Pros Kali Linux supported my teaching of the EC-Council Ethical Hacking course. Kali Linux contains numerous tools built in for penetration testing and network/ security programming. I developed Java code on Kali using the Java Secure Socket Extension (JSSE) and OpenSSL for creating secure cryptography channels between a Java clients and servers. Kali supported many tools for packet sniffing and inspection such as Wireshark and TCP Dump. Excellent Linux environment for security and cryptography programming as well as penetration testing and ethical hacking. Kali Linux ran great in a VM on top of VMware fusion to execute the Java secure client/server code. Cons I haven’t experienced any issues in developing on Kali even in a sandbox virtual environment. It is a must for every cybersecurity professional or researcher. Pros The main motivation for using Kali Linux is the pre-installed set of penetration testing, network security, and cryptanalysis tools included in the system. I can't imagine installing everything from scratch. This is a major time saver to have almost everything needed included in the system. I rely heavily on Kali Linux for penetration testing and intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS). I deploy it in a controlled virtual environment consisting of Attacker and Defender VMs to test some penetration testing experiments. My research depends mainly on tools such as Nessus, Nmap, SNORT (for intrusion detection), HPing3 among others. Kali Linux includes most of what I need in this field of research. Cons Some tools are not available and not easily installed such as SNORT. It would be great to have it preinstalled. Pros Kali Linux is an operating system having pre-installed software that allows you to test the security and firewalls of your network. Many tools are included to test password strength (ex: brute force attack tools) and DoS attacks. Cons Tools may be a little complex, and documentation must be read to know each tool's purpose. Pros The advantage of this distribution is that it carries all the tools that any penetration tester needs without the need to download them again and face many errors.
