The dashboards created through Tableau are visually appealing and helps in the quick analysis. For periodic reporting the reports can be made with connection to the backend source and when required can be updated with a click of a button. Pros 1) Rich options for inputting data ranging from CSV, Excel, SQL to almost every source. 2) Lots of data presentation/interpretation options available, Tableau provides the options ranging from table to different graphs itself based on the data selected. 3)In-depth analysis of data is easily possible. 4)The dashboards created can be set to update manually or relative to dates. 5) The created reports can be shared easily for view with teams. 6)Custom indicators can be created quickly. Cons 1)The software for new learners is available for only 2 weeks, there should be at least 3 months period. 2)The cost of the product is also high. Pros All the elements needed for data mining and creation of reports that actually create intelligence in the business. Ability to slice all elements under a very easy to use interface (if you've used Excel's pivots, then you can use Tableau). Exporting ability and running is done in the background hence freeing the end-user. Cons Just like with all data showing/reporting/mining software, Tableau relies entirely in the datamart that is behind it and how such data is arranged. That alone can be tricky to implement. Interface comes as Desktop and web-interface... however the web-interface is more suited for dashboards access. You don't need to know how to program to use it. There are so many different ways to display your data and you can combine multiple views to get the whole picture. It's SO user friendly. You can refresh your data quickly if you use the same report on a regular basis. Cons If you start with bad data, you need to clean it up before getting started. This is pretty self-explanatory, but for less tech savvy people this could be difficult. You may still need IT assistance to get good files. Their sales team was far more interested in making a sale than selling me the appropriate product for my needs, and I had to submit several support tickets before I was even granted the login URL to their online tool's platform. There was a very scary lack of backwards compatibility. I used their Online publishing service, and was horrified to find that all of my reports crashed overnight when Tableau upgraded their API. I reached out to support, received no solution, and was required to reconstruct all 20 of my databases to match Tableau's new spec. If my account rep's uninterested attitude is any indicator of the company at large, it would not surprise me to see this issue recur. Outside these serious issues, I found the tool difficult to work with on complex reports. I work in marketing, and was constantly developing custom solutions, merging data sets, and generally jumping through hoops to calculate such simple metrics as cost-per-lead, ROI, etc. I constantly found myself wishing I had developed my own reporting system from scratch--it would have been just as difficult, taken just as long, but would have been way cheaper, and at least I could have brushed up on my coding. Almost anything you can image you can create, including sophisticated drill downs, color coding, correlated charts, and more. As I started learning Tableau I was consistently impressed by how deep the functionality of the product is and how I was able to create compelling, interactive visualizations to allow stakeholders to self-serve analytics. Cons Unfortunately the power of tableau brings a lot of complexity. It's not the type of software you can just click around and figure out so people who use it regularly do need to do a significant amount of training, and depending on their software proficiency the learning curve can be quite steep. The product, as a desktop software (I didn't use the online version), is starting to feel dated: you still have to save files and the software does crash every so often causing lost work, and you still have to deal with the annoyance of file management.
