Pros google voice is free to use as long as you have phone service through a service provider prior to signing up for google voice. The app is easy to learn how to use and understand the features, its pretty straight forward. google voice also allows you to get verification texts as well as regular texts and sms messages. Cons it would be better if you could get multiple google voice numbers with the same email account and it was pretty frustrating when i couldn't recover my old google voice number or get a new google voice number with the email account that i was previously using. Thrilled that it has texting available and that it's consistent. Love that its free. Pros Value for money. I just started a small business and provided I dont send messages that look like spam or duplicates, I have very few issues. It's been very helpful! Cons It can be a little clunky. It doesnt show on my phone whether its a normal call or gvoice call and that can be a little stressful. Also, the web interface doesnt have emoji's, which for a regular business would be fine, but I deal with weddings and a certain number of heart emojis is expected. Being able to check messages, make calls, and access voicemail from different devices gives it a level of flexibility that I appreciate. It is simple enough that I can use it when needed without spending much time managing it. Pros Google Voice gives me a separate phone number that I can use for calls and text messages without needing another phone. I like being able to access it from both my phone and computer, and having calls, messages, and voicemail connected to the same account is convenient. Cons The calling and messaging experience is more basic than a regular mobile service, and occasionally notifications or incoming calls do not feel quite as seamless as using the phone’s native number. I have to be really careful when using it. I have to double and triple check all texts and links to google calendar sent. Pros The only thing I like about Google Voice is the convenience. I am overall frustrated with Google voice. Cons You have to open up contacts to change contact information, you can't just change it in google voice, so if you mistype something, it's stuck like that only if you open contacts. There's not an edit button. I am frustrated that there is a 160 character limit for SMS texts. I didn't know this for months because I never received an error message that texts weren't sent. Also, links sometimes don't get sent. I have to confirm and reconfirm if texts were received, and sometimes none of that gets through. It's profoundly frustrating because it's led to missed appointments. There's not even a character count to make sure. I have to open a separate document to make sure I'm under 160 characters. I know this is dependent on the person's cell phone carrier and service at the time, but I feel like there must be a way to fix this. I had to reach out to the google community to find all this out. April 15, 2025 5.0 Overall experience with Google voice has been amazing, I've had the same phone number through them for a few years now and it's helped me be able to manage everything even when I didn't have a regular cell phone number. Pros What I like most about Google voice is that you get all the features of a regular phone number for free with Google voice's virtual phone number, mostly the ability to receive verification codes Cons What I like least about Google voice isn't necessarily directed at Google voice but at other websites or programs that won't accept the Google voice phone number because it is VoIP. Switched from [Zoom Phone](https://www.capterra.com/p/208535/Zoom-Phone/) Because I needed assistance with accessing my verification codes and text now charged 99 cents each time I would need to receive a verification code which was adding up to a lot of money. The paid plans are very cheap, and offer great 24/7 customer support just a call away. Pros A great option for an alternate phone line, the setup is fast and easy, it even allows you to choose your own number. I love that you can have it in your computer and your phone, and both are sync! Managing my texts and messages is easier from my laptop, so that's a great plus. It is a free service, so is the best bang for your buck, as long as you have internet access, you have service. Cons There's some issues in the sync, and sometimes the text I send from my phone, aren't loaded on my laptop, but other than that, I haven't experience any major bugs. Review Source Kimberly S. Pros I really like the clarity of every single phone call! I like the feature of being able to utilize the "Do not disturb" feature outside of my normal working hours. I did not know it had this feature at first and I was getting work calls in the middle of the night! Cons There are a lot of features I am not familiar with, so I would say better training material is needed. Cons There is a bit of a delay from a call coming in to when you can answer it on your cell phone. It was disappointing to discover that our selected solution wouldn't allow for texting - a key feature in 2023. Pros Transferring existing numbers was a breeze, we had zero issues setting up new lines, linking mobile phones to numbers and with a Google integrated system, our IT Management was easy as possible. Cons Be aware - CANADIAN users - Google Voice doesn't support SMS or text based features for Canadian phone numbers. This means no access to authentication systems required for mobile and remote work. That made the product a none starter for us, and after moving our whole system over, we had to move it right back to a competing service that offered SMS features. We ultimately used VoIP because it allowed text and call features even though it had a more difficult to use interface and setup. Voicemail messages are in text, so you can quickly read them. Cons You do have to use it or lose it. It will remind you to take or make a call, if you go a certain time with no calls. Having a desk phone for use in my office was important, so I checked prior to going with Google Voice to make sure this would be an option. G-Voice made setup of the desk phone super simple. I made sure to buy a desk phone that would be compatible with G-Voice. When the phone came, I was able to plug it in and follow the instructions given on Google Workspace, under Voice settings, for setting up a desk phone. It took a few minutes and my phone was configured and working perfect. I have not experienced any of the quality issues I was initially worried about. So, overall, Google Voice has been a great option for me as a small business. Pros Like most software when starting a business, the best thing is the quality-to-cost, or value, that is super important. Google Voice shines in this regard. You can get a business phone setup and running in no time and at half the cost of a traditional landline service. I admit that I was initially concerned about the quality of an "internet" phone service handling important business calls, but I have not had a single problem with quality, or calls being dropped, or clients being unable to hear me, etc. I've even discovered that there are hidden advantages over a traditional landline phone when the power goes out, the phone lines go down, or even when the internet is down. While the traditional landline goes out when the phone line goes down, Google Voice doesn't skip a beat because I am able to connect via the internet or the Voice app on my smartphone-- anywhere. Cons The one thing that drove me a little crazy at setup was the way that phone numbers are assigned/chosen. You have that ability to search for different area codes or number combinations, but holy smokes is it time consuming to try to find the best numbers that work for a business. I understand when you're just handing out free Google Voice numbers to consumers, but for a business you would think there might be an option to select numbers that are easy to remember-- things like "1122" or "7575," etc. I was able to eventually find a number that I liked, but it took several attempts spaced out over a few days. This number is going to be placed on business cards, websites, ads, and it will become part of the business. Reason for choosing Google Voice I primarily went with Google Voice for the cost. But the ease of setup, and the ability to access my business phone from anywhere using a web browser or the Voice mobile app, were also important. Review Source TH Trevor H. Cons Difficult to use with air-pods, weird echo, and microphone doesn't seem to work well. Doesn't happen often but there are some dropped calls and connectivity issues. March 29, 2023 5.0 The single number forwarding to many people's phones I use at work. The white listing of calls and forwarding to my VOIP device I use at home. The voicemail dictation to email I use at both! When my father passed away, I ported-in (for a $20 fee) his cellphone to a Google Voice account so now whenever out-of-touch friends and business partners might call, they get a message of his passing and not need paying his cellphone bill. So much more too! Pros It's a hugely useful, and mostly Free, product which really help out with communication in both my business and private life with so many functions. It's a swiss army knife of communication. It's great! Cons Occasionally they will change the way the systems works and it 'breaks' my somewhat complicated setups and will have to figure out, "Ok... what changed... how can I get it to do what it did before?"... but I can't complain too much... it's great and basically free. Cons Not too many cons. One small one is that for text messages we don't see a notification pop up, so we have to check the app to see if any messages come through.
