If you look at Linux distribution market shares over the years, you'll see the Red Hat family losing market share to the Debian family - chiefly Ubuntu. When you consider Red Hat's embarrassing missteps with killing CentOS Linux and turning AWX (the open source Ansible Tower upstream) into a Kubernetes-only project, it's not surprising that Ubuntu has risen. Ubuntu is where the industry is heading. Pros Ubuntu now uses the GNOME desktop environment, which is modern and highly effective if you're a keyboard guru like me. Its "Snap" format of distribution-agnostic packages makes it easy to get more up-to-date versions of common software. There's a lot of community support for Ubuntu. Cons Ubuntu's "Snap" packages automatically update, and you can't turn this off. That's fine for desktop software but a disaster for server software. Canonical, which commercially sponsors Ubuntu, still doesn't have professional training similar to the RHCSA/RHCE. April 9, 2022 5.0 As the main daily driver of my home PC, I'm very satisfied with the level of support and quality of this operating system. I understand and appreciate the vast number of distros on the market and choosing Ubuntu over the others means it is something special. Pros Ubuntu is one of the most user friendly distros out there. It offers you both security and great user interface in one whole package. The frequency of the updates make sure that your operating system is reliable and robust. Ubuntu uses GNOME desktop environment by default and I must say its one of the most polished desktop environments on the market. It's very customizable and very responsive. The goal of Ubuntu team has been to create an operating system that is easy to use on desktop computers and I believe they have nailed this. The availability of software packages for this operating system has made it very convenient. Most of software providers create Debian packages which are compatible with Ubuntu. Cons To be able to put your finger on shortcomings of a software you don't really have to think that hard. When it comes to Ubuntu I must say it is difficult because the team behind Ubuntu have tried their best and they have succeeded in the one goal and that is to make an operating system which is very user friendly. It can manage multiuser demands and be used as a desktop or server operating system. Cons Nothing to dislike; after a while, you become used to it and don't want to change. We have been running 3 Ubuntu servers on our ESXi and they have never caused an issue. Super low memory and CPU requirement but do work rubustly. Pros It is lightweight but very powerful operating system with a lot of out of the box features and packages.I have always found everything I needed in Ubuntu with very little need to install packages. Cons Sometimes I feel it lacks the user interface of the consumer based Windows operating systems, may it be the server or the desktop versions. But after I compare the resource usage, it always makes Ubuntu work it for mission critical work. I like the simple user interface, addition of simple features found in other OS's, and the ability to develop software in a Linux environment. Cons While this is no direct fault of Ubuntu, I wish there were more supported software for the platform. Software commonly found on other OS's are not supported on Ubuntu.
