Lambda handles millions of requests for us with very little operational work, and the team can ship small isolated functions quickly. You do need to invest in tooling (bundling, tracing, deployment) to keep it comfortable at scale. Pros Not having to manage servers at all is the big win. Our backend serves several consumer apps and runs mostly as Lambda functions behind API Gateway plus SQS consumers, so traffic spikes just scale out without anyone being paged. Pay-per-invocation keeps low-traffic admin and internal endpoints almost free, and the integration with DynamoDB, SQS, EventBridge and Step Functions means most glue code is just configuration in our Serverless Framework files. Cons Cold starts are still noticeable on less used endpoints, especially with larger bundles, so we had to spend time on esbuild bundling and provisioned concurrency for a few hot paths. The 15 minute limit and payload size limits push long running jobs elsewhere. Local debugging is never quite the same as the real environment, and CloudWatch logs get hard to navigate without an external observability tool. Cons In large scales, you need to know a little about lambda in order to make sure your service runs without any disruptions. Reasons for choosing AWS Lambda We chose serverless because of the cost benefits and also managing less infra. We put them as API endpoints, as gears to process data received from events with our defined thresholds in the service, as queue processors, and as B2B endpoints. Our experience with the service has been around how easy it was to define, develop, and create. So, it's a pretty straightforward implementation. You define the code and the triggers. Then connect it. Security is also a breeze with the IAM support. Pros The way that AWS Lambda can give you control of the way that it behaves and can be consumed is quite flexible. We were able to prepare for high-demand spikes on the services with hot availability, as well as connect them to be triggered by different events. This last part allowed them to be flexible for many patterns in our services as front and middle actuators in the flow of data. Cons This service is simple to use, so I can't recall a negative feeling associated with it.
