I have been using Overleaf for 1.5 years now. I have used Overleaf for report writing. I am also writing my master's thesis using Overleaf. Pros The ability to perfectly follow a template of a scientific conference and journals (IEEE, Elsevier, etc.) The ability to save work in an online space that can be accessed from anywhere in the world No hassle in editing and formatting documents (as is the case with PDF files) File sharing with a group of people who can proofread and edit the document Cons Generating tables is somewhat complex in LaTex and Overleaf. Sometimes too many suggestions can be a bit too much for experienced users however very helpful for beginners Continuous internet connectivity Review Source AB Alexandros B. Student Computer Software Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "A very easy to use latex editor that anyone can and should use" July 29, 2021 5.0 Overall, a very easy-to-use online latex editor with live compile/rendering that makes your life easy. Pros Before Overleaf I had a great fear for latex as being too difficult and time-consuming to write and make it look nice. However, after taking the recommendation from a colleague, I started using Overleaf and I generated beautiful Latex reports very easily and fast. There is extensive documentation for everything you might want to do, everything is online so you can access it from any device, there are plenty of templates to help you jump-start your documents and collaboration tools for teams. Cons The only thing I can grumble about is not being able to upload files directly by dragging them on the left panel but instead it needs an extra separate button for this. Also, once you understand the interface of the website, I becomes easy to build a resume from start. Pros It has a huge set of professional templates that can be customized to our requirements. I also have many features to customize the document to our liking. The best part about Overleaf is that it is free to use. Cons Customizing the resume on Overleaf requires one to deal with the Tex file code which can be extremely difficult and time-consuming for creating a basic resume. I definitely recommend it to generate high quality documents/reports. Pros Overleaf is a great too for document generation. I really like its streamlined User-Interface and file management capabilities. Also, its text editor offers an autofill feature which is extremely helpful for most commands. Overleaf does really make LaTeX accessible to the average user! Cons There's nothing I really dislike about Overleaf in general. There are some minor improvements that could be done, like giving more details about the compilation errors or the issues when generation very large documents. Review Source FO Felix O. Pros It is free of cost and has a very user-friendly interterface. The best part of overleaf is its online version where one easily share his/her work with other colleagues. In case of syntax help, short code scripts can be easily found from the website. Cons Need to work on debugging feature for error handling. Sometimes face problems while generating pdf with lots of figures. For smooth running, one needs to avoid spacing in the names of the figures. For example, figures with name 'Fig 1.eps' will now show up in the pdf unless its name is changed to 'Fig1.epd'. Review Source MH Muhammad H. Would take me triple the time to do accomplish anything if I had to use TexStudio on my not-so-advanced laptop computer. Just create an account and you are good to go. Tutorials are plentiful and easy to follow. Cons If the document is full of equations and graphs, rendering will take a minute. Lecturer Higher Education Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Overleaf makes using LaTeX a breeze" February 18, 2022 5.0 Overleaf really improves the experience of using LaTeX and introducing new users to it. It completely negates the need to perform a local, and often tricky-to-get-right, installation (such as MikTeX). Pros LaTeX documents have historically been difficult to collaborate on as LaTeX users have not had the infrastructure to support this. Overleaf, like Sharepoint for Microsoft Word documents, makes it very easy to collaborate with multiple authors on a LaTeX document. Basic reviewing capabilities are built into Overleaf including the ability to comment on the LaTeX source as well as the tracking of revisions. Unlike local LaTeX installations which often crash the compiler when errors exist in the LaTeX source, Overleaf is robust and tends to still produce a PDF output whilst warning about the errors. Lastly, the availability of numerous templates for various journals, and academic theses and dissertations, makes it really easy to get started. Cons Overleaf has a free tier which does not include version tracking. It would be nice if it did. Review Source CP Chiara P.
