August 12, 2020 5.0 Pros A proofreader is by nature a meticulous, thorough and conscientious person, so each and every job has been corrected painstakingly to their ultimate ability. However, PerfectIt weeds out every single outstanding fault, including missing closing quotation marks or parentheses, unintentional US English spellings, and even accidental changes in name spellings, for example when Matthew becomes Mathew. It's main benefit is CONSISTENCY across a whole document, however large. It was easy to install, intuitive and easy to use. It's also very cheap! Support is excellent - its designer, \[SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN\], is quick to respond and really helpful. Cons I am a Mac user, and although there is a version for Mac, it is not nearly as effective as the Windows version which incorporates Style Sheets. This would make PerfectIt the most amazing piece of software for the entire editing and publishing world. In spite of this, I still love it and recommend it all the time. Review Source HA Holly A. You don't have record dozens of commands for Word. PerfectIt covers consistency checking and file clean up. It saves me time and energy. It's definitely worth the investment. Pros I love that PerfectIt can review text in US, UK, AU, and CA English. The consistency checker is fabulous and gives users peace of mind. Cons When I'm working in larger documents, my computer will freeze if I try to add a comment to the text while PerfectIt is open. It's not a big deal, and it's easy enough to work around it. Pros Easy to get started. Good customer service. Checks for Chicago Style as well as making sure you're consistently UK or US in your spelling. Cons I'm not in love with subscription pricing--would rather pay once and be done. But the software is updated/improved frequently, so that makes it easier to justify the cost. It also saves time for me and the customer money. Pros PerfectIt acts as a backup editor, especially for those manuscript that you've been looking at way too long and feel like you have eye fatigue on. Absolutely essential for bringing consistency to a manuscript and finding the instances of a style or spelling you've overlooked. Cons I can't really think of any negatives. Pros As a self employed consultant, I rely on PerfectIt to catch mistakes that a self review will frequently miss. PerfectIt is easy to use and improves the quality of my work. Customisable styles ensure I can tailor to software for different clients as each client has their own likes and dislikes with respect to working, acronyms and punctuation. PerfectIt has helped to enhance the quality of my editing services and saved me lots of time in completing projects. Pros PerfectIt serves as my "second pair of eyes." I like the ease of use and the thoroughness of its document review. Cons PerfectIt tends to get stuck during its document review. It just buffers, with no indication of which level(s) of review have been completed. A second problem for me is the limitation on number of pages that can be reviewed at one time. Shortly after, this was recommended through the Editors' Association and the timing was impeccable. It changed my entire process for the better. Pros This software saves me an enormous amount of time and gives me the peace of mind that my documents are perfect. I love the fact that it integrates with a number of style guides. It has made a huge difference in my editing work. Because I am saving myself time I have been able to take on more work and have increased my income. Pros This software saves me so much time and improves accuracy in setting consistency of spellings and styles. I am also able to install some of my publishing clients' styles as well as set my own. I have also installed CMOS, which makes checking styles a breeze. Cons Sometimes not all issues are caught on the first first run and the software has to be run multiple times to catch everything. " February 15, 2022 4.0 I'm sure I'm not using PerfectIt to its fullest potential yet. Because I do mostly developmental edits of book manuscripts, meaning the text will be copy edited and proofread at a later date, I'm not as invested in catching every little inconsistency. But it's nice to know I always have the option to use PerfectIt as part of a final clean-up if the client requests it. Pros I especially like how PerfectIt lets me specify settings for items like numbering or spelling styles, then flags variations. It loaded easily as a Word add-on and is easy to run and make changes as needed. It's a great time saver for final clean-up of edited documents. Cons I have had some problems running PerfectIt with very long and heavily edited documents. The program sometimes seems to stall and eventually stops the check. Review Source KE Kirstie E. Pros For me, this software removes the laborious checks which would be so time-consuming if I completed them manually. This frees up time for high-cognitive tasks such as a critical review of an author's plot or of a student's argumentation. It also gives me the confidence that I've not missed things. I like the fact that you can customise the profiles to suit individual client's style guides. Cons There is nothing I don't like or would want to change about this software, but it has so many features I didn't know about in the beginning so maybe optional training would be good. Editor Publishing Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "A great helping hand" January 18, 2023 4.0 Pros I really like PerfectIt and think it does a good job, catching things at the end of a Word document that I might have missed. I've only used it for basic checks because my clients often have bespoke styles I need to apply myself, but it is really helpful to do a final sweep at the end of editing. Cons However, the one big catch is how long it takes to process/think, which doesn't seem to speed up even if there are 50,000 fewer words. As previously noted, some easily sorted "style choices" – like using a compound word as a modifier and a standalone word, and therefore having it exist in the manuscript as both hyphenated and not hyphenated – come up as contradictions to your set style, and I have to click through quite a lot of those, so I wish the software recognised those and disregarded them. The inability to edit anything coupled with the long wait times for it to finish processing mean it sometimes takes a few hours and if I'm on a tight deadline, I just don't have the time to run it. It is very easy and logical to use Cons I have yet to take advantage of its house style capabilities. That is me not making the time, rather than any fault with the program itself. It has been invaluable to me when editing. I love how customizable it is but you can also integrate it with CMOS now. Pros I love how it catches style changes that thought I had caught all iterations of but missed a few. It also brings style decides to my attention that need to be decided when I run it through a document the first time. I love that it now integrates with The Chicago Manual of Style. Cons Nothing. Okay, so maybe no reader would ever notice that the book has "non-stop" on page 3 and "nonstop" on page 300, but PerfectIt catches that, and so I know, and my repeat clients know, that I'm turning in a job that's as perfect as possible. Which may be one reason they're repeat clients. Pros Using cloud version is very easy. Software identifies issues and allows for rapid correction in the text. Knowing the app will catch almost all inconsistencies and errors means that after the first pass, I can focus on structure, style, and meaning more than the mechanics of copyediting. Being able to customize tests is a bonus. Cons Nothing, really. If you have the word "black" and a character named "Black" in the same file, that will be flagged as a capitalization inconsistency, but you can easily ignore it. The software is quick to use, very easy to learn and performs in a few minutes critical tasks that would normally take hours. I like the fact that I can select the checks I prefer, adapt my document to a set style or create my own custom style. The spelling consistency checks, the acronyms finder, the capitalisation options for headings are just a few among many features that are available in the software. It almost always catching a few things that I would otherwise miss, and really helps to ensure that documents are correct and consistent. Pros I particularly like the pre-loaded styles that can be selected, and in my case I work with United Nations documents so the ability to run checks against United Nations style is a huge plus point for me. Pros I have been using PerfectIt for several years now, and it is a must-have for me in my professional life. I enjoy several of the features but my absolute favourites which I cannot live without are the style check and the ability to check my acronmyns and create a list of acronyms. These two have saved me countless days of additional work! Cons There is nothing in particular that stands out to me as something that I do not like about this product.
