think of. While it does not necessarily pick up incorrect grammar or usage, it does a great job of clearing the text of spelling, hyphenation, punctuation, capitalization and formatting inconsistencies. I also use it to localize large documents to different variants of English, which is an incredible time saver. It's a great tool that helps me deal quickly and efficiently with the more superficial issues in a text so that I can focus on doing a deeper edit.
