I left the programs that I used before and relied on them completely, not only because of the color correction, which is the monster in it, but because for me it remained a complete production studio on my desk. It allowed me to achieve image and sound quality that I imagined was far away, and it made the workflow very easy for me. This program is really powerful and gives you limitless creative freedom. Its value for its price (especially the free version) is something else entirely. I recommend it to anyone serious about video, whether a skilled amateur or a professional looking for a strong alternative that doesn't cost a lot of money. Pros The main reason for enjoying DaVinci Resolve was its integration of all necessary tools in a single application. The color correction is very bad and competes with the strongest movie studios. The Nodes system gives you terrible control over the final appearance of the video. It integrates editing, effects (Fusion), and sound (Fairlight) into a single workspace, eliminating the need to switch between multiple programs and saving time. The most important thing is that the free version itself has great capabilities, so it is an excellent choice for anyone working alone or a small company that wants high quality without paying a lot of subscription money. Cons But like any program, DaVinci Resolve isn't perfect. The thing that bothers me the most about it is the learning curve, especially for those who come from programs that work with a layered system. It will take time to master Fusion's Nodes system or understand how Fairlight works, which can be frustrating at first. The program is also voracious in specifications. It needs a powerful graphics card and large RAM to work perfectly, especially with 4K projects or complex effects. If your device is average, you will feel irritated or unstable. Plenty of screen space to utilize even on the iPad, very well designed. I like the fact that it is exact,y the same product for every device. All the functions are there. Pros Very well put together program. I use it often for my clients. Video editing on my iPad or laptop is seamless. The fact that the free version is still very powerful in comparison paid products including. The color grading tab is filled with lots of useful nodes, and fusion is cool for all the effects needed if you like nodes this the one. Projects are easy to see and create and the system is very secure. I haven’t noticed any glitching. Well written program. High performance and speed, I didn’t even experience any lag. I haven’t tried the customer service due to how stable the program is. Cons I wish you didn’t have to buy the software separate for iPad and laptop. I began dabbling with color grading as well, and while a whole new world to me, it was fun to start to learn. Pros Everything is both streamlined, but also gives the ability for you to really get into the nitty-gritty and produce a quality project. All the tools needed are readily accessible. This was an opportunity for DaVinci to do something special by combining Editing with heavy VFX, Color Grading, and Audio Mixing in the same comprehensive package. Pros It’s either free or inexpensive depending on which version you use. If you buy, It’s a one time purchase, not using the “subscription model,” which I feel is exploitive. The ability to do color grading, VFX, and sound mixing in the same program is convenient, but not central to editing. Cons The basic editing functions, which should be very simple and intuitive, are unnecessarily convoluted and user hostile. Too many “modes” and keystrokes. A million things must be selected or de-selected to perform the most simple of functions. It really seems that either the editors who helped develop this program were amateurs, or ignored by programmers. Reason for choosing DaVinci Resolve To give it a shot. Cons Coming from Adobe, it can be a bit of a learning curve, but the value you're getting from it is hard to say anything negative about it. July 18, 2025 5.0 If I had known about DaVinci Resolve before I purchased a bundle of video editing software during COVID, I probably could have saved myself some money and headaches. Overall, DR is a remarkably well-stocked video editing and production tool with walls of features (even in its free version, which I use). The platform is stable and handles most production tasks I'd need for developing lecture videos, YouTube gaming and commentary videos, and video podcasts. It's the software I now recommend to everyone who asks. Pros 1) It operates on multiple levels, making it possible to learn basic video editing relatively quickly while leaving room for more advanced editing down the line. 2) It is a robust tool for project creation. The free version alone comes stock with more features than I could possibly use for my use cases. Additionally, while I haven't used them yet, there is a decent library of third party plugins that add more functionality and options for projects. 3) The DR community is extensive enough that there are enough tutorials for most common use cases of the platform that you can get a walkthrough of even its most advanced features. BMD also has a community forum and product support, though I have only used the former for seeking solutions. 4) A major bonus: the free version is a formidable piece of software on its own with many of the same performance possibilities as its paid sibling. While they could justify charging something for this, I think it benefits BMD to have a complete piece of software to ease in new users before they pay hundreds for the full service model. I prefer this model for software. Cons 1) If you want to do anything more complicated than simple or intermediate video editing, there is as learning curve. In fairness, this is to be expected, but it does make some of the more advanced features a bit daunting to approach. The workaround: there is probably a tutorial for the thing you want to do on YouTube. 2) Customizing the interface is, for me, not as intuitive (or, in some cases, possible) as I'd like. I've learned to work around it, though. 3) This is a minor quibble. The jump from DR to DR Studio (the paid version) is $295. It would be nice if there was an intermediate level for those wanting some of the more advanced features (such as captioning) but not the full suite that is best suited for film production. This is very useful as the software to go for schools and students. And it can get as big as needed. The learning curve for newcomers is very fast, and I have only had some trouble trying to explain how a project media library differs from what you see at the OS file level. There are a lot of functions available in the free version and it doesn't feel like a big demo, it really looks like they just made the basic functions available for someone who just want to edit some videos with his family and the more advanced features that doesn't concern everyone, are reserved for the paid version. The app is fast and responsive even in low end hardware for 1080p that I use, I do believe there are a couple of things in the UI/UX that feel weird but seems like "this is how the pro video people are used to" so yeah I don't know how to feel about it. I mean if the people who pay you require the UI to be that weird, who am I to say "make it simple for me" eh? All in all there are a lot of tutorials that can help you get the results you want and the one off license system is a blessing those days. Owner Photography Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Davinci Resolve free is all you need for most small to medium scale video editing projects" September 6, 2020 4.0 Pros The free version of Resolve is by far the most functional and feature rich video editing software out there. It beats out Adobe Premiere in the overall feature set you get, especially when you start to get into building effects in Fusion. Each update has helped Resolve take more advantage of powerful GPUs so when you're working with VFX you're rewarded by having a high end GPU during playback and rendering. The color modification options are rich and can do incredible things with your footage. You can easily take non-log footage and apply pre-existing effects and layers to get the look you want. Fairlight is their audio editing suite, which is how this application started out as so you can imagine that the audio editing tools are amazing, and they are. One of the most convenient tools is the ability for Resolve to use audio analysis to automatically line up multiple clips from different cameras that filmed the same scene. If you find yourself often using a clapboard to align your footage, say good bye (assuming you're capturing audio from each camera). The community of creators on Resolve is massive and you can find tutorial son how to do almost anything online. It's how I got started learning how to use the software and I'm still scratching the surface of it's capabilities. Cons The software is huge and cumbersome to learn. Luckily there's tons of tutorials on youtube from many creators that can show you how to do simple to super complex tasks. If you're moving from Adobe Premiere, you're going to miss the ability to import content from other apps directly inside of your project. Resolve doesn't support integration into Photoshop and whatnot so you can't go from editing an image in PS then open it up in Resolve like you can in Premiere. If you're someone who heavily relies on the Adobe apps, this will be the hardest thing to get past, but once you've adjusted your workflow it doesn't really add that much time to your projects. You're more so losing out on the convenience. In previous versions it had a tendency to crash randomly. Sometimes effects you create would go corrupt or prevent the project from successfully rendering or the Resolve to crash during rendering. This would require you to pinpoint what part of the video where the failure occurred, find the offending effect, delete and recreate it from scratch. This could be caused by something as simple as a scrolling text box. It was impossible to know what would prevent a video from rendering, which was super frustrating especially when considering the error message doesn't give you any info into what caused the render to fail. They've since made fixes to prevent this from happening, but just something to keep in mind when working in large projects: save often and test your exports. Review Source Abhilash C.
