## FAQs about PCLaw

Overview

### Which roles and teams benefit most from PCLaw?

PCLaw is most used by attorneys, lawyers, and partners who need matter management, time tracking, billing, and trust accounting in one system. Paralegals, law clerks, and legal assistants support case documentation and workflow organization, while office managers, administrators, and billing staff handle invoicing, payments, reporting, and day-to-day firm operations.

Answer based on 80 reviews

Overview

### What company size and industries is PCLaw built for?

PCLaw serves law firms and attorneys, primarily small businesses, which make up 97% of reviewers, with Law Practice at 70% and Legal Services at 24%. It has limited use among midsize and enterprise companies at 1% each, and is most commonly used for legal billing.

Answer based on 80 reviews

Features and Usability

### What are the key features of PCLaw?

PCLaw includes core legal accounting features like billing and invoicing, trust accounting, bank reconciliation, and time tracking, plus law firm management tools for matter and client management. Reviewers also highlight financial reporting and integrations, especially with Amicus, as key differentiators for handling invoices, payments, and firm records.

Answer based on 32 reviews

Overview

### Is PCLaw good for managing a law firm?

PCLaw supports core law firm management with legal accounting, matter workflows, trust compliance, deadlines, and billing in one place. Small firms and established practices often value its legal-specific setup and integrations, but some teams find it overly dated, less flexible than cloud systems, and harder to maintain when support or product stability declines.

Answer based on 20 reviews

Integrations

### Which third-party tools and platforms does PCLaw integrate with?

PCLaw integrates with Amicus Attorney for case management and billing, and connects natively to Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Word. These integrations center on legal practice workflows and document, email, and spreadsheet tasks commonly handled alongside accounting and time tracking.

Answer based on 13 reviews

Getting Started and Support

### How easy is it to onboard and train a team on PCLaw?

PCLaw offers in-person training, live online sessions, webinars, videos, and documentation. Staff such as clerks and daily users often learn basic navigation fairly quickly, especially after initial guidance. Admins, accounting-focused users, and teams moving from simpler tools may need more time because the interface feels dated and some features have a learning curve.

Answer based on 16 reviews

Getting Started and Support

### What customer support options does PCLaw offer, and how do users rate the experience?

PCLaw offers email/help desk, FAQ/forum, a knowledge base, and phone support. User experience with support is mixed but trends negative: some describe staff as helpful and prompt, while many report long phone waits, slow or missing email responses, difficulty reaching agents, unresolved technical issues, and declining service quality over time.

Answer based on 26 reviews

Features and Usability

### How well does PCLaw handle legal billing and accounting?

PCLaw combines legal billing and accounting in one system, making trust accounting, timekeeping, and invoicing easier for many law firms. Small practices and firms with specialized billing needs often like its detailed reports, reconciliation tools, and split billing, though some users find it dated, costly, and unreliable during updates or support issues.

Answer based on 32 reviews

Features and Usability

### Is PCLaw easy to use for a law firm?

PCLaw feels manageable for daily legal work once staff learn the system, especially for billing, time entry, and matter tasks. Clerks, administrators, and long-time legal users often find navigation familiar, but new users may face a steeper learning curve, confusing menus, freezes, and help resources that make simple tasks harder.

I have used it for over 20+ years and when it was working it worked well. But as I said it has now been replaced with cloud based software.

Pros

I respect that it was an innovator in its time

Cons

It is now obsolete and no longer offers IT Support

My overall experience with PCLaw has been positive. I appreciated how the system brings together client matter management, trust accounting, billing, and financial reporting in one centralized platform.

Pros

It integrates time tracking, billing, and trust accounting into a single, easy-to-use platform. It’s designed specifically for law firms, so everything from matter management to client trust compliance, is tailored to legal workflows.

Cons

The user interface feels a bit outdated and can be unintuitive, especially for new users.

Prior to the sale, it was an outstanding software.

Pros

PC Law used to be the gold standard for law practice matter management and accounting.

Cons

Unfortunately, PCLaw was sold, and the new owners have discontinued support and increased fees. We experienced many data inconsistencies, which could trigger Law Society problems.

Currently, we are now only using PCLaw for our historical data since migrating to a new case management system. PCLaw had a tendency to lock up causing downtime and having to manually track time and activity.

Pros

Tech support is knowledgeable and helpful. The accounting reports were detailed and useful. Separate registers and receipts for operating account and trust accounts made it easier when depositing payments or writing checks.

Cons

Biggest con of PCLaw was having to access information thru multiple screens instead of having it on one accessible screen. The parameters for creating prebills are too broad, took hours to go through and had a tendency to close out in the middle of prebilling. Experienced multiple issues several times throughout the month leading to downtime. Data would go missing, and files would have to be re-created.

Great software used by many law firms due to its user friendly software and amazing technical support.

Pros

Easy to use program that rarely had technical issues. Very dependable and user friendly. Docketing and Expenses were easy to view and edit and having the option to edit other users dockets helped when you are in charge of organizing multiple calendars

Cons

Wish there was spell check for dockets. When searching for client files sometimes it doesn't recognize their file number and you have to manually search for it.

It was an ok program and got the job done but there are easier programs out there to utilize.

Pros

It was easy to enter information into PCLaw and we used it for almost 20 years.

Cons

There were lots of bugs within PCLaw. We used it for a long time and we just accepted that these were going to be issues and would work around them. The main issue within PCLaw was with generating Ledes invoices. PCLaw did not give you the ability to generate them correctly, so I would have to go in and manually tweak all of the invoice files that it generated or sometimes completely redo them on my on outside of the software.

Reasons for choosing PCLaw

We eventually swapped away from PCLaw for another product and found it to be much easier to use. However, we used PCLaw for over 20 years and it works perfectly fine.
