Creating custom MSI or simple MSIs by placing files into folders is best for me. I use alternative tools for difference scanning/compiling MSIs ands higher licences are too expensive for education use. Pros Easy to create simple MSIs. Editing MSIs with full customisation and advanced tools mean smooth process in getting final product ready. Scanning to create an MSI is by far the easier feature. Cons Difficult to figure out what feature are available as part of your subscription. Several times I have worked on an msi only to find out on saving or testing that I needed a higher subscription/licence. Support queries are left unanswered or when/if answered are addressed 4- 5 days after being raised. Even requests for pricing info are ignored. It's nemesis InstallShield is overpriced, antiquated, and hard to use. Discovering Advanced Installer was a revelation. Pros I love Advanced Installer because it has a simple and clean user interface, and the user interface is easy to use. The support I got from the team prior to an Enterprise Edition license was top-notch. We had a non-trivial installer requirement, and they worked hard to get us where we needed to be. Cons The Enterprise Edition is not free ;) Seriously, I really have no complaints. It does what I need it to, and the support was a pleasure to do business with. Changes are simple to manage and the update process was streamlined as soon as we started using the product. Frequent updates help ensure any bugs are quickly realized but more importantly the consistent feature updates help us in ways we hadn’t been thinking about. Cons Could be a steep learning curve for some, easily addressed but coming from custom built process it can take a minute to understand the model and how to manage platform and other dependencies. Cons The renewal for perpetual licenses isn't that attractive, you pay half of the original amount for one year updates. One free "LTS" updated version every few years would be welcome. Full disclosure: I receive a complimentary license for Advanced Installer because I am a Microsot MVP. However, I wouild buy a license without that consideration because the product is that good. Pros The support team at Caphyon is top three of all companies I've dealt with in more than 30 years of active software use. They are responsive, intelligent, and provide excellent suggestions and corrections. The feature set is huge and their frequest updates provide real feature enhancements not just window dressing. Cons Hard to think of anything... perhaps that It's expensive. But it's worth it. Pros It does a very good job of making it easy to build MSI's to install windows applications and components. Cons Its ease of use, and that it uses XML to define the package rules. This makes it so that you can modify the install package outside of the user interface tool if needed to be done programmatically. We package executables we design and generate into MSI packages and almost nothing else. Hence the product has evolved into a much more sophisticated and complex product that has gone way beyond our needs. Pros Once you have a working script, executing modest updates is simple and trivial. The ability to customise the installer application is a significant bonus. Finally, having the script text file to search and edit manually helps find deeply embedded naming and other errors. Cons It is too complex - we use about 20% of the product so I feel like we are paying too much for what we will never use. Yet we are constrained to purchasing Enterprise for one simple Enterprise option, otherwise Professional would suffice. We are probably under-utilising various aspects. We are now dabbling with the Visual Studio integration but are finding it difficult to make it work the way we want , especially mirroring full installs vs updates. Reason for choosing Advanced Installer To be honest, we have not actively compared with other installers since our initial purchase because we have so much effort invested in installer scripts.
