Software Development Team Manager Computer Software Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Versatility = Redmine as Bug Tracker/Project Manager" December 16, 2019 4.0 Redmine is my de-facto BTS every company I go. I am very happy with its stability, versatility and easy to use for the end user. Pros Redmine is a powerful Bug tracker system with such a flexibility that you can use it as your CMS if you want. There is a ton of plugins to install. You can use Redmine as a CRM, ERP, Payroll, etc... as long as the community around it can imagine a use case, it will exist. There are some paid services which customize Redmine to run as a full ERP, but I have no experience with them. Cons The installation process can be a pain for novices: You have to prepare your VM installing Ruby, then Ruby Gems and others gems to make advances functions to work. The source control system interface is good, but hard to install and configure. You will have better luck if you download a Bitnami VM or an AWS Appliance Image. There is a Docker image as wall, but I have no experience with it. October 31, 2025 4.0 I used Redmine in projects from 2011-2017, now I still occasionally used it in my side projects. But for software development projects, I used Jira more. Pros Redmine can be used in project and task management, and can also be used as timesheet management, it can easily set up workflow. In retrospect - a tool is not enough if the monkey is not wise to use it. Pros Redmine used to be de facto project management software when people knew what RoR is and it has this distinctive look of software that is too stubborn to change for the better or worse of it. I like that it is Open Source and some of developers are familiar with it, but if you are not using it and choosing your first project management software - look somewhere else. You can self host it, but eventually you will reach its limits and it will be PITA to maintain it. Cons It looks dated and philosophy is also a bit dated. Its made it easy to departmentalize things such as Change Requests, Active Directory Request and General Ticket. We've even integrated it into a Self Serve IT tool we recently launched. Its branched several moved pieces together. Pros Redmine supports countless user created plugins. This provides a lot of potential for how Redmine can be used. In our case, we customized Redmine to function as an inexpensive IT Change Management / Ticketing Tool. Cons Slight learning curve at first. But Redmine has a lot of forums available, so any challenge you face or feature you may struggle with surely has a forum post about it. I always found the solution to my problem before long. We would like more resources for project management and agile methodologies. This is generally a good tool, but it depends on your goals. Pros Redmine is a great tool for daily tasks. It is opensource and has several plugins that offer more features. Its API allows for easy integration with other software. Cons Project management features are lacking. It is very confusing and the presentation is not good. You need reports too, although new ones can be created using the API. Features for agile methodologies are very important. There is a plugin, but it does not offer a good backlog presentation. Lightweight and streamlined web app to track everything in the project, wiki and code/document repo included. Using a ready-made distro can make things easier. We now use it as project archive. Cons It is quite old as technological stack. It requires high knowledge to upgrade and specially to ensure data migration, we had a hard time upgrading and had to move to another tool, keeping it as an archive. Lacks a little in the UI area" June 12, 2022 4.0 I've been working with Redmine for almost 4 years for a particular project, as it was something the client asked for. Although we were never able to use the latest version of Redmine, we've updated a couple of times to more recent versions. I saw little to no change in the UI between those. There is a lot of room for improvement to make the tool more user-friendly. Nevertheless, Redmine has always proven it's worth where it excels. Project, Task and Time management are tasks completely assisted and boosted while using Redmine. Reporting gives you as much information as you need. Customization is very flexible and allows changes on several levels, either server, project or user-wise. Pros Redmine offers a whole lot of features. Customization allows enabling or disabling them to adjust the tool to your needs. Project management features are quite handy when working with a team and you need to manage a schedule. Time management is also a very good feature to be aware how much effort you put into a particular task. Cons The interface is a little too "enterprisey", this means it's ability to show you as much information as possible makes it a little complex to see this information in a friendly manner. Editing information is also a little clunky and not very intuitive. If you don't have the money for Basecamp or Jira, it's a cheaper alternative. The cost you pay is for the bugs you see while running it. Pros It was easy to use the software; most of it was intuitive and it had an impressive link-back and drill-down system. I liked that we could customize dashboards and pull some basic metrics out of the funnels. Since we were a smaller team that used it, we didn't have large amounts of issues/data problems, so it was nice to have everything loading in context and faster. Cons Open source setup, so lots of bugs. Some things like email notifications never worked properly. Was hard to integrate other things with it (though this may have gotten better). Sometimes we would lose access to tickets and issues, and sometimes they disappeared out of the system, or we'd see duplications. Review Source MP Manjunath P. Integrated wiki allows for creating knowledge base and support information Pros Redmine is dead simple to setup (esp. if you get the Bitnami distribution) and use. The application is customizable - custom fields/ custom workflows. It can be easily extended with third party plugins. You can even find free mobile application to see/ manage work items on your phone We managed multiple client implementation and software product development of an Enterprise SaaS application using this. Cons While this is not squarely a Redmine issue, it an issue of the underlying stack and has affected us a few times - plugin/ dependency incompatibility. Redmine runs on Ruby and the Ruby plugin architecture issues affect it. So, test the plugin install on a separate instance before you put it on your main instance Review Source BD Binigya D. It is free, so it was a good start to using a fully fledged project management tool and get used to the process. It had adequate tracking features and after a bit of time, our team got used to it. But its archaic UI, confusing UX and a headache during deployment and frequent downtimes can seriously impede your project management process. So, it was a strictly OK experience for me with some pain points that were too impactful to ignore, so we had to make a switch to a better, a paid option. Pros Redmine is a project tracking tool with good intentions. I like that it is free, open source and comes with comparable features to its paid counterparts. I love its Git integrations, flexible time tracking options and multiple databases support, even though it may take a bit of tinkering the first time around. But most of all, it is free and that is its biggest plus point. Anyone, with some configuration can get started with it. Cons Where do I start? Redmine is free, so we have to keep that in mind too as it allows you to dip your toes into the waters of project management tools. I really dislike the UI and UX. Granted, you have some themes but that doesn't help its case. The UI looks aged and the UX is somewhat terrible. Our team took a lot of time to grasp it and use it properly. And even then, we were making a lots of mistakes and couldn't find the data we wanted quickly. Redmine does have lots of features but most of them are half-baked. And also, according to the deployment team, the deployment was a headache. And we also got frequent downtime too. We were always getting 5xx errors and that seriously hampered our ability to track projects effectively. This allows managers to have a global vision of how many resources are spent for a particular project and to make the best decisions for the business. Pros You can manage projects easily and efficiently, it allows you to control metrics such as estimated time spent by teams or by individual, you can create tasks and follow up on specific project functionalities and then you can get reports of time spent for each category in the project and this allows to make better informed decisions for the business. Cons The user experience design should be improved since sometimes the functionalities of the tool are not intuitive and this causes some time to be wasted. We can see who is working on what issues and how far along they are. We can re-assign issues to different teams. It works well with not too many problems. Pros Redmine keeps track of multiple task and projects. You can track issues, email issues into specific projects, track team members activity for solving the tasks or issues. There are templates that make it easy track progress of common issues/task. Overall it take a small learning curve but is a very powerful project tracking and management software. I love personalization in the distribution and categorization of the stages of the projects. it is entirely useful to cross-reference tickets (which are related). this prevents the creation of orphan tickets since you have an absolute control of the resolution of tickets Cons It is well designed for the management of small to medium-sized projects .. with large projects it is complicated because it allows to make so many changes in the structure of the project that it is counterproductive, at first the interface seems easy but when using it and having so many functions that it would be necessary A previous training for the use, it becomes very expensive when you upgrade to the premium versions of the tool. The Ruby on Rails pre-configuration requires technical experience, this is an additional cost. The administrative interface is not as effective and does not offer as much functionality as the rest of the tool. the distribution and loading of errors and incidents must be well defined, it can be a problem if the team does not understand well when it comes to "closed / result" or "Open / solving" ... it is not a 100% tool intuitive Review Source OA Obhioze A. Pros Redmine is a really easy tool to use, very intuitive. It's a free tool, easy to install and run. Supports roles and permission configuration for the users. Tickets created can store description and attached files. Tickets can be easylly found. Redmine has everything you need if you are looking for a ticket system. I use it for my advanced software engineering classes and for all my other projects, too. This system has never let me down. You can customize workflows, ticket types, extra field and there is a great community with a lot of plugins for special needs. I can absolutely recommend this system. Pros Easy to install and maintain. Easy configuration. Does not require a lot of hardware to run. Cons Looks a bit outdated but I don't do many updates. Review Source JS Javier S. The wiki section is well constructed, in fact, nowadays, after stop using redmine as a team/task planner, it's the only element we are still using. The proyect managing have been changed to Trello Pros Redmine was the first proyect manager / team planner we used and it was helpful in order to control task completions, progress and term deviations. The incorporated wiki section is useful in order to get all the activities well documentated between team members. Cons The interface is not so friendly, it seems 'old fashioned' and it's not suitable to use from a mobile device. Nowadays that other tools let's you use its infrastructure, the first setup is only reserved to IT personal because it must be installed on the server side, so it's not a tool anyone can configure.
