We started with a single waiting room screen and it has gradually become a much more customised setup as we've discovered what the platform can do. We originally ran Yodeck on a Windows mini PC and had a few little niggles, mainly around keeping background music streams running reliably alongside the signage. Nothing major, but it occasionally needed some attention. Since moving over to a Raspberry Pi running Yodeck OS, those issues have pretty much disappeared and the whole setup just seems to work. Any other bugs or issues we've come across have generally been minor. The preview can occasionally behave differently to the live screen, particularly with web content or audio, which can make troubleshooting a little confusing, but it hasn't affected the reliability of the actual signage. The documentation and communication from Yodeck are good, and there's plenty of information available when you want to try something more advanced. Support is there when needed, although we've generally been able to find the answers ourselves without having to contact them very often. What I particularly like is that Yodeck can be as simple or as advanced as you want it to be. We've gone from fairly basic digital signage to custom layouts, web content, integrations and our own web app. We've been happy enough with it that we're now considering expanding beyond our current single screen. Pros What I like most about Yodeck is the flexibility. We use it for a waiting room screen in a busy GP practice and it lets us bring together practice news, staff information, health campaigns, RSS feeds, background audio and our own custom web content all in one place. The layout designer is one of my favourite features as it gives me the freedom to build the screen exactly how I want it rather than being tied to a template. We've even integrated our own web app built with Claude, which shows how flexible the platform can be. Everything can be managed remotely and our Raspberry Pi player has been extremely reliable. We're currently using the free plan as we have one screen, and we've been impressed enough that we're now considering adding more screens. Cons There really isn't much I dislike about Yodeck. The main area I'd improve is the preview function. I've occasionally had web content or audio streams not work properly in the preview, only for them to work perfectly when pushed to the actual Raspberry Pi player. It can make troubleshooting a little confusing because you don't always know whether there's an issue with your content or just the preview. Some of the more advanced features also take a little experimenting to get right, but that's probably to be expected given how much flexibility Yodeck offers. Reason for choosing Yodeck I considered Anthias because it's free and can run on a Raspberry Pi, but Yodeck ultimately offered more of what I wanted for our GP waiting room without me having to build and maintain as much of the system myself. The biggest difference for me was the overall management experience. Yodeck gives me the layout designer, playlists, scheduling, remote player management, web content and monitoring all in one place. I can experiment with quite advanced layouts and our own custom web apps while still having an interface that's straightforward to manage day to day. The free single-screen plan also made the decision easier. As we currently only have one waiting room screen, there wasn't really a financial advantage to going down the self-hosted route with Anthias. I liked the idea of Anthias and the control that comes with an open-source solution, but for our use Yodeck gives us that flexibility with considerably less maintenance.
