I really enjoy Mastercam, as does my engineering team. Mastercam is our preferred 3D programming software for our 18 vertical 4 axis mills.

Pros

Mastercam is my preferred software for 3D modeling and programming for milling metal precision machined components. It's interface and ease of use make it easy to create tool paths with accuracy and post to our 4 axis Makino Mills. I have use other software packages, such as Gibbs Cam and 3D AutoCAD, but they do not offer the same ease of use interface as Mastercam in my opinion. Also, many of the large Aerospace, Military & Defense contractors, such as Lockheed Martin and Parker Hanifin are going to 3D models, so as a tier 1 supplier to these large corporations, Mastercam helps us easily extract the GD&T and PMI from these models to create manufacturing process print.

Cons

I would say the only advantage Gibbs Cam had over Mastercam is the solid 3D model (similar to the old "Inventor" software I used early in my career as a mechanical engineer). Mastercam is 3D, but the models are "transparen," showing the lines/shapes, but not colored in.

Switched from

[SolidWorks Premium](https://www.capterra.com/p/93121/SolidWorks-Premium/)

We did not switch per say; however, we added Mastercam in addition to SolidWorks.

I honestly can't complain about the overall experience using Mastercam as a caf/cam package, a little pricey but not excessive.

Pros

What I like the most about Mastercam is the short learning curve, and the ability to have a student go from designing and drawing to machining their first parts.

Cons

There is not a whole lot to complain about using Mastercam, but the interface between drawing and machining could be slightly more intuitive.

Pros

Estudié y utilicé este software en la universidad haciendo prácticas. Me pareció muy básico y para aplicaciones sencillas.

Cons

Si la pieza a mecanizar se complica y el número de ejes de la máquina es elevado(12, 14...) se queda pequeño

Pros

Mastercam is a very powerful software and once you learn how to use it, it's very easy to crank out part designs/tool paths very quickly.

Cons

Sometimes the tool path simulation is a little buggy, but it resolves if you close it and rerun the simulation. The price is pretty steep for a smaller shop but it makes up for it with features and support.

I studied mechanical technician and we used the mill to design parts

Pros

It's a lot of fun to design the drawing and the production process, it can also run on very low hardware.

Cons

It's a bit old program interface, I think it's easy, but I think the material types it contains are missing.

Pros

You can design a lot o things as metal and plastic components , the software is easy to use but if you are not good with that you can import an design from another drawing software and continue working with MasterCAM

Cons

Sometimes there are lag problems at the moment to simulate your project
