The price tag can be high, but with a large budget, it will definitely pay off to go this route. Pros There are two offerings for Magento, a free open source version, and a paid enterprise version that builds on the same open source framework with additional features. This can be incredibly helpful for a smaller company that wants an enterprise-level eCommerce platform, but has a smaller budget. The application has many builtin features with even more available via third party extensions. Cons New versions tend to be rather large, code-breaking upgrades. When upgrading, it is necessary to retest lots of features and can require several code updates. Sadly, since 2018 it has succumbed to the B2c business model of Adobe and the likes which reduces even more an already small open source market. Cons Since 2018 and with the adquisition from Adobe, one of the best ecommerce platforms in the market succumbed to the greed of the B2C business model of Adobe and the likes which pretty much milk their products through subscriptions. Which resulted in an almost abandoned and forgotten open souce version. You can truly customize your shop for any look, feel or functionality you need. Pros Magento offers a one-stop place for hosting your website. It has a variety of good features that make it attractive for web hosting. Magento offers us an option of installing more than 5000 extensions to suit our e-commerce platform. When using Magento, you can simply customize your website to suit your platform. The fact that you can also get it for free was one of the factors that made us choose it to host our platform. Magento offered our website scalability in terms of the number of products that the website could hold Cons With Magento, we had to engage the services of a developer which was an added cost. I would always recommend Magento. Pros First, I want to say Magenti is not as easy as shopify but with a little bit of learning, I was able to handle it. Magento is an excellent store building platform with great features and customizations. I was able to download Magento open source for free. I love the fact that they have an excellent active global community that's ready to thrash any problem. Did I say this software made for any type of business, products or services. As a developer I loved working on this platform, mainly because the developers who wrote it took a lot of care and did things right. If you test it and think it's cumbersome, remember this: it's not built for running a single website; it's built for running a business. I ran 15 websites off one instance of Magento, using cross-site pricing, coupons, and integration to our ERP system. Cons It's big and it's heavy. The software is easy to set up, configure, and does not require the skill set of a programmer or experienced web designer, especially if you are just using a template. The documentation is very specific and easy to understand, Magento is great for a non-technical person. Pros Magento is easy to install. Magneto's documentation makes it easy to understand the configuration of it's many shopping cart settings. The cart options in it's administrative panel are organized into categories that are easy to find and understand. It has just about every feature a shopping cart should need, there are optionally numerous ad ons you can easily install to enhance or create additional functionality. Cons Magento can slow down until you clear the cache/Index, most modern shopping carts, unlike Magento, do not slow down this way. We did use a developer to build it out but was easy to dive into and help build out some pages to help the project stay on track with launch. You do have to have some background in websites and coding for some parts but most sections it is easy to plug in in the information. They allow you to handle your SEO easily and create up-selling, cross selling and promotions easily. Cons I didn't like that there are some glitches but I think that is common for any platform. The glitches do require you to have a developer who is familiar or certified to build websites in Magento. If your organization needs Magento, it needs Magento - but managing a Magento site will result in a lot of headaches and a lot of development expense. Pros Magento is fully open source and very powerful. No matter how many products or orders you receive, Magento is strong enough to handle it and manage them. It's the perfect tool if you're selling products with many variations and/or customization options. The sky is the limit as far as web customization goes because it is open source. Cons Magento development is very expensive and absolutely required if you have a Magento platform. In House development can be very time consuming and strangle IT departments for web optimization. Site updates can get caught in caching loops as well. All integration projects to Magento are also time consuming and expensive. The free version of Magento might start out free, but you will be paying heavily in the end no matter what. Customization can get really complicated and often can cause problems down the line.
