It's brilliant at catching mistakes and inconsistencies that I've missed, however careful I have been, but I like the way that it leaves the decision about whether to fix them up to me. As I have very little technical expertise, I haven't fully explored all its features, but even for a non-techie person it's easy to use, as a basic level at least. The customer service is friendly and very fast. Overall, PerfectIt is a hugely worthwhile investment - I definitely wouldn't want to be without it. Cons Nothing, but it would be wonderful to have an add-on based on the Oxford Style Manual (like the one for the Chicago Manual of Style), especially as PI is a UK company (although I don't know what % of users are in the UK). PerfectIt is invaluable for creating style sheets for each one, allowing me to match their style accurately in the text I translate for them. It is also excellent for catching inconsistencies in long documents. Pros It is easy to learn and to use at the most basic level, but is readily customisable. It's a powerful ally for anyone whose business is words. Cons I expected creating my own style sheets to be complicated, but it was actually easy and the process was well and clearly explained in the help available. I have been using PerfectIt for a number of years, and it is now hard for me to imagine doing my job without it. Pros I love the way PerfectIt helps me deliver a more polished, professional document. It is especially good on checking issues of consistency -- in use of acronyms, application of heading styles, writing of numbers, and the like -- which is something other, similar products don't seem to do as well. Cons There have been occasions when I thought PerfectIt missed something or when the application got stuck (if the file was too large or the internet connection inadequate), but these have been few and far between. The built-in checks are great at flagging common issues, and it is easy to set up wildcard searches and creating specific style sheets for my wildly different clients. Cons I can't think of any issues or anything I would report negatively. July 1, 2022 5.0 It's a really useful product that gives me a good overall sense of the issues in a document, and helps me fix them in a very user-friendly way. It's the first tool I use on any manuscript! Pros I love that PerfectIt is integrated into Word, and is simple to use straight away (as opposed to macros, for example, which take some getting used to!). It's also great how you have the choice to "fix" issues directly through PerfectIt as your work through the results, rather than only have them flagged and have to fix each one manually. I love the partnership with CMOS too! Customer service has also been very helpful when I've had any questions. Cons The only very minor thing that springs to mind is that track changes aren't visible while it's on, so I have to double-check I've remember to turn them on before using it. Pros It's incredibly easy to run through a document, even one tens of thousands of words long, to check for consistency in spelling, capitalisation, punctuation, etc. It saves me hours and hours of labour and does the job more thoroughly than I could. Cons I haven't yet found a way to make it completely customisable so that a client's preference to have a fictional character's name spelled a certain way is logged on their style sheet. It is recommended a lot in editing groups and there's a reason for that. It lives up to it's promises and makes the whole process easier. Pros PerfectIt is almost a manditory tool for editors. It allows me to do a final consistancy check of my document and often times picks up things I've missed. It gives me peace of mind knowing that I am sending back a book that has had that final polish. Cons My only 'gripe' is that it picks up 'swear' type words and is constantly asking me if I want to change them. Pros The ease of using PerfectIt is its biggest advantage. The option of using different styles, spellings, and checks as per my choice is the best feature. I have used it for all my documents; large and small. I love the fast turnaround time for checks and the ease of choosing the relevant checks. March 8, 2022 5.0 I do a great deal of self-editing to produce the best work I can before I send my work off to any other editor. PerfectIt is a critical step in the process that saves me weeks of arduous time. Not hours. Weeks. Pros I write and edit works of fiction. PerfectIt allows me to customize my style sheet to honor my particular creative voice as well as the requirements of linguistic best practices. There is a learning curve to customizing the software, which is inevitable in any program that will do a thorough and superb job at a complex task. Still, I was able to begin using it with excellent results immediately, and then take my own time to conform it to my individual needs. I use several good tools in writing and publishing my books, and PerfectIt fills a space among them that is critical and extremely efficient during editing stages. Cons There is nothing I don't like about it. It was excellent to start with, and now, several years later, it has become better and better and I have become better and better at using it. October 28, 2020 5.0 Generally very happy with PerfectIt! and also purchased a copy for a friend. Pros I love that the checks are so granular - - what a huge timesaver! I can select exactly what I want to check, and PerfectIt's suggestions are not buried in a tsunami of other checks and suggestions. For a recent book, many words were correctly presented as both lowercase and capitalized, depending on context. PerfectIt! enabled us to go through the text with great efficiency, ensuring that we had Name where we wanted the cap, and name where we wanted lowercase. Cons For my work, it would be helpful if PerfectIt! both identified potential spelling errors, and also gave me a way to export that list. My most recent editing job involved many Sanskrit words, and each one needed to be checked. PerfectIt! caught some of them. (Example: yoga asana (a pose in yoga) would be yoga aasana (double a at the beginning) in the book, which should present as a spelling error. PerfectIt is excellent at finding all those pesky inconsistencies that slip through MS Word (like toward/towards, gray/grey, etc.). It also finds where quotation marks are missing. It's saved my bacon numerous times. Cons It takes a long time to load. I have no other complaints but need to reach 40 characters. I recommend it to everyone. Pros It is super easy to install and run PerfectIt. I have been using it for at least 10 years from memory. It picks up copy editing inconsistencies that even experienced editors such as myself miss. It's especially useful for long documents. My favourite checks are abbreviations, hyphenations and non-breaking spaces in units. Cons Some times it crashes but the help team are very good in fixing up any issues. I preferred paying the one-off fee that I did years ago - it was SUCH a bargain - and was a bit bummed that they changed to a yearly subscription. But I still pay it as I can't live without it. I recommend it to every editor and proofreader! Running it at the start of a project gives me a good idea of what I can expect during the edit. Running it at the end helps pick up anything I missed during the edit. It helps me identify inconsistent spelling, hyphenation, and number formatting, and lots more. Pros PerfectIt is easy to install and works really well with Word. I can easily switch between styles and I can make my own styles. The consistency checker is a simple way to get used to PerfectIt. The advanced features allow you to make your own styles and customisations. Cons It can be slow on big documents. I'd love to see more collaborations with style guides like APA or New Hart's Rules. This is one aspect of the service I feel far outpaces other similar products and I hope it continues! Pros Such an easy product to use and it picks up all those tiny errors you may miss after a long day editing! I cannot recommend it enough for anyone wishing to easily and quickly enhance the quality of their work. Cons There could be a broader range of checks.
