### "Versatility = Redmine as Bug Tracker/Project Manager"

December 16, 2019

4.0

Redmine is my de-facto BTS every company I go. I am very happy with its stability, versatility and easy to use for the end user.

Pros

Redmine is a powerful Bug tracker system with such a flexibility that you can use it as your CMS if you want. There is a ton of plugins to install. You can use Redmine as a CRM, ERP, Payroll, etc... as long as the community around it can imagine a use case, it will exist. There are some paid services which customize Redmine to run as a full ERP, but I have no experience with them.

Cons

The installation process can be a pain for novices: You have to prepare your VM installing Ruby, then Ruby Gems and others gems to make advances functions to work. The source control system interface is good, but hard to install and configure. You will have better luck if you download a Bitnami VM or an AWS Appliance Image. There is a Docker image as wall, but I have no experience with it.

### "Using Redmine in project/task management."

October 31, 2025

4.0

I used Redmine in projects from 2011-2017, now I still occasionally used it in my side projects. But for software development projects, I used Jira more.

Pros

Redmine can be used in project and task management, and can also be used as timesheet management, it can easily set up workflow.

Cons

When I used Redmine, it is more like general task management tool, can't very closely work with Agile or Scrum methodology.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing Redmine

More closely work with Scrum project. now my software project are small and Agile base, Jira is more suitable.

### "Redmine has a perception issue - might be good tool, but is not very inviting to the eye"

December 28, 2024

3.0

It did not just clicked with us. In retrospect - a tool is not enough if the monkey is not wise to use it.

Pros

Redmine used to be de facto project management software when people knew what RoR is and it has this distinctive look of software that is too stubborn to change for the better or worse of it. I like that it is Open Source and some of developers are familiar with it, but if you are not using it and choosing your first project management software - look somewhere else. You can self host it, but eventually you will reach its limits and it will be PITA to maintain it.

Cons

It looks dated and philosophy is also a bit dated. Also we were using it wrong, but this is not surprising as it is quite rigid in comparison to other tools (that might be too flexible).

### "Great ticket management once you heavily customize"

December 12, 2024

Pros

It's open source, so it is easy to customize.

Cons

### "Flexible Project Management"

May 19, 2021

4.0

We're customized Redmine to support several aspects of our IT business. Its made it easy to departmentalize things such as Change Requests, Active Directory Request and General Ticket. We've even integrated it into a Self Serve IT tool we recently launched. Its branched several moved pieces together.

Pros

Redmine supports countless user created plugins. This provides a lot of potential for how Redmine can be used. In our case, we customized Redmine to function as an inexpensive IT Change Management / Ticketing Tool.

Cons

Slight learning curve at first. But Redmine has a lot of forums available, so any challenge you face or feature you may struggle with surely has a forum post about it. I always found the solution to my problem before long.

### "Use Redmine for yours daily tasks"

October 8, 2019

4.0

We use Redmine to record everyday task tasks. We would like more resources for project management and agile methodologies. This is generally a good tool, but it depends on your goals.

Pros

Redmine is a great tool for daily tasks. It is opensource and has several plugins that offer more features. Its API allows for easy integration with other software.

Cons

Project management features are lacking. It is very confusing and the presentation is not good. You need reports too, although new ones can be created using the API. Features for agile methodologies are very important. There is a plugin, but it does not offer a good backlog presentation.

### "Redmine is good"

September 27, 2025

5.0

I really liked working with Redmine. Keeping track of the number of instances for an issue was really helpful.

Pros

I like the reporting and project management was made really easy and organized. Keeping track of issues is critical.

Cons

The interface could be a little bit more polished but it gets the job done so it's not an issue at all.

### "No longer at par with technology"

February 3, 2025

3.0

Pros

Redmine was our project management tool for several years. Lightweight and streamlined web app to track everything in the project, wiki and code/document repo included. Using a ready-made distro can make things easier. We now use it as project archive.

Cons

It is quite old as technological stack. It requires high knowledge to upgrade and specially to ensure data migration, we had a hard time upgrading and had to move to another tool, keeping it as an archive.

### "Very complete tool, with lots of customization. Lacks a little in the UI area"

June 12, 2022

4.0

I've been working with Redmine for almost 4 years for a particular project, as it was something the client asked for. Although we were never able to use the latest version of Redmine, we've updated a couple of times to more recent versions. I saw little to no change in the UI between those. There is a lot of room for improvement to make the tool more user-friendly. Nevertheless, Redmine has always proven it's worth where it excels. Project, Task and Time management are tasks completely assisted and boosted while using Redmine. Reporting gives you as much information as you need. Customization is very flexible and allows changes on several levels, either server, project or user-wise.

Pros

Redmine offers a whole lot of features. Customization allows enabling or disabling them to adjust the tool to your needs. Project management features are quite handy when working with a team and you need to manage a schedule. Time management is also a very good feature to be aware how much effort you put into a particular task.

Cons

The interface is a little too "enterprisey", this means it's ability to show you as much information as possible makes it a little complex to see this information in a friendly manner. Editing information is also a little clunky and not very intuitive.

### "Free task management tool"

July 15, 2022

2.0

It is easy to use, useful for independent tasks, small projects and without dependencies.

Pros

It is a free tool that allows you to manage tasks

Cons

It is not very robust, it does not allow me to control state changes with conditions or programming, it does not allow me to create dependencies between tasks that allow me to have a specific project

### "Full customizable but not great"

January 20, 2023

2.0

Pros

One of the things I like the most about Redmine is the customization it has. If you have an on-premise service you could just create your own theme for the company, create your own "ticket" categories and so on. It's very flexible in that way so if you manage it correctly and have a great maintenance probably it's worth for a few bucks.

Cons

It's horrible at issue management, even tho you can customize the UX it's not intuitive, it has a big community but not that big compared with their competitors and most of the plugins are hard to implement or incomplete since are obsolete. Also if you choose the on-premise solution like I said you will have to make a monthly maintenance or in large companies it does not escalate properly and you will have to improve your servers expending more money or even extracting the database to another external service.

### "Good open source ticketing software"

May 13, 2018

4.0

A useful ticketing system as well as a time tracking system for free, as it is open source.

Pros

I used this software in two companies that had it customized to their needs. So the possibility to customize features to fit the company workflow seems to be properly working. We used the time tracking feature to know which part of a project was taking more time than planned. The ticket's features are very useful for teamwork as you can see who worked on what task and when. You can also easily add documents attached to the task, and even write some Wiki for projects that may need it.

Cons

Redmine can be quite complicated to use, for one not used to software like this. For example we used to open parts of the software for clients when we were doing fine tuning on applications and websites, and often the client needed a small training to be able to create ticket and answer questions on the ticket.

### "Works better than it looks"

November 15, 2018

4.0

Pros

Redmine has clear, logical functionality and there's a lot of power in using Markdown to create connections between documentation and tasks. The wiki feature was very useful for my team! I also liked being able to set milestones and easily configure ticket options (priorities, assignments, status). In this sense, it's similar to JIRA in that you can very easily edit information about tasks and produce robust, well-structured documentation.

Cons

The UI doesn't feel super polished, and the wiki feature would have been difficult for my team to adopt because you need to know Markdown in order to use it effectively. (Yes, Markdown is both a Pro and a Con in this review.) Redmine also didn't have a chat feature or the kind of file preview options my team expected.

### "Free Project Management"

January 7, 2017

4.0

Redmine provides a simple and easy to use tracking and project management software system all built into one. Redmine's issue tracking or ticketing system gives developers a fast and flexible tool to address issues with the software. The tool can also be used to track projects and to "chunk" projects into smaller bite-sized sub-projects that increase productivity and help members of a team keep up to date with the progress of a project. I've used Redmine with teams and found that the collaborative nature of the product can help members stay in touch and help with assigning subtasks. As a scrum manager, I found that it helps greatly in sprint planning and reporting. Also, you can generate Gant charts to visually show where a project is at any time. The best part of Redmine is that it's open sourced and given some customization, you can quickly create a ticketing and/or program management that helps meet the needs of different members of a team. Redmine is also free to use, which makes it popular with small and large organizations that don't have vast budgets for software purchases.

Pros

1\. Open-source (free) 2. Easy to use (once it's been customized) 3. Flexible (can be customized to your needs) 4. Multi-purposed (serve different roles at the same time)

Cons

1\. Requires someone to administrate it. 2. Requires installation, but a cloud based version is available.

### "Very good and robust ticket system"

October 13, 2016

5.0

I am using Redmine since 4 years now on a small virtual server which has now problem serving 30 power users with about 20% cpu load. Redmine has everything you need if you are looking for a ticket system. I use it for my advanced software engineering classes and for all my other projects, too. This system has never let me down. You can customize workflows, ticket types, extra field and there is a great community with a lot of plugins for special needs. I can absolutely recommend this system.

Pros

Easy to install and maintain. Easy configuration. Does not require a lot of hardware to run.

Cons

Looks a bit outdated but I don't do many updates.

### "There are better alternatives"

November 5, 2019

3.0

As a first approach in teams organizations, it's an useful tool, but it should modernize its interface. The wiki section is well constructed, in fact, nowadays, after stop using redmine as a team/task planner, it's the only element we are still using. The proyect managing have been changed to Trello

Pros

Redmine was the first proyect manager / team planner we used and it was helpful in order to control task completions, progress and term deviations. The incorporated wiki section is useful in order to get all the activities well documentated between team members.

Cons

The interface is not so friendly, it seems 'old fashioned' and it's not suitable to use from a mobile device. Nowadays that other tools let's you use its infrastructure, the first setup is only reserved to IT personal because it must be installed on the server side, so it's not a tool anyone can configure.
