Heavy bots presence with zero support. " April 7, 2026 2.0 The trial/free plan is a major lure to move you to paid. This is without providing support or real-time usage. The trial/free plan claims each month, you are provided with usage credits/minutes. But my experience 1st used there was NO monthly minutes provided, only big+bold adv to upgrade to a paid plan. Misleading bots with zero support. Pros The easy file upload process. That's it. The only good thing is that file uploading is fairly easy to do. Cons Almost everything else is a pain. The app/site is not particularly user-friendly. The bots are constantly popping up to urge a pay plan, which would happen if full-service were available. At the very least, a 90-day assessment. Descript DOES NOT offer a full trial/free plan and is therefore NOT a good video editing tool. We used Descript to record and edit several videos. The edits were done around May, mainly using the web app. When we opened those same projects in December, many of them looked like raw recordings again. Cuts were missing and effects were missing. Support and engineering told us they checked their logs and only saw “creation → recording → transcription,” and they said they could not find proof the edits were ever made. That explanation does not match what we saw in the app. The affected videos show two project backup files. In Descript, backups only appear after you start editing (the app even says so). But when we checked other projects that we know are raw, those do not show any backup files. We asked a simple question: if backups appear only after editing, why do the “raw” affected videos have two backups while truly raw videos have none? They did not answer this clearly. One rep also said they noticed a spike in network errors in May. That is exactly when the edits were done, which makes it very likely the edits did not save or sync correctly. Instead of admitting this could be the cause, support kept pointing to “no logs of edits” and that it was our fault. They refunded one month, but called it a “courtesy.” That was disappointing. We also stopped using Descript while they were investigating because we did not feel it was safe to keep working in the platform. If that one-month refund was meant to cover the time we could not use the service during the investigation, that still does not address the real damage. We lost many hours of work, we paid our editor hourly, and we paid for the subscription for convenience and reliability. For the amount of inconvenience and loss we experienced, one month is clearly not enough. Pros Descript is easy to use for recording and basic editing, and the workflow is convenient when everything works. The web app makes it simple to access projects without installing heavy software, and the built-in tools for transcription and quick edits can save time. Cons Reliability and support follow-through. Projects edited months earlier appeared as raw recordings later, with missing cuts and effects. Support could not recover the edits and did not clearly explain why affected projects had backup files while truly raw projects did not. The response felt dismissive. Review Source PO Peter O. Professor Higher Education Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Descript has deteriorated to the point of being unusable" September 27, 2025 1.0 Unfortunately, the developers have slowly destroyed what was a fantastic tool. This has been very sad to watch. I truly enjoyed using Descript before and raved about it to everyone. The fact that the developers push new updates and features at a seemingly daily basis seems to be at the heart of things. Rather than a thoughtful process of preserving what people loved about the software and methodically stepping out enhancements, the tool has slowly devolved into an unreliable, unpleasant, and unusable tool. Pros Descript USED to be my favourite tool for screen recordings and voice overs. The previous version (about a year ago) was reliable, easy to use, and had all the features to expedite workflow in going from a raw screen recording to a polished video. Cons The current software is unusable. The most significant issues are in corrupted and failed recordings. Short segments (roughly a word or two in length) are randomly dropped at multiple points in a recording, and in other cases the recording stops (without warning) midway through. More generally, where once the editor was slick and responsive, it has become glitchy and laggy. It does not accurately show the video in the timeline (so it is not synced with the audio, making edits almost impossible). My last few recordings I tried multiple times, but each one had major errors and I finally gave up, cancelled my subscription, and moved onto other software tools. Files losing audio randomly, projects taking forever to load and freezing every other second, the software crashing in the middle of a recording session. Far too many bugs to count. My workflow is essentially nonexistent because i'm constantly troubleshooting. Generally the support people are helpful, but i can only spend so much time talking in circles with their AI assistant before moving to a person to help me fix the problems caused by the software. Pros I like the idea of this program. On paper it seems very helpful. The text based editing helps me map out my episodes and some of the tools help me repurpose clips and stuff. Cons There are far too many bugs for it to be useful. I'm not exaggerating when i say that i have to deal with multiple BIG problems every day. I do think simpler terms for their workflow would be helpful and an ai/veo option would be very helpful. Pros The Ui/Ux is very clean and intuitive. A lot of products on the market are very cluttered and confusing but descript isn't. I also like the built in dark mode because if you are editing a lot its easier on the eyes. Cons The way to batch export is redundant. It should be simpler and easier to clip up a long form piece of work and simply export all clips, all audios etc in one simple clip. We're able to preview episode scripts with clients which makes the approval process a better experience for them. Our scriptwriters are able to work directly with the audio and transcript at the same time and when they're done, we can export the raw project for cleanup and sound design in an external DAW which is awesome forethought from Descript. With other projects, editing and sound design and exporting can be done entirely in Descript and I'm really happy with the results. Despite its limitations and bugs, I still struggle not to recommend Descript to anyone making a podcast. Whatever you're doing, there is a good chance you will find a place for it in your process, just maybe not as much or as reliably as you would like. Pros Descript is a strong collection of audio tools that just weren't available when I started making podcasts. The ability to organise, collaborate and publish an audio project in the cloud with a friendly interface is great and used to be a huge pain to figure out. Editing audio with the transcript and the waveform at the same time allows you to skip a bunch of technicalities and focus on your creativity. Video capabilities expand the possibilities, and the overall suite of tools make me rethink entirely what podcast editing can or should be in a good way. Cons Stability is the biggest problem I have with this. After working on about a lot of different projects with different collaborators, I'm still coming up against things that make it freeze, make it crash, or break a project (usually salvageable at least), and end up needing to work around issues to keep things rolling. Also, while Descript has a lot of features, in comparison to any long-standing audio software it leaves so much to be desired. There are many missing tools that would add a lot of room for creativity and technical cleanup. Things like audio meters, noise gate, spectrum analysis, filters to automate creatively, ducking, but also the more unexpected effects like reverb, stereo delay, pitch shifting, layered FX, these are all things podcasters of any kind might want to use for effect at some point and many folks I know can't, or don't want to tell their stories without them. This is especially true for video which misses on some basic transformations like rotation for text and images. Alternatives considered [Soundtrap](https://www.capterra.com/p/209734/Soundtrap/) Reason for choosing Descript Soundtrap as an editing-with-transcript tool was way too limited when I looked into it. Pros My favorite aspect of this software is the ability to delete filler words, shorten pauses between phrases and make my guests sound so much better than they do in the rough interview track. I love being able to edit the audio file by deleting things from the transcribed text and being able to go back and forth between editing in the text and editing in the audio file. The last episode I edited on descript cut 20 minutes off the interview. Then I bring that edited track into garage band to add intro/outro music, etc. ( i know I’m supposed to be able to do all this inside descript but I haven’t taken the time to learn how to do that. Cons Poor transcription of non native speakers. Not knowing how to add in existing transcript and match it with the raw interview track before editing. This is the first software that I find to have a natural sounding AI with affordable price tag. I also could make the AI learn my voice and my inflections, and become one of the AI speaker, so I don't have to record my voice ever again Pros Text-to-speech feature. The feature could learn my voice and turn it into an AI voice. Now, I don't have to record my own voice for the audio of my next video project Cons In the span that I have been using the software, there has been major updates and changes made. More and more features have been added like the video editing for example, and some changes to the UI. I am mainly using it for audio purposes only, so the new features are not relevant to me. We're really benefitting from its capacity and feature-load. Pros I don't know where to begin with this software and how it has formatively changed the game for my organization's podcast. It has truly cut our work time in half and opened up that free time to accomplish other tasks. From the auto-transcription to the voice recognition, Descript seamlessly integrates audio into text form which helps us build our scripts for each podcast episode. It's fascinating how powerful it is - and what's more, Descript is constantly updating the software, so new features are always popping up. Cons The cost is definitely hard for our limited nonprofit budget, but otherwise, I don't have any dislikes-- even the mistakes the auto-transcription makes are passable because we're still saving so much time. In fact, I've been using all sorts of different software over the past few years and I just didn't find anything that was really easy to use -- until Descript. As somebody who is a heavy content creator, I needed to start creating video content and it was really hard because I had to rely on others to edit the videos for me. Now with Descript I can do it myself which is super powerful and saves a lot of time. My favorite features are "shorten word gaps" and "remove filler words". Everybody thinks I'm a magician when I show the my videos post-production. Descript has changed the entire scope of my work and how I do my job. It's much easier than any other software tool that I've used. I love how easy it is to use, the interface is very intuitive, it's very quick and simple. My friends and teams love Descript too. Don't be scared! All you need to do is upload your original video or record a video directly in the software and then edit it out later or add text or change the voice if you want. It's really great. It works beautifully for both things. Cons I get so frustrated with the CONSTANT moving around of features and the sunsetting of classic might even make us switch projects. The editing aspect especially, we use it because it makes sense for folks who are more word (rather than visually) focused and for less tech savvy employees who just need to take out a word here or there or trim a video. Pros What I like the most about using Descript, is that it allows me to use 1 tool for many of my needs. Previously I would have to use 3-4 different sites/tools to get the job done. I look forward to creating video clips and editing audio (it makes a tedious experience more fun!). But more than anything it has allowed us to systematize our process in a way that wasn't possible before. We can do things now that would have required extensive domain knowledge before. Pros What I love most about Descript is that it makes the process of creating audio and video clips (as well as editing for podcast episodes) super simple. I also love how often the team updates the software and releases new features. I feel like my trust in Descript is well-placed. Cons I wish there was more flexibility in the export options. For example, we can do 90% of our audiogram/videogram workflow in Descript, but we still have to move into something like Adobe Premiere for that last 10%. If there were just a few more customization options, we could do 100% in Descript. That said, many of the features I love didn't exist in the beginning, so I'm confident it will eventually get there, and am not worried in the slightest about building our processes and systems around Descript.
