The wide range of sensors (SNMP, WMI, ping, bandwidth, HTTP and more) lets us monitor servers, network devices and services in one place. The dashboards and maps give a clear real-time view of network health, and flexible alerts by email, SMS or push notification help us catch issues before users notice them. Cons Licensing is based on sensors, so costs rise quickly as monitoring grows, since one device can use many sensors. The web interface feels a bit dated and can slow down with a large number of sensors. Reporting is not very flexible, and alerts need careful tuning to avoid too many notifications. The core server also runs only on Windows. The fact they still provide a free version for smaller networks is great. Pros It's ease of you and ability to support almost any network device. Lots of customisation to suit most devices. The alerting feature is the standard for network monitoring. Cons It can look a bit dated at times and miss the flashy, impressiveness of Grafana. It does what it promises gives us visibility into our network and infrastructure with reliable alerting. We've been using it for about 2 years now, and while it has some rough edges on the UI side and the costs add up, it's become an essential tool for our ops team. Pros The real game changer for me has been the intuitive dashboard. I can spot network issues at a glance without drowning in data. What I appreciate most is how easy it was to set up monitoring for our infrastructure without needing a PhD in networking. The alerting system is solid too; we actually get notified when something matters, not constant false alarms. Cons The licensing model can get expensive once you start monitoring more devices. We hit some unexpected costs when scaling up our infrastructure. December 11, 2025 5.0 Highly recommend it if you are looking for something cost efficient and something easy to build and maintain. Pros We been using PRTG for almost a year now. We enjoy that it is real-time monitoring and it alerts us using via SMS and email. We also implement the software in a cluster, so that there is no downtime. It offers the service for free to 100 sensors, which also makes this a great product if you are in a small-medium business company. It is easy to setup and use and within a few minutes you would have a functional alerting system. Cons I don't think I have anything to complain about if they are offering this for free. Creating maps takes some time, if they offer some built-in templates, I believe it would make it even better. But besides that, this is free - I can't complain about it. I am just a fan of the networking monitoring and alerts. Pros The Free version gives you 100 sensors to start with. That is more than enough to test the software out and can give you the full dive of the product. Cons A bit of a learning cursive at first form what I remember, but they do have the auto discovery for a device. That can help you figure out what you want to be monitoring. May 13, 2025 3.0 To be fair, this app was setup by my predecessor and some of the problems may have just been configuration choices he made. But the complexity of it, the number of probes was overwhelming. It does a good job of alerting, but when there is so much, it tends to overwhelm to the point of ignoring it. So trying to go thru and pare it down is not easy. Might be worth scrapping it and starting over. Pros It is a comprehensive solution. Monitoring, alerting, scheduling, it has most everything needed in a monitoring solution. Cons The complexity. So many probes all for the same machine. There are many solutions like PRTG, but I prefer PRTG, which is chosen with both the convenience of the interface and a lot of features. It was very easy to set up and manage. And one of my favorite parts is that you can use licenses that are suitable for your environment, even if your environment grows in the future, there is no need to rebuild the license accordingly. I think the monitoring application is very important from the point of view of security and stability, and PRTG is the most suitable and convenient for me among these applications. Pros It was very easy to use in the first turn, moreover, it has sensors suitable for the desired device. Cons There are many network monitoring tools like PRTG, but PRTG had the most convenient and easy-to-use interface among them. It has many good features. Master of Information Technology Used the software for: 3-5 years ### "PRTG makes diagnostic work easier" May 31, 2023 5.0 In the process of network management it is possible to encounter complex situations that are not noticeable to the naked eye which makes conventional systems not easily detected but cause significant operational havoc, for similar cases it is necessary to have tools to support the support team capable of seeing what is not easily detectable and PRTG is one of those reliable tools and high capacity monitoring and detection of anomalies, this coupled with a professional IT team ensures a network of high capacity and stability for end users. Pros Our level 1 support work is to timely detect those technical events that affect the network infrastructure and which are reflected in the reports created by users, some of these events went unnoticed to our sight because in the measurements (ping, traces) made to some of the strategic equipment provided results within the normal range, This demanded a lot of time in the detection of failures negatively affecting the SLA, when the pilot was made with PRTG and after several adjustments to the thresholds we were able to timely detect the variations which were not visible before, allowing us to recognize the beginning of a massive event; PRTG has very useful sensors that provide accurate metrics and with the help of protocols such as SNMP it is possible to communicate with remote equipment which facilitates our task. Cons I have been using the tool for several years and I can say that there is always something to learn from PRTG, the learning curve to get the most out of it is notorious, although we have had staff who have experience using it which is an important support in our work, however, there is ample information where some doubts are clarified in measurements or implementation of remote probes and the configuration of thresholds. Over the years it has helped me track down failing disks, failing server power supplies as well as advance alerting of capacity issues within my infrastructure. This is in addition to ongoing tasks like monitoring OS updates across the Infrastructure. Where I've had to deal with support, even though I might not always get an answer I'd like, I've been happy with the services provided. The PRTG Roadmap is clear about the direction PRTG is being expanded in. My PRTG dashboard (Map) is the first thing I open in the morning. Pros \-Breadth of sensor types available. I can monitor almost everything in my infrastructure, from Azure to 365 to on prem, Server and network Hardware, Windows / linux services and OS data. -Very customisable in how the above is monitored and Alerted upon -Easy Creation of Dashboards and Libraries of particular sensor types, for instant visibility. Pros The tool provides us with certain functionalities adaptable to our network topology in order to have 24/7 monitoring of each of the elements involved; being based on sensors we can configure the thresholds according to our metrics to detect alterations in these and once presented an abnormal event the tool with its great capacity of notifications allows the IT team to locate the root of the failure and make corrections in a timely manner, with this we have mitigated the impact on the SLA. Cons As a recommendation should be sized very well the amount of elements to monitor in order to make use of the appropriate license, once you have the corresponding sensors should be strategically located in the different nodes, servers or cloud services to have the measurements that your team requires, otherwise the tool is very customizable and adaptable to every need.
