### "The best one I tried"

February 10, 2023

5.0

Overall, my experience was positive - it works fine for my needs which is creating layouts for reports and infographics.

Pros

I like that it has a lot of customization features (still would love to have much more options!). Once you set up a template of a graph, exchanging data is extremely easy.

Cons

My problem is really specific - round graphs and text labels just don't work - if you want to make everything readible and lookind nice you have to add your labels seperately which is extremely annoying.

### "Great software, but interface is tricky to understand/use."

July 27, 2023

4.0

Being able to create a chart within Illustrator, then "expand" it and fine-tune customizations is fantastic. Otherwise, I've been exporting charts to .svg and bringing them into Illustrator, which is not as clever.

Pros

If there is a graph you need to create, Datylon can do it. The types of graphs and customizations for these graphs are nearly limitless.

Cons

I really struggled to figure out a couple of basic features: it would be great if there were a way to create a histogram from a single column of data. I could not figure out how to do this. You need to create a "count" spreadsheet separately with a linear scale (1,2,3,4,5) according to the bins you want, then hide the x-axis of the resulting graph.I recognize this requires Datylon to perform math/calculations, but it sure would be helpful.Second, I have not figured out how to set the "zero" point for a diverging bar chart - the category/value that separates left and right sides of the chart. I'm wondering if it would be helpful to have, by graph type, a tab with feature settings particular to that graph type. It would clarify which options are available.

### "So much better than built-in Illustrator charting tools"

March 20, 2023

3.0

Seems little daunting at first, but eventually started figuring something things out. I worry about my less technical designers getting into this thing. Its need much better tutorials, contextual help, and error handling. Also would like to see a way to do Sankey diagrams built in, and more letter-level control of type (like if I want to bold part of a label, or color a single word or something).

Pros

I was on a design project that required a lot ofcharts, graphs, and other data visualization. Illustrator's built in tools are very lacking. Loved how many different chart types Datylon had out of the box. Gives designers a lot of options.

Cons

It's missing an undo feature. I messed something up, and it gives me an error in the plug-in screens but I have no idea where to fix it. Still displays the way i want so I just live with it. Also its a little hard to navigate and understand where the various settings I need are. Really needs contextual tool tips to help explain what everything does (with visual examples).

Reason for choosing Datylon

Seeing the examples of what you could do. Going to the site and seeing all the template options. I knew it'd have something I could work with.

### "A great option for creating charts in Illustrator"

January 14, 2026

5.0

It's good! Datylon makes it easy to create great-looking charts in Illustrator. I would appreciate special pricing for nonprofits.

Pros

Once you get the hang of it, Datylon is quite easy to use. A lot of styling options are available, and it's easy to edit older files with charts made using Datylon.

Cons

I would have liked a quick walkthrough and a demo when I started using Datylon. It took a bit of trial and error to figure out how to use the addon in Illustrator.

### "Taking my Illustrator Chart Creation to the Next Level"

December 1, 2023

5.0

Pros

I love that I can easily create charts and update the info much more simpler than in the Illustrator chart creation tool. This plug-in is very robust and can do things which not only save a lot of time, like resizing the charts while having the fonts stay the same size, but also enables me to have more control in the design process while creating clear and precise data visualization assets. The more I use it the easier it gets but I can see that it is capable of doing so much more than I utilize it for. I highly recommend Datylon to anyone that needs to create charts for Data Visualization.

Cons

There's a bit of a learning curve but I've been able to figure out most things thru trial and error and when I can't figure something out the help desk is very helpful in solving the problems.

### "Must have for data visualisation "

August 16, 2021

5.0

Datylon saved my day with big report documents, obtaining excellent results; yet, the learning curve is steep and you have to be creative sometimes to get always what you want from your graphs.

Pros

Note: I’m a Datylon user in Adobe Illustrator environment. Datylon is great for big report projects: once you have set up your graph, you can apply it to several sets of data without any annoying “reset” issues from the Illustrator Graph tool.

Cons

The software lacks in consistency of features among the several graph types, especially the “Data label” feature, available only for Line graphs. I’ve been able to work this out by applying a Line graph w/data labels over Candle graphs, but it meant losing a lot of time in setting up both spreadsheets and Datylon graphs; some easy tweaks are not available (i.e.: in Data Labels, it will automatically delete leading zeros, even if the source data is set as text, and you can’t switch it off); in order to solve these issues, you need a good knowledge in both spreadsheet and Illustrator softwares.

### "Datylon streamlined my workflow of hundreds of charts; final output was InDesign."

July 30, 2023

5.0

I scheduled a meeting with \[sensitive content hidden\] when I first downloaded the app. I can recommend this to anyone since it greatly shortens the learning curve. After tinkering with the extension for a few hours, I had my workflow figured out and am happy to have saved time using it.

Pros

Copying charts with the same design elements makes a purchase of Datylon outweigh the costs.

Cons

It would be nice to find a way to make each chart 's x and y grid lines appear uniform automatically in instances when charts with drastically different x and y values are copied to duplicate visual elements. This is ENTIRELY POSSIBLE MANUALLY.

### "Speed Up my workflow"

January 30, 2023

4.0

My experience with datylon is very good because I have speed up my processes and my execution of similar graphs. I found it very useful in the case of report design with dozens of charts, mostly similar between them.

Pros

I like the easy merge of data sources and the customization of the chart chosen

Cons

I don't like the possibility to switch from one chart type to another without losing the visual style that I have defined.

### "Great tool!"

January 30, 2023

5.0

I really like using this!

Pros

I like the level of customization you can get with this software. Having made visualizations in other software, I think Datylon does a good job of streamlining the process. And I like how much documentation there is online as well. I wish there was a Desktop app that you could use outside of Illustrator or the web browser.

Cons

I've mostly had issues importing data with excel or csv tables. There are a few other design limitations but generally speaking, I feel like there is a lot you can do!Something else is that if you want to create something outside of the 10 or so main chart types, you need to contact customer support.

Have already started to build it into many of the key deliverables I commit to, especially regarding update-able dashboard based on market information

Pros

Cons

Excellent

Pros

Chart options, and the ability to bridge the gap between Excel and Illustrator was a great time-saver

Cons

Pricing is too expensive for individuals; I guess working in a big organization has benefits. But I won't pay a monthly subscription for a utility but rather a standalone product.

### "Used for creating visualizations Adobe would otherwise struggle to produce."

June 29, 2023

5.0

Still a beginner, but so far I very much appreciate having the tool in my arsenal to automate from data the visualizations I’d have to otherwise conjure manually.

Pros

The ease of switching styles on the fly, and the ability to recreate multiples of a visualization with a few simple clicks.

Cons

Honestly, I’d prefer better integration with the rest of my Adobe workflow.

### "Smart, powerful, but flawed product. Strong on data, clumsy on visualization."

August 16, 2021

4.0

Datylon is clearly a very powerful product, but some of that power is let down by a slow and clumsy interface. You can get it to do what you want, but it'll take time and patience, especially if you care about pixel perfect layouts and typographic details. Our primary use for it has been for marketing-oriented trend reports and analysis, so many of our visualizations are on the 'light' end, focused more on the visuals than hardcore data. Datylon has been very useful particularly in creating layouts and then adapting them for new sets of data, e.g. for updated surveys or different regions, but at times it feels like (1) it may be overkill for our somewhat simple purposes, (2) because of its slowness and clunkiness mentioned above, it may have been quicker and easier to create the charts using Illustrator's limited built-in tools. I think it's better suited to much larger scale and deeper visualizations that may be created once and then updated infrequently. But it's a decent product with a lot of potential, and I look forward to seeing how it improves with time.

Pros

The ability to revise and edit the data, and have it automatically update in the chart. Shared data sets for different charts, easy to duplicate charts using different subsets of the data for comparison. I love the ability to set custom colours through the sheet.

Cons

It's \*very\* slow. Edit something, anything, and it takes at least a second to reflect that change on the artboard. In addition, many of the settings for text font/colour/placement/alignment etc. are very fiddly and unintuitive. So there is a lot of trial and error till you get things looking the way you want them to. And then, there's no way to save styles or presets - so if I'm making a new chart I have to go through and change the font, sizes, colors, label positions, etc. etc. all over again. Duplicating charts - it's not immediately clear that it's also copying the data into a new sheet, so you inadvertently land up with multiple sheets with the same data in them, rather than one shared source sheet. I know I can go in and manually switch out the sheet, but why not give me the option to keep the same one when duplicating the chart? For heat maps etc. that use symbols like stars - let us use custom shapes! I know you don't want to build a full scale spreadsheet in an Illustrator plugin, but some of the sheets' functionality still feels too limited - basic things like dragging cells to duplicate/increment, for example.

### "A powerful tool with a learning curve"

August 23, 2021

4.0

Overall, Datylon has been a great tool for us to make static data visualizations for print products and the occasional web product as well. Once you understand how to import and format data and learn about all the customizable data options, it's not overly difficult to use and has a great variety of charts to choose from.

Pros

The best thing about Datylon is the incredible level of customization that is possible for every chart. It's great that you can manually adjust the size of a chart and the entire chart will automatically resize, it's easy to change colors, font sizing, data point positioning, labels, etc. Occasionally you get to a point where you need to expand the chart and manually adjust something, but if you put the time in, you can usually find an option to adjust almost anything in your chart.

Cons

There are a few things that could be improved. The first is the constant updates of Datylon that are not incredibly well communicated to users. My colleague and I often find that Datylon will stop working (usually the editor will not appear or function) and we realize that there has been an update that we need to install and then restart our computers to activate. Fewer updates and better communication would be appreciated. I would also love to see a choropleth option! I work for a company that deals with a lot of demographic data and we are often needing to make choropleths of the world or states/counties/regions within countries. Even just starting with a world option would be great. There is also a big learning curve for this software. For me, the first time I used Datylon it took me several hours to try and understand how to format the data. Importing was easy, but the data was not arranged correctly and I didn't understand how the binding worked or that I would need to adjust the highest numbers that the axes would reach. I think there is probably a way to improve this. More video tutorials would also be helpful.

Response from Datylon

August 25, 2021

Dear Anneke, Thanks for the nice review and constructive comments! Regarding the frequent updates, we are always (overly?) eager to release new features and some users are waiting on specific fixes, hence the frequent updates. But we'll keep it in mind. Regarding the communication, we send out service emails to all our users about the updates. So we need to investigate how to improve there. Feel free to contact us about that on getsupport@datylon.com. Ease of use and maps are definitely on our mid term roadmap. The Datylon Team.

### "The best way to create custom, editable charts in Illustrator"

November 30, 2023

5.0

Pros

Datylon is hands down the best chart great and data visualization tool on the market that works seamlessly with Adobe Illustrator. You can easily resize a chart, and the text does not distort or change size. You can duplicate a chart. You can connect multiple charts to one data sheet so you can easily update the data across all your charts. Almost everything is customizable. And the icing on top is that you can also upload your charts and files to the Datylon platform and create templates to reuse over and over.

Cons

Occasionally I do find I want to make a specific customization and that isn't available, but usually there is a work around or another way to solve. I do wish you could create a hyperlink text box on the online platform so that templates can have clickable links.

Reason for choosing Datylon

The built-in Illustrator chart/graph feature is terrible and hasn't been updated in years. And other products I researched didn't have any easy way to integrate with Illustrator or InDesign. Datylon does exactly that, and does it so well.

### "Datylon patches the gapping hole left by the Adobe Illustrator charts and graphs tool"

March 22, 2023

Very good, even though certain things could be upgraded/fixed so that it can do more and is more customizable. Such as default typeface, size, styles. It's the best thing I've found so far, and thank goodness I don't have to use the Illustrator built-in graphing tool anymore!

Pros

Cons

There are certainly kinks to work out, especially having to remove all commas (,) from numbers when inserting data.

### "Datylon is the answer to Illustrator's clunky built-in charting tool"

July 27, 2023

5.0

I am so happy we found Datylon, as I was pulling out my hair with Illustrator's chart tool. While I feel like there is a steeper learning curve than I would like, I appreciate the range of capability, and feel that I have only scratched the surface with what can be done.

Pros

Datylon allows us to create branded charts and graphs within Illustrator, with far fewer headaches than if we solely used Illustrator's built in tools. We are able to control the look and feel of the charts while maintaining editability.

Cons

There is a bit of a learning curve with Datylon that we had to work through. It doesn't act like an Adobe product, and isn't quite as intuitive. The data fields also don't quite act like Excel, so it took few beats to remember that hitting tab won't move the curser to the next cell. Remembering which menu controlled the look of which element took some time as well. But once we picked up on the way everything works, it has been MUCH better than what we were doing before.
