Master of Information Technology Telecommunications Used the software for: 2+ years ### "PRTG makes diagnostic work easier" May 29, 2023 5.0 In the process of network management it is possible to encounter complex situations that are not noticeable to the naked eye which makes conventional systems not easily detected but cause significant operational havoc, for similar cases it is necessary to have tools to support the support team capable of seeing what is not easily detectable and PRTG is one of those reliable tools and high capacity monitoring and detection of anomalies, this coupled with a professional IT team ensures a network of high capacity and stability for end users. Pros Our level 1 support work is to timely detect those technical events that affect the network infrastructure and which are reflected in the reports created by users, some of these events went unnoticed to our sight because in the measurements (ping, traces) made to some of the strategic equipment provided results within the normal range, This demanded a lot of time in the detection of failures negatively affecting the SLA, when the pilot was made with PRTG and after several adjustments to the thresholds we were able to timely detect the variations which were not visible before, allowing us to recognize the beginning of a massive event; PRTG has very useful sensors that provide accurate metrics and with the help of protocols such as SNMP it is possible to communicate with remote equipment which facilitates our task. Cons I have been using the tool for several years and I can say that there is always something to learn from PRTG, the learning curve to get the most out of it is notorious, although we have had staff who have experience using it which is an important support in our work, however, there is ample information where some doubts are clarified in measurements or implementation of remote probes and the configuration of thresholds. May 28, 2023 4.0 Over the years we have experienced failures in our network which have allowed us to learn details that we could correct over time, usually our technical support function was corrective, that is, when a failure occurred our team worked and corrected the anomaly presented, with PRTG we could proactively turn the work into preventive, with the possibility of preconfiguring thresholds on nodes and other specific equipment we could detect failures such as traffic jams, loops and even in some BRAS servers failures such as lack of IPv4 addresses; All this allowed us to improve the network's operability, reducing downtime. Pros Honestly I have used several tools that allow us to perform the analysis of our IT infrastructure and I can say that PRTG has given us a hand in relation to monitoring, remote management and fault detection in equipment such as switches and other transport network equipment, in addition to them and based on the previous configuration where we parameterize the nominal values to determine their normal operation which gives us timely alerts to take corrective actions on the spot, the tool is very complete and customizable to our need. Cons The implementation of the tool is the point where you have to be more careful to make good use of this and in turn PRTG perform the functions for which it was designed, in the initial configuration thresholds are determined which are not the same in all organizations therefore requires that the staff implementing the application has extensive knowledge in network administration and the learning curve is steep despite being intuitive tool. July 22, 2023 4.0 PRTG is a powerful tool that greatly helps any IT team, by relying on protocols such as snmp and netflow among others, it allows to acquire very accurate traffic information in the different equipment with which it communicates, this gives an image of the current status of the equipment or service analyzed, thus ensuring immediate response to any eventuality occurred which sometimes represents losses of money for the organization. Pros The tool provides us with certain functionalities adaptable to our network topology in order to have 24/7 monitoring of each of the elements involved; being based on sensors we can configure the thresholds according to our metrics to detect alterations in these and once presented an abnormal event the tool with its great capacity of notifications allows the IT team to locate the root of the failure and make corrections in a timely manner, with this we have mitigated the impact on the SLA. Cons As a recommendation should be sized very well the amount of elements to monitor in order to make use of the appropriate license, once you have the corresponding sensors should be strategically located in the different nodes, servers or cloud services to have the measurements that your team requires, otherwise the tool is very customizable and adaptable to every need. The monitoring is made easy with custom sensors and updated snmp library files. Previously, the mail support will be a bit delay since HQ in Germany is 6-8 hours away, but now, APAC has its own resources to respond to the case. Pros Easy to setup and operate. Pros What I like most about PRTG is that it is very easy to deploy, in addition to being very intuitive, it does not require much knowledge to configure it. It also has an APP for Android that is very useful and from which you can monitor the services. Cons What I like least is that it is a little expensive compared to the competition. Once you get everything done in terms of configurations and custom settings, you basically need to keep watching the dashboard and your email for the notifications. Pros I like the interface, which is very versatile and allows you to customize the views that are more important to you. I also like to receive notifications when something happens so we can quickly react and fix. Cons Some of the sensors require very complex configurations and that sometimes prevents us to get the most from PRTG. The system is so complete that it also has too much settings for each sensor which sometimes makes the work of configuring them very exausting. The 24/7 monitoring, the vast array of sensors available, the maps that can be made available without need for a login, and along with the historical data that is available make this a must use piece of software. It's worth the time even if all you can use is the free 100 sensor version. Pros I can monitor just about everything I need to monitor. Most are via the built in sensors but the options for custom sensors takes it to the next level. Cons The price is hard to get past. Smaller shops would have a hard time validating the cost. The interface is can be overwhelming (not sure how to avoid that) and it's frustrating that it's not possible to multi-select objects on a map and move them all at the same time. Instead you have to move them one at a time which can become very tedious. I was searching for an easy solution to monitor the internetconnection of one of my customers from outside. They sporadically experienced strange bandwidth problems and the cable provider didn't solve the problem within months. So while searching for an easy to install and use monitoring (simple ping) solution I found PRTG from Paessler in Nuremberg. I 've heard of it before as the Windows based alternative to Nagios. What can I say: I expected a solid Dice Game and ended up in Las Vegas! Installed withing minutes on a small Celeron machine running Windows 7. This runs the core Server and the Probe. You create Groups within the Windows (or Browserbased) Desktop. Within those Groups you create Devices and Sensors (Ping, HTTP, FTP, NTP, SIP, SMTP, SNMP Switch Traffic, ... and I'd say hundreds of others) at Locations you can define and are shown on a map. A configurable HTTPS allows secure Browser and mobile APP access. I use the one for my Windows phone that shows me my favorite (customer) Sensors directly. Automatically scan your Network (that might create a lot of Devices and Sensors, especially when you are using SNMP ready Switches, but don't worry, just pause them before you run out of your licenses). Monitor Switch Traffic if you wonder how long the Windows 10 updates disturb your other Machines. You can install remote Probes in other networks to monitor them and still collect all data on one central monitoring server. PS: In the end, the cable provider changed the modem after I sent them several times very clear screenshots from PRTG where you could see the 1800 ms echos all three weeks instead of 32 ms the rest of the time. We use it so monitor real time network connectivity with our remote locations. Pros Really enjoy the ease of use with setting up sensors. Cons Dashboard functionality could be a little more robust. We would like to use instant geographical information with a dashboard, but not that great and time consuming to use. Also to adapt or tweak thresholds is very easy. Pros It's very easy to implement and for a lot of the user cases it does not need an agent or software to be installed Cons For well known Enterprise Products e.g. VMWare VCenter there are only limited intergration available. Network Engineer Information Technology and Services Used the software for: I used a free trial ### "One of the most powerful infrastructure monitoring software" May 29, 2022 4.0 A good experience and I recommend using it, as it is one of the most powerful network monitoring software, but the free version must be tried to ensure that it works in a manner commensurate with the network and the work environment. Pros The large number of monitoring operations on the servers and the availability of options to monitor and clarify cloud services in detail It is an integrated control panel and you can control the number of seconds and services of the machine And it divides them for you into categories such as the machines that are hosted on the ESXI and puts them in a separate group and so on. The interface is excellent, clear and fast, unlike some other programs It is characterized by its work on the local server without the need for a separate machine. The servicedesk uses it as monitoring tool so we can react proactive! Pros The way to configure, a lot of sensors, snmpo alerting, templates, how it works for our company is realy great!
